After Sony's falling out with Nintendo and creating PlayStation as its own platform, Sony rode success to the very top. The PS1 and PS2 saw landslide victories against their competitors, making PlayStation the dominant brand in games. For Sony Computer Entertainment President & CEO Ken Kutaragi, this meant PS3 had to go all out. Creating the powerful, yet difficult to master Cell Processor, and cramming an enormous amount of tech into the PS3. But a high price tag, and lack of quality games caused Sony to fall from grace. What really happened? This is the story of Ken Kutaragi's final console, the PlayStation 3.

The best thing about the PS3 is it taught Sony a ton about what _not_ to do with a console. Funny though that in the end, the console still worked out for them.

@@afistfulofpimples1745 I don't know if the PlayStation 5 will be a failure because of a lot of PlayStation 4 users jumping to the PlayStation 5, I think it will be something like the 7th gen on steroids but this time Sony and Microsoft will be using the same architecture. both have really good advantages, Sony's got exclusives and Microsoft's got studios, Sony can keep on expanding on the franchises we as customers love and Microsoft can create franchises we will love, so it'll be hard to win this gen since Microsoft's doing almost everything the right way, and Sony hasn't spoken that much about the PlayStation 5, we know specs, controller and we had that Unreal Engine 5 demo that was made on PlayStation 5 hardware but since Epic Games is not exclusive to Sony well, that same tech demo could be run on XBOX Series X hardware, so, yeah. I can't tell the future, but Sony is loosing its shine, in terms of choosing a side, well I believe you can already tell by my comment.

@@66kaisersoza who could forget that. Sony was never the same again after that episode. They doubled down on DRM, slashing Linux support on PS3, etc. Back then me and my friends had a strong, very strong feeling that, if Sony had teamed up with Valve things would have been incredible. Sony focusing on hardware and Valve on software, providing Steam with everything that comes with it. We had a glimpse of that with Portal 2. But it ALL but vanished with the 2011 incident. Valve continued its journey with steam os, steam remote play, its own game controller and now the Steam Deck. Fast forward today and maybe the Vita would have had a second breath, you would get no PS+ BS as well, etc. I truly think they would have accomplish something great working together... If only Sony did that a year or 2 prior to 2011 when they were already struggling to keep up with Xbox game pass.

After the PS1's success, I'd argue. The PS2 was (and still is with homebrew) notorious for being way too complicated to program for compared to the other three consoles of that generation (and it's not even the strongest, the Xbox is). Sony simply carried this design mentality to the PS3, and it messed the system's launch up then.

Ryan has been the go to source for the PlayStation community on KZread for years and these documentary specials are just brilliant. Thanks brother for the effort & excellent content. The PS3 brought me back to gaming and is my favorite console. I always have gotten into new generations later in the life cycles i.e. I bought a PS1 in 1996, a PS2 in 2004 right after San Andreas came out and didn't get a PS3 until 2012. First off I go in phases with gaming from being excited and all in to not playing for months. What has happened with getting the new gens later in their life cycles is that when I do get them it's usually after the Slim hardware revision, so the hardware has been debugged and streamlined. As for software, there's a huge amount of AAA games that are now on sale and very cheap on the used market. By getting a PS3 shortly before the PS4 I got to experience all of the prior hits at lnd Last Of Us. In addition to a huge backlog and going in & out of gaming I just got a PS4 Pro last year. Just like with the PS3 I've enjoyed great deals on games that were just $60 a few years ago (just bought Assassin's Creed Odyssey for like $12 or something). I have had a blast with the PS4 Pro, but my PS3 Slim is still hooked up on my gaming 4K TV and is still fired up occasionally. This novella is to give kudos to Ryan but also , by giving my history with PlayStation, give my $0.02 on the upcoming PS5 launch. Like the other Playstation releases I am waiting on getting a PS5. Availability is probably forcing that even if I wanted to I couldn't get one, but my trepidation is down to the fact that Sony launch hardware (like all companies hardware for that matter) has had issues. Seeing that the SSD is married to the motherboard really concerned me and I would wager that in 2-3 years the Slim version will make the main SSD removable just like the extended storage drive option. Plus we are really in the depths of diminishing returns now. This isn't a leap like Atari 2600 to NES or even PS3 to PS4 (which was appreciable but not gobsmacking). The PS5 will perform better as far as frame rates and the addition of ray tracing and other graphical fidelity improvements but sitting 6-8 feet away I'd love to see what the A-B blind test reveals for CyberPunk on PS4 and PS5. I sincerely believe most gamers would have trouble distinguishing between the two versions. Patience friends.

@@weathersponge5000 BULL****.. That's absolutely not true. Do some research instead of spreading lies. Sony's PlayStation division started turning a profit on PlayStation 3 at the end of 2008. They were able to renegotiate contracts with their hardware partners such as IBM, which allowed them to reduce the PlayStation 3 retail cost to $300. From that point onward, Sony turned a profit each and every quarter and year over year. Meanwhile, Microsoft lost massive amounts of money on the Xbox 360. The 360 had a failure rate of over 54% due to them using cheap and crappy parts. They even lied about the severity of the problem for years until the hundreds of lawsuits started rolling in. When Microsoft finally acknowledged the problem, they had to write off 20 billion dollars in losses to fix the issue. That's not including the amount of money they were forced to pay to settle the lawsuits. Microsoft lost A CRAP TON of money on 360. Also, the sales figures for the 360, while accurate, are highly inflated. Most Xbox 360 owners had to buy the console at least 2-3 times. The actual percentage of people who REALLY owned a 360 was less than 50 million.

The 7th generation was a case of polar opposites. The Xbox 360 raced out of the gate, but a substantial hardware issue, a less than exceptional reception in Asia, and gradual diminishing of exclusive titles narrowed the gap after every year. The PS3 had a very tumultuous start, but strong support from first party developers, fortuitous adoption of Blu Ray as opposed to HD-DVD, and a commitment to delivering incredible exclusives all the way up until the end of its lifecycle definitely helped carry it over the finish line in terms of bang for buck. Jack Tretton’s commitment to 10-years of support might have seemed like a massive cope in the moment, but looking back, he definitely wasn’t wrong.

I was luckily gifted an 80gb PS3 Fat back in 2010 and it, to this day, blows me away. The Linux operability, attempt at web browsing, initial XMB (so damn clean!), and dedicated computing for the greater good were truly special and unheard of in the gaming world. To this day, I still play Castlevania Lords of Shadow every year in awe of the graphics - they still stand up to unreal engine 4 to this day. I sincerely think PS3 didn't get the love it deserved for something that could really do it all. The chip on chip architecture was truly commendable and will be missed since my stack of PSX games aren't playable by any other console (PS2 is still difficult to emulate these days). Great video, thank you for taking me back to the halcyon days of the PS3 and it's glorious piano black finish. Hopefully the modular PS5 might consider following the footsteps of its predecessors.

I have to say, when I opened my ps3 on day 1 of release I must have stared at it for a minute like Patrick Bateman looking at the business cards in American Psycho. The ps3 at the launch was (at that time) the height of playstation. I was in gaming heaven. The ability to play ps1, ps2, and blu ray movies along with mgs4 was such a wonderful time. It's a shame how the way the ps3 was made would be a disaster for developers and not being backwards compatible with future games on the ps4. Given that, I have zero regrets buying one. Wonderful documentary! More like these documentaries please!
