I would say what you experience looking at a flat 2d screen is never what you experience in the headset. Yeah on some games the graphics are not as good as a non vr version, or seem like a step back a generation, not true for all however. This is how I described PSVR to a friend over the phone a few days ago. It's like looking at a picture of skyscrapers in Chicago taken at ground level (non-VR) vs standing in that same spot in Chicago and looking up at the skyscrapers (VR). Or the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, the Pyramids, you get my point. Seeing a picture you can understand they are very tall, and kind of imagine what it'd be like standing there. But not the same as actually standing there looking up. Just like a 2d game has never tricked my brain for a second into thinking the arm on screen is mine.

Can confirm the difference within the headset is much more obvious as the social screen is capped to 720p. It's very hard to make out a difference in resolution there, but it is definitely there.

Very nice video. I definitely am thinking of getting a Pro, mostly for the PSVR which I have. Money is no issue, but that doesn't mean I want to waste it. I'm mostly interested in RE7 for it. One thing I wonder is if the added power of the Pro is being used sparingly to avoid making VR on the standard PS4 seem not worth it. Personally I like VR enough that if PS4 Pro makes the experience better, I wouldn't hesitate to get one. I imagine by the end of next year we may see a bigger gap in VR quality between the two Sony consoles.

Thanks for this video! It may be that those who already have a PS4 just hold what they have fire a while longer and spread out these purchases...while those, like me, who didn't already have one can justify the extra $100. I just got rid of my 4 year old laptop and am now a mostly happy console gamer. I admit I really wish consoles weren't so bottlenecked in their games and had the massive diversity of pc gaming. It's hard not to look at the Steam Autumn sale...but I am thrilled with my Pro/vr setup!

Ioannis Stf lol people didn't buy the OG PS4 because of exclusives, they bought it because of power (even though the power gap was tiny - but massively overblown by ponies). Xbox had a better launch line up than the PS4 and had better games and exclusives for the first 2years of this gen. Xbox comes out with Scorpio and suddenly ponies say power no longer matters?

Playstation Worlds has a huge difference in image quality!

Good to hear that Driveclub isn't using the Pro fully, at least. I just wish it was downsampled from a higher res, to increase image fidelity. I don't need extra effects.

No improvement on Driveclub VR? That game is so crazy low res that it desperately needs proper Neo support.

Why isnt the feed taken off the splitter for the headset? Surely this would give the split image that is sent where one could compare the true improvements towards the headset for both consoles?

I don't have a 4k TV, but even Normal games look better, i just can't put my finger on it, but there is something different. I play a lot of Resogun, and there is very little slowdown, and I don't think the game has been patched. so im happy...

@@vin7786 yes you can sync all you PS4 stuff, to you PS4 pro, it’s all done automatically via your psn account. The PS4 pro, is a very good machine, and if I’m honest, I upgraded to the PS5, and wish I had of waited, not much good next gen stuff out at the moment....👍

So glad you finally done this video. I can finally tell some people to watch this instead of trying to convince them the VR is better on the pro. Not night and day difference but noticeably better. I think the future games will be evenmore better imo.

Hey guys could you make a video testing the different options of vsynch on nividia's control panel? There's a nice little feature called fast synch that kinda works like an adaptive synch but with no tearing, however there is stutter. So could you test the frame time with fast synch?

I wouldn't say the pro upgrade is "slight." I played VR on OG PS4 for months, constantly annoyed by the blurry ass picture. I eventually only played it if I had a buzz. When I got a pro, the improvement was amazing, you can nitpick and say it's only "slight" but it's like having blurry eyesight only to get glasses and the pro are your glasses. It's completely changed my enjoyment for vr

Could you do a framerate analysis on Verdun on the ps4?

In the Project Diva games the Pro renders at 90hz which makes the moving 3D models appear a lot clearer. I felt it was a big difference between base and pro. But maybe these games aren't what people are interested in... =/

So, it doesn't show up as well in the social screen? Maybe you could say it again, just to clarify!

Actually, it is good that he is doing it. I've seen video's before when mentioning stuff once or twice and you still see the comments filled with critique where you wonder if they were even listening to what was said. They've already done some other video's on VR and clearly said that the social screen isn't representive of what is seen in the headset, yet people still are judging it by the social screen. So yeah, they have to mention it several times, because people don't seem to listen very well. Digital Foundry is always technical and that's why I'm interested in coming here. Although that I know technical data doesn't always mean something during playing a game itself. Rather, lately this data is used to bash a system. Not by Digital Foundry themselves, but the commentors on videos. Like the test Digital Foundry did with the Last of Us. They pointed out the framedips on the Pro and why that could be. And people only hear the "framedips stuff an nothing else, use that to make it sound way worse than it is. I've seen comments on youtube video's where they refer to that video and how it runs "much worse" and "terrible" on the Pro. Really, 60fps vs the occassional dips to 56fps is all of a sudden terrible and unplayable. Knowing that most people wouldn't even see/notice the dips to 56fps. So really no need to adress Digital Foundry for repeating themselves over and over again, but maybe adress youtube viewers to listen to what was said and not what they want to hear.

That's because a dip to 56fps where it was 60fps on a weaker console (or, more accurately, a dip to 20fps where it was 30fps on a weaker console, and yes it is blatantly noticeable) is _completely unacceptable_. Why should anyone pay another $400 for worse performance after already having spent $400 on the orignal PS4? Especially considering it's not just The Last of Us, it's nearly *_every_* game that has more severe framerate drops (they drop lower and/or last longer). Oh, and who are you to say people wouldn't notice dips to 56fps?! It is noticeable. I was playing Saints Row The Third on PC a month ago, and for some reason regardless of settings, it runs at about 54-56fps whenever you do Insurance Fraud. I noticed it immediately without a frame counter on screen because the controls were suddenly more sluggish than they were at 60fps. So yeah, when a game has noticeable framerate drops on a brand new $400 console where it does not have them on an older $300-$400 console, it is terrible. Something you forgot is that many of the Digital Foundry presenters themselves have bashed the PS4 Pro for having these problems where it absolutely should not have them. Maybe you should have listened to what was said instead of what you wanted to hear. Quit defending this utter potato of a console that's worse than its $300 older brother.

The biggest downside to the PS4 Pro for me? Having to disconnect it every time I want to use HDR on my TV. We shouldn't have to choose between using the features of our PS4 Pro or using the PSVR. They are both from Sony and should have been built to work together.

To be fair, that's a downside of PS VR, not the PS4 Pro. Regular PS4s were patched to support HDR as well, and they have the same problem. It's the PS VR that sucks in this case, not the Pro. I absolutely agree though. What was Sony thinking?! How did they bake this problem into their hardware?! I swear Sony is utterly incompetent sometimes.

I just want to point out that YT has vastly greater compression than Vimeo for example. If we are pixel-peeping I think Vimeo would be superior platform to upload and compare. I am aware that YT is more popular and has greater social features, but the image quality is hard to miss. I hope you found this comment useful.

Not had chance to use PSVR on my Pro (been a very busy 2 or so weeks since launch, and that doesn't look set to change soon), but it's good to see what I can expect when I do. Cheers.

+ORYU Yes, it looks 'worse' than playing it on TV, but you really need to experience it in VR to see how good it actually is. The added immersion and framerate smoothness made the game more fun for me than the non-VR game even though its clearly not as detailed. Also, Driveclub VR seems to make a lot of people nauseous. I haven't had any ill effects, but many others have. Try it out yourself though, my experience isn't going to necessarily be the same for you or anyone else.

Would love to see a Rez Infinite comparison

Might the blurriness from the standard PS4 been due to reprojection? Maybe the PS4 Pro simple renders more frames, reducing reprojection and producing a tidier image. Just my 5c

And this is early in its life. Will only get better. I gave my PS4 to a family member as was not playing a lot and ended up splashing on the pro and I don't even have a 4K tv but was mightily impressed by Battlefield 1. I don't recall any game looking that good on console. To get these visuals at only 1080p for 380 euros I'm not gonna complain. VR though I'm not convinced yet. Maybe a price drop will tempt me. ***** that kind of PC is a big investment so for what I paid i cant complain but i'm seriously looking at a new build soon. I can see why pc gaming is so popular now, I've watched some streams. But for a playstation pro i think they've done a good job. Just plug in, sit on the sofa and go makes it easy but i know why PC gamers love their machines. But I don't know why there is so much negativity on these sites though between different types of gamers.

@Daniel Evans. I don't have a 4K TV yet, either, but I'm very impressed with the Pro's super-sampled 1080p image quality. It really makes a difference. Ratchet & Clank and Shadow of Mordor look glorious. The image is sharp-yet-smooth and really clean with no unsightly anti-aliasing artifacts.

basically it's just like getting a slightly upgraded graphics card on PC then...you see small changes and a bump up in resolution but nothing that makes you go WOW

Please do an update video with newer games and older ones if they've been patched.

I never knew Drive Club vr had a third person view! most useless feature ever imho.

I have ps4 Pro & recently got version 2 VR set with version 2 camera.having played my brothers standard ps4 with version 1 VR set with version 1 camera.what I experienced in mine blew my mind,I would also say any game that has been ps4 Pro enhanced,including any vr games that have also been ps4 enhanced.there will be evident & seen improvements to graphics detailing & the smooth rendering of them. Having seen so with my own eyes as regards resident evil vr. Played on my brothers all standard ps4 & vr,was ok I thought for my first time in vr but then on my own ps4 Pro everything enhanced upgraded I was totally wowed,it blew my mind how good it was.sadly it does mess with your brain where you're not moving but your brain thinks you are & can create dizzy sicky feeling,I highly recommend taking regular breaks for your brains sake.hehe,lol

Hands down get a Pro. Not only you will get enhancements to the games, be it a higher resolution or more graphical details, but it translates to non-VR titles as well. With that in mind, if budget is of consideration, your kids won't be disappointed with the results from a base PS4. But if budget is no issue get a Pro. The VR titles that make use of it, most all of them these days, look stunning.

FOXTRA XRAY yep, this video was outdated and DF didn't know that social screen image doesn't mirror VR headset video. Games like Rez, SUPERHOT, Resident Evil 7 and Wipeout all get massive improvements in performance and visuals on Pro

I was hoping that rain would be added back into Driveclub VR but sadly not, as for the overall image quality of PS4 Pro-VR games they are definately sharper and this video doesnn't come close to representing it

Its the same other than Area X. Clean your headset perhaps lol. Its amazing how fast the lenses get coated with eye-oil or whatever that stuff is. The microfibre cloth included isn't enough to get rid of it.

Mike Caddick My lenses are spotless. I bought some alcohol and ammonia free eye glass cleaning solution. I got the one designed for coated lenses to be on the safe side, as I believe the PSVR lenses have an anti-fog coating.

Even as a Playstation-gamer, I'm put off this whole VR-thing, they didn't do enough to keep it up with vive and oculus rift, I get that they made it cheaper, but I expected the same quality at least on all games and not something downgraded (Driveclub). Don't see myself ever picking this up

reyesarsenal9 lol. Obviously it's not gonna be the same graphics your gonna see on a standard tv. There is so much more computing power required for PSVR. Thats gonna be the case for any VR headset. I wouldn't buy the psvr for the graphics. I'd buy it for the experience. Once you're in that thing you forget all about the downgraded graphics because you feel so immersed. I like it. I don't care what the peasants say.

Find a demo near you try it and come back.

I can attest to Rigs looking better. Not drastic but just enough to make things in the distance not look blurry. The best improvement I've seen was in Playroom VR. It looks excellent on the PS4 Pro in comparison to the standard PS4.

Its the PSVR 960x1080 per eye thing. So quite literally half the resolution you'd see on your TV reaching each eye. Bluray quality is the same in VR no matter if you have a standard or Pro console, and its also impacted on what 'cinematic' mode you're using as 1:1 pixel mapping isn't possible on any of them so quality suffers. Really annoying that sony won't let us play 3D movies via the PSVR as well, just 2D ones.

You can now play 3d blu rays. You can also play 3d adult movies via the littlestar app, although the quality depending on where you get them can vary wildly, as well as when they were produced since early ones are not near as good as the ones made more recently.

In 2019 there is a quite big difference between ps4 pro and flat with certain pro enhanced vr game. For instance Doom vfr, Astrobot, Resident evil 7, Wipeout omega, Batman arkham vr, The London heist. Doom vfr graphics are stunning with supersampling !!

hi guys, first I want to congratulate you on changing my opinion haha although sometimes I do believe it's in the best interest of a gamer to live in ignorance after buying a new game. when I started whatching your vids I got an impression you was simply always making videos that were bad for gaming but since have decided it's a pretty much a balanced channel with many for and against the tech which I must apologise for being stereotypical. Anyway I agree with this video and can support that whilst the social screen does not give a true reflection, it's indeed upgraded in many games. also i agree it may only be slight but in vr it only needs to be slight to echo into a massive increase for a player. the slight crisp upgrade and further draw distances aid in keeping you immersed for longer. over all I have found most all games with the patch better and more enjoyable playing on the pro which I believe was it's intended platform anyway. now all they need to do is start making real quality games for it haha.

Mike Caddick OK first of all you may want to change the way you interpret posts. there is possibly many reasons why I would think its balanced , instead of letting your own mind jump to your own calculations. I started watching this channel a few weeks back, in which I begun to see videos reporting bad frame drops, not much of a difference in the pro. I have on many videos wrote out a rant asking that it stopped due to not wanting to know the game I just bought is broke but decided better of it, however the last few videos have been more positive towards gaming in general so for let's say 4 to 5 videos, which is my subscription length, half negative half positive, I would clearly call that balanced bright spark. all viewers are different, maybe you want to have a think about that. good day

I just ordered a Vive on Black Friday. I'm so excited to try VR for the first time!

Just got my google daydream rebate with my google pixel xl phone. I am really contemplating on returning my psvr. There is more screen door effect on the daydream but in general the image is way sharper and it is so much more convenient to just throw it on with out cords. Get it together sony. It really bothers me that everything is so pixelated on the psvr. If my damn cell phone can handle vr, then the ps4 and psvr should be leaps and bounds better but it is not.

The PS5 does in fact improve resolutions on games that had dynamic res and FPS are locked to the highest bounds. Some games even got PS5 BC updates with games getting 4K supersampled to the headset or unlocked FPS to 120fps. I play games like Doom:VFR, Firewall, TWD: Saints & Sinners, and GT Sport and they all benefit from the extra power. Also load times are improved which is good because you aren't just sitting there looking at load screen with the headset on. You might also want to keep your headset when PSVR2 comes as it is not BC with this. Reason why is because controls and the way the games work with the headset since the camera is outside where as with PSVR2 the cameras are built-in the headset. Sony reportedly made devolping on PSVR2 easy so hopefully some devs go back and make updated native PSVR2 versions.

Would you say the graphics of the original PS4 VR affects your immersion? Saving money for one, but I am not interested in buying another console.

I have a base PS4, and although I may sell it and buy a Pro or trade it in on one, there are plenty of games worth playing with nice graphics right now on the base model. The immersion of the VR experience trumps some extra pixels on a flat screen (non VR) by far. I would get a bundle that comes with the version 2 headset though. From the videos I've seen the difference isn't ever night and day, just little things, things look a little sharper, or certain things have more detail. I haven't seen a video where it looks like the same game on two different generation consoles. Most channels have all said it's not worth the upgrade if you already have the base model.

Pro looks like a new born child only future could tell us if it'll be blooming or being nothing more than OG PS4. We need to see it for sure to deicide for now just wait and watch.

at 1:47 I can see a light blue ball glitching out on top, of the ps4 pro version.

No. You will see them in the headset. If you have a Pro games, save for few exceptions like Driveclub VR, will show a higher resolution, cleaner image and extra details or effects. Regardless the TV you have once you turn on PSVR the output to the TV will be 720p. You will see the difference in the headset.

If anyone is wondering if a PS4 pro is worth it for VR. YES. YES IT IS. I played Farpoint, Starblood Arena, Bravo Team and Resident Evil on a PS4 slim on psvr and it was blurry and grainy. Once I got a PS4 pro, super sharp and much more enjoyable experience! So yes if you want to do PSVR you NEED A PS4 Pro to fully enjoy it. I also do PC vr with mixed reality headsets, have used oculus and HTC Vive. The PRO is absolutely worth it if you do or don't already have a ps4 slim or original if you want to do psvr.

What about Eve Valkyria?

No surprise with the graphics on PS VR, since its a budget VR. Its actually pretty decent for its price especially if you're an existing owner of a PS4. Best thing XBONE has right now is Kinect. And we all know how the Kinect is right now. And its gonna cost a fair amount to have a fast enough PC with Oculus or HTC Vive for a good VR experience.

Yes it is. It is noticeable. It is worth saying that on a base PS4 you will still get to enjoy VR just fine, but with a Pro you will get higher resolution, meaning a sharper image in the headset, and depending on the developer better draw distances and more/higher quality effects. The differences are noticeable for the better. Some first generation PSVR titles weren't patched, or made full use of the Pro's power, which means there is no difference between playing on a Pro or base PS4 but the vast majority of games will play better on a Pro. Some of those first gen titles are Driveclub and Here They Lie.

NO i still haven't got a ps4 but my kids do so i just take their games DRAKES - SPIDERMAN - AND OTHERS WHEN THEY HAVE NO USE FOR THE AND PUT THEM ASIDE BECAUSE PS5 WILL PLAY THEM AT 4K60 Other than than that PC for everything else

IMO.. A new GPU will get you better resolution and textures, but the framerate needs a CPU upgrade in tandem to achieve it. The PRO is sitting pretty with only a GPU. Hence why every game has dismal frame rate improvements. 1080/60 is still tough for the PRO...

There aren't in some aspects (you can clearly see the differences in interactive lighting, draw distance, or enhanced effects) but yes, the output resolution for the social screen is a locked 720p for both consoles. This means that whatever is recorded is recorded at the same resolution. It is also worth pointing you are only looking at four titles here, and that since this video in 2016 when most developers were still figuring out how to use the extra power of a Pro.

StormRider2 I believe you are not ready to buy PlayStation VR like me. Our main focus is to buy a full game coming to PlayStation 4 and pro. After PlayStation vr success, you can buy it right away.

Rigs looks a LOT better on the Pro. I wish you wouldve gave it a better comparison in this video. Its as big a difference as Robinson is for the most part.

test the patched games that now run at a stable 30 fps! Deus Ex, Watch Dogs are now running at a stable 30fps. Developers are now starting to get the hardware.
