I think higher frame rates have become a bigger selling point than higher resolutions nowadays. Even in the TV space with 120Hz and VRR. PS5 is tracking alongside PS4 in terms of sales, and will accelerate ahead now supply is available. There will always be people who only bought a system recently. For others they've had a machine since launch, it will be 4 years by the time PS5 Pro launches. In technology terms that's a lifetime. Appreciate the PS6 will be the next step on but one would hope for a good while longer as the pandemic caused so many delays it getting the ps5 out there. The current PS5 is not close to be pushed to its limits .
I’m on board with everything but the iterative upgrades thing. The issue is I know the staff at DF is used to buying superfluous PC upgrades for $10,00 a piece until these oversized raytracing PC suppositories are obsolete _in a few months_ after release. It is _undesirable_ to have to pay $500 every two years to make sure one or two games remain properly optimized, like a Mortal Kombat game. This is not going to happen. The iterative path is the wrong road for games. It’s not thoughtful. At a mere _shallow_ glance what works for phones _is dysfunctional_ for the masses when it comes to video games. It is identical to the flawed thinking behind Battle Passes in every game just because Fortnite got there first. It’s a hot-take and the wrong one with absolute certainty. Nintendo is a miserable option for anyone, but they have proven to understand this particular assignment, right down to the hard copy of a video game that only exists in a single space in time. People don’t even have good internet in the Midwest and now they’re being asked to invest another $500 after they’ve purchased 40 million _scalped_ PS5’s. Dudes! Iterative consoles are bad for business and are just as unrealistic an expectation for players as expecting players to buy into a Battle Pass grind for every single game. Time and money are openly disrespected. I would never make a PS5 Pro. Period. Imagine seeing GTA 5 on the shelf with a PS5 Pro label, the only person who would think this is a good idea is a shareholder. You know, those who know nothing. Game consoles are not as essential to quality of life as computers and smart devices. Until they are, iterative consoles are toast. I don’t do my taxes on a Steamdeck. I literally do and have done my taxes and work on my iPhone. Edit: People _“being accustomed to upgrading their hardware”_ is a corporate strawman take if I’ve ever heard one. That’s a wrong and cursed comment.
Just hope this hypothetical PS5 Pro offers 1440p120 mode besides 4K60.

I'm not bothered about 8k. I can barely get excited for 4k. 1440 at 60 is my personal sweet-spot. VR is more interesting to me now anyway and that's all about more FOV and decent frame rates without reprojection preferably. I'll be doing my usual of skipping until there is a decent leap in capability, which will be PS7 or whatever Xbox come up with if they are still bothering with consoles by then.
I'll take 1080p @ 60 fps over 4k 30 fps ANY DAY. They've fooled so many gamers with that 4k buzz word.
To be frank - the 9th generation of consoles have BARELY started, and only now are the games moving away from PS4 and Xbox One. This is a completely different situation from the 8th gen consoles that launched horrendously under-powered in the first place.

Silly point my dude Xbox or Sony doesn't choose to focus on FPS or Graphics or AI or whatetever.. Developers choose what to focus on.. Platform holders like xbox and Sony provide platforms(console) that are capable and devs choose what to do with it The xbox series and ps5 are very capable consoles not like the xbone and ps4..they can easily run 60 fps and many games at 120 fps.. But when devs decide to pumpthere games with more things thats when FPS tanks.. Starfield is 30FPS on console because bethesda pumps their games with alot of persistant world simulation stuff that takes up cpu cycles Even if consoles were as powerful as the most powerful pcs we'd still be having this issue because devs will just see the opportunity to put more in their games and care about performance after.. Its not Sonys or Microsofts fault Look at the Nintendo switch if they put games like Starfield on the switch it simply wouldn't run
4k has been around since 2001, and I still don't care at all. Higher framerate and 1440p is night and day compared to 4k choppy. The idea of 8k gaming is hilarious to me, and will be easily another 20 years before that's the standard.

Current PS5 right now already says it can do 8K, and realistically no game will and or should. We still have 30fps games, and it’s by choice when a developer decides they want to prioritize 4K graphics at 30fps. The cycle will always repeat every generation. It’s very rare to see a native 4K 60fps game that has very high visual fidelity on the level of Demon’s Souls Remake, Horizon: Forbidden West, RDR2, etc. This cycle will never change because of every generation, 30fps is still a reality due to the need for “CGI quality” graphics. Allow games to take a visual fit to make 60fps standard. Developers simply need to decide to make 60fps the standard no matter what and then go from there, never go back to 30fps.

8k 30fps = 4k 120fps. Both being nearly 1 billion pixels per second. It’s nothing more than marketing spiel. Problem is 4k, QHD (1440p) @ 60fps is 220 million pixels per second, 4k 30fps is 250 million pixels per second. Had TV’s not grown so large and skipped QHD it would never of been a problem.
The problem is 4k at min of 60 fps with ray tracing enabled. The base ps5 can't do that see have to choose between performance or fidelity mode. The pro should mean that we don't have to make that choice. Performance mode on a pro could mean 120 fps with ray tracing off. Aim for 8K with PS6 in 2026 when not only the hardware will be better but, the software and upscaling technologies have improved as well..
It's to mess with Microsoft. If they release a pro and get no response from Xbox, they win the power narrative. I remember they even said i the 2006 E3 presentation, "The next generation doesn't start until we say it does." So, this would be right up their marketing wheelhouse I would say. As for the notion of bridging a gap between PS5 and PS6, it would be no different than it was for the millions of PS4 owners that skipped the PS4 Pro and went to PS5. No issues, and a very nice performance jump to be enjoyed. Having a Pro variant won't make it any cheaper to R&D the PS6.
I think there are two easy reasons why some people will buy a PS5 Pro: PSVR 2 (you literally cannot ever have too much power for VR) and better chance of having stable 60fps at full 4k in games that struggle with it now.
For me 1080p is the standard and 2k is the sweet spot and 4k is where i think the ps5 pro or ps6 can meet that brute perfomance/power that is needed for that.
I dont understand how so few people that are gamers know nothing about the hardware "i want 4k, 60fps. I don't want to choose between fidelity and performance, it's last gen" It is so common... its not how the hardware works. Even ps1 had 60fps. Its not a hardware issue. It's a resource allocation decision. The only reason we had many early 60fps games were because they were essentially enhanced last gen games. As the hardware starts getting pushed, 30fps is a natural shift. The only way we would have 60fps in every game is if xbox and playstation applied a forced mandate on developers that they MUST reserve resources in order to hit 60fps by sacrificing other things. Instead of allowing the developers to choose Ps5 pro will likely have a 60fps performance mode on par with ps5 fidelity mode and a really high quality 30fps fidelity mode. The reason being is Sony now launching on pc obviously means they want to maintain parity as the generation evolves.

Cool video but why is this on DF Clips? It’s a 30 minute video of new content. What exactly is DF ‘clips’? Also doesn’t show up on Eurogamer almost missed it.
Olie's common sense>
Unreal 5 needs optimization to use multiple cores more effectively, not more hardware! I don't think a ps5 pro would be very useful right now...

This gen is well disappointing. Consoles struggling no way they can do a AAA game with 4K native at 60fps, then there’s raytracing which it simply doesn’t have the power to do. The norm in quality seems to be 1440 native at 30fps or slightly upscaled which is a long way from native

The PS6 should be able to run every UE5 game at 4k60fps but when the next gen UE6 comes out it will most likely struggle to run those games at 4k and the same cycle is gonna repeat and we'll need a ps6 pro
If it delivers native 4k at 60 fps for all the games in this generation... I'm all up for it.

@@rockapartie the Ps5 has 10 tflops of rDNA 2 and the xtx has over 60 rDNA 3 . If you aknowedge the ps5 can do 4k30 you can't even make the argument 600% more power can't do 4k 60. Do you even own an xtx and the xtx you call a disappointment is still the second most powerful GPU on the market today .

@@rockapartie it's similar architecture and fps still put it as a clear second best GPU in the world in rast. You say smallest jumps but your talking an igpu in the ps5 not a full fat xtx . It's not even close to a 6800xt rDNA 2 never mind a 6950xt. Compare there's tflops then

@@rockapartie then look at frames a 6600 is slightly slower than a ps5 on rDNA 2 gets on avg 35 frames at 4k an xtx gets 109. Guess that makes 4k 60 impossible in something with something more tuned directly to the console... Your xtx claim is just out right wrong

I can already tell most games that will be on PS5 Pro will not even upscale to 8k. Sony markets it so it's more appealing console but just like PS5 box says 8K support it's up to Sony to push all developers to utilize it but they choose not to. It's infuriating when you see games like remnant 2 running at PS3 resolution and upscales to 1440p texture.

Nobody cares about 8K and them bringing it up was just a way to try and play Devil's Advocate on what purpose it serves. All PS5 Pro needs to do is be a better 4K 60fps box than the base PS5. I really think they are downplaying the need because Xbox isn't coming out with a midgen refresh and they are on good terms with Microsoft.

@@SegaSnatchersbingo,my thoughts exactly, but to hear from John linneman that series X is the midgen refresh,i gotta ask,how is the series S gonna hold the fort if it's already struggling for the devs of baldurs gate 3 to run a splitscreen mode on it and more devs are coming forth with problems they run into with series S around!!
How about we just try to reach 4k at 60fps or 120fps.
It’s a 1080ti. 4k 60 ultra is the goal
