Psychedelic Art Installations with Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman
Ойын-сауық
Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman create immersive environmental installations that play on ideas of drug culture, psychedelia, architecture, and film. Beginning with their first official collaborative piece, Hello Meth Lab in the Sun, the artists have created a web of reoccurring narratives that have sprawled into several connected works, most notably Black Acid Co-Op and Bright White Underground.

They are not. they are most likely commissioned, like you said. installation art is hard to sell because it's (most) often tied to the place it was made, and interacts with that specific place. art does not always have to be sold :) (thank god!)
It's art people. It's about immersing yourself in different worlds, different cultures and appreciating the creativity of the artists. Just because you cannot comprehend its meaning doesn't mean it's stupid or useless. This is cool as fuck.
beautiful. You've taken my favourite aspects from my childhoods gaming concepts and made them a real experience. You should add actors to live in your installations, it would perfect your piece
this is great. some of the rooms are hard to look at, i love what they have done!!!
How are the installations sold? Are they left in place? Are they commissioned first? I think they are fantastic.
Thanks for sharing, this is inspirational for my new projects
their Scenario in the Shade at the MAAT, Lisbon....left me speechless...the videos spellbinding.
AMAZING WORK ! ! !
Amazing stuff.
Great stuff!
wow, im not really into art but some of these were amazing!
More art content plz Vice!
Best tip ever: More how, less what!
Very creative and dark.
These guys were like "lets put a bunch of random shit together and show it to adult hipsters"
This is great
I wanna see someone on psychedelics go through these rooms :-)
Before you call it pointless, consider larger philosophical questions like what is the point of any creative process that exists outside of pure function. I'm not saying that you have to like the work but calling it lame, dumb, or pointless is an incredibly simplistic response to art...if you think its bad, at least attempt to articulate why. That said, I love what these guys are doing...especially the B&W photos of the staged psychedelic group therapy session. Good stuff Vice.
Their stuff looks like an homage to David Lynch and Terrence McKenna, so doesn't quite impress as anything original, but they did execute well materially...I liked the textures....
I LOVE vice!
Whats the theme song called?
Pretty interesting. It's cool to see this getting recognized as art. Great movies like Evil Dead and Fear and Loathing can relate to this. Atmosphere is all about "set and setting". The room at 6:29 is pretty trippy/psychotic. I would not want to trip there.
I said LIKE, as in an example. The scene were Hunter wakes up from under the american flag with a tail and looks around in the suite is to me the scene that relates most to this video and the installations in it.
does anyone get this?
Im in LA....where these rooms at!
Reminds me of some haunted house or something, but this one is related to history, cool.
That's bad ass!
How would one make money on an art installation of this scale?
That's great! There really was a stuffed elephant in that scene and that really got stuck in my head because I was thinking "Holy shit this stuffed elephant with chains around it is supposed to be some kind of Indian goddess". You are right awesome movie, I need to see it again.
why should it be.these are actually pretty nice shots that capture the inentions of the artists very well.
Hey fresh off the boat is dope.
What is this,movie or what?
So sick
Like the part in Fear and Loathing where he turned the room into acid land including a stuffed elephant
This stuff is so sick
yep
wait so architecture is not art? Because I am pretty sure that is "real life"... I love how all the people that comment on these vice art video are apparently master artists who know leaps and bounds about it.
This shit is WAY over my head...
bet you've been craving to use that line. but thanks? i'm sure it will catch on =]
Psychedelic?
I apologize, Mahmoud. At first, I thought you were being facetious and trolling me. But, you are correct, I agree! So much substance in relation to this video. The stacked TV's and watching old school horror movies,etc...That movie is awesome. The part after drinking the adrenochrome is hilarious.
I'm prone to call bullshit on most recent artists theses days but I don't know...something about the way these guys talk about their work // the work itself seems to ring true. Their instillations seem like walking through the sets of a film. I'm interested.
I love how youtube is like a rabbit hole in itself.
this looks so fucking fun
Maybe charge and entrance fee or something? or sell photographs/books of the installation.
Interesting
Vice has so good quality right now, but why the hell can't they choose some interesting topics and not all those weird stuff
Curly guy popped a couple beans before this interview.
be careful with subtitles... when the artist said psychedelic, the subtitles said psychotic...
this is so fucking cool
Also reminds me of some Matthew Barney type shit that only a handful of people are really into. Watching one of those Cremaster movies is not the most pleasant experience.
I don't quite understand what this is supposed to be
so how do they make their money
The dude with the fro has to be tripping, look at his pupils
I understand the purpose of this, it's just that I'm not a big fan of this sort of psuedo mysterious psychedelic style. it really glamorizes the potential or actual lives of the subjects so that people viewing it think that their lives are a lot more than what they actually are.
now i dont have to pick up my room.. its an instillation..
I enjoy these scenarios immensely, yet I must say, These theatric creations are stimulating and inspiring as well as disturbing, only to those who havent lived the counter culture out of due necessity for the survival of the highly evolved mind. I have nothing negative to say. Still these presentations and the trips endured by those who were able to "experience" this art differs greatly from the cats who have endured heavy acid trips in dark rural places with the full intent of promoting human evolution. this shit is funky, beautiful, and groovy, yet I have spent my life in the acid trenches being a light to lost souls who actually are tweaking, drinking, extremely poor etc. california has done well in sensationalizing the real scene, but I must say this is only a way to express theatrically, the lessons of primal psychedelic survivors to financially advantageous onlookers.....none of you will ever know what it is like to actually be there in a shitty rural poverty stricken home, being the cat that actually makes higher thought make sense to high primates searching for hope....
that's funny because I always look down on hired killers, no matter the number of limbs
Haha nice bro. :D Best possible description.
I just googled them, this seems legit.
2:37 a bug flies out of that guys fucking hair!! hahaha
check out Dj Atmos on sound cloud
that eery music was disturbing me for a minute
That's exactly what he said....
Hopefully the drop in quality has to do with the hbo show?
is this for people who want to know what a bad trip is like? seems like more of a haunted house than anything
The "Stoned Ape" theory is just that... a theory. It isn't set in stone although it is a cool idea.

django is gangsta! is that rob & big's old house?
I think that we need a new avant garde which will exceed the spectator sport mentality about imagery.

vice puts out so much weird shit i cant tell if its an april fools joke or not
Why are there so many dislikes?
The trick is the deeper you go into the darkness once you start to understand your going some were you can never get out . Is the time you die but you keep going into point of no return because if you stop you will die . The only way out is to not to fear death and change who you are . Sleepyone .
why not film the movie
why would this be an april fool's day joke
what is reality?
This is a Re Upload
I get it but I'm also confused.
I had something similar in mind, where you just follow the bloodtrail of a dying man around in rooms, experiencing his last moments without any direct narative. Someone has probably done that too, I know videogames have, but it would just be so fun to do it in real.
laaaaame
These guys look like CarrotTop split into two people. One being the hair and the other being the face.
Bill Nye the acid guy
Your morals. Not ours. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
why the negativity? no one needs that, don't go through life being so negative friend.
i know people who do real art, who vice can come and do a video on..
I was thinking Tim Heidecker with a wig. Seems like a role he would play, too. Very dry and a lot of potential comedy material.
Sorry if I came off a bit strong haha. I thought the two seemed fine though, and they didn't seem as if their brains were destroyed by acid.
Well...i thought it was pretty cool
Don't take the fucking marasa.
It is a pretty cool idea. I'd love to go see it, but what a waste of money!
what the fuck did I just watch?
People in Africa struggling to get a decent home, meanwhile they are making rooms look like shit on purpose LOL
@Bonesph

Yeah but I'm sure they haven't done this in Africa..
Anyone....anyone....anyone....
Sure, if that's what did it for you. Was that your sarcasm? Or was that a joke? hmm... More like, the entirety of the hotel rooms, bars, and circus event. You'll need to squeegee your third eye to get this one.
best front for a meth lab. a 'art' meth lab
And Justin Lowe is just as hot as his older brother, Rob...😍
