I have been diagnosed with PBA in 2014.. I was on Nuedexta for a while, but it seemed to just stop. To this day, I am on Gabapentin, which is ok... I was misdiagnosed for depression for years and years and years.. It is truly so hard to do simple things.. Holding down jobs are a big one.... Social life is pretty much absent.. Doctors typically have not heard of it.. Getting treatment is tough. My advice is to invest in many Jackie Onassis style sunglasses... and I am LOVING wearing a mask everywhere.. Masks have actually made me feel extremely more comfortable in simple places like grocery stores, gas station, etc. To all my PBA-ers... You are not alone, you are not crazy.

Hello sir My mother is supposed to be suffering from PBA .Major activities which i have noticed is ,she cries unintentionally with flooding tears and found herself unable to control her cry. As per her ,she feels that something is piercing her head internally causing intense pain . I has been more than a year and this crying has happened about 5-6 times in this interval. What's your opinion her,is she really a patient of PBA or depression or something else? If anyone is supoosed to have this phenomenon, what are the ways to cure it?

Hi sir I think one of the best treatement when dealing with PBA laughing version is to just laugh (not smile) for long period of times 20 min for example

Is this on a spectrum with people who cry when they feel any strong feelings or other people who laugh at inappropriate times?

A counselor I saw in college told me to see a doctor because they told me I might have PBA. And I haven’t had any of the physical problems that were listed except hitting my head pretty hard multiple times. I don’t know if I got hit hard enough though? I use to do MMA fighting and got a couple blows to the head. I had some before I did that too. I did MMA when I was 15-16 for over a year. I have a lot of similar symptoms that are very embarrassing. How can I know if I should see a doctor about this?

In my research it seems like your MMA could* have caused PBA. If the symptoms are affecting you (especially your mental health) in your daily life, I would recommend seeing a doctor who is familiar with PBA or one who can refer you to services such as therapy for it. Not to alarm you, but as you seem to have PBA, you may want to get things checked out in general. *As I am not a doctor, I do not diagnose so this is only a suggestion and not absolute - consult with a licensed medical professional for their advice. Take care!

Have you ever seen a patient presenting with crying and not laughing? Curious to know if they would be misdiagnosed with depression...

Good point. I have and I believe many with PBA are often misdiagnosed. Or they could have both. I see even many staff mistake PBA for other diagnoses quite often.

I recommend you talk to a healthcare provider about it and they may provide you with some treatments and referral for therapy. Good luck!

It gets better with medication and occupational therapy... After a while, you can learn to just own it. I have gotten to a place where I am typically not embarrassed... and I have learned to sit in the awkwardness...

Can PBA be connected to Autism? And can teenagers have this?

PBA is still not well understood but may be connected to conditions such as ADHD. It's possible, but I am not sure. If there is involvement in the brain, then it's possible to have this at any age, such as due to a traumatic brain injury. If you are concerned, I recommend speaking to your healthcare provider.
