Prussia's Soldier King's Scary Court Life (1713-1740)

Last week we looked at Prussia’s Soldier King, Frederick Wilhelm I, and what he meant for Prussian history. As he ascended to the throne, within days it became evident he was the polar opposite of his art- and pleasure-loving and much liked father. He immediately cut all ‘unnecessary’ costs, expanded its military to a near ridiculous degree and as a result a strong and efficient civil service developed.
Now, I briefly touched upon his court life in the previous video. Due to his preference for sober, robust manners and deprecating humour, his close circle of confidants consisted of military men, crude, blunt and masculine. In this Tabakscollegium or Tobacco Ministry, the men maintained a form of raw humour that didn’t just border on bullying but consisted of absolutely tormenting any poor victim they decided to set their eyes on. In this video, we’ll have a closer look at Prussia’s Tabakscollegium and the anecdotes of their royal bullying… something that made a surprising impact on me, as the sheer venomous conduct of these men honestly astounded me and put the Soldier King in a different light.

What the Prussian court did to Gundling was terrible, but you have to admit that ghost prank was pretty good...

Frist, let me say my definition of "sober cour life" might be different ;-) And then: while i have read that the epitaph allegedly has the inscription you stated, strangely i can not find a picture that confirms it. The picture you showed and that i found has a different inscription: Alhier lieget begraben der weiland hoch und wohlgebohrene herr, Herr Jacob Paul Freiherr von Gundling, Sr. königl Majestät in Preussen hochbestalt gewesenen Ober Ceremonien Meister Kammer Herr, Geheimer Ober Appelations-kriegs-und Hoff Kammer Rath, Präsident der königl. Societät der Wissenschaften, Hoff und Kammer Gerichts Rath, auch Historiographus ect: Welcher, von allen die ihn gekannt haben, wegen Seiner Gelehrsamkeit bewundert, wegen Seiner Redlichkeit gepriesen, wegen Seines Umgangs geliebet und wegen Seines Todes beklagt worden Anno 1731 I would translate it to (i'm not a professional linguist or anything like that): Here lies burried, his honour, Lord Jacob Paul Baron Gundling, his majesty of prussia’s former: senior ceremony master chamberlain, secret adviser, genealogy-, war- and court advisor, präsident of the royal society of science, court and juristical advisor and historipgrapher ect.: Who by all who knew him was: admired for his eager to learn, praised for his integrity loved for his pleasant nature and mourned for his death. anno 1731

He was such a brilliant man . I don't understand why he didn't start fighting one tormentor every time he's tortured. As long as you don't hit the illegitimate king ,you would be fine. Every man knows that if another guy earns his self respect and honor ,he becomes respected by everyone. That stands true today . Absolutely.

I didn't know about this until I watched a documentary about it after uploading: the rabbits were Gundling's crest. They symbolised cowardice and fleeing. It's so very sad!
