Pruning The Allotment Fruit - Autumn and Summer Fruiting Raspberries, Currants and a Gooseberry Bush

Over the past couple of weeks I've been doing the annual pruning of my fruit trees and bushes (Autumn and Summer Fruiting Raspberries, Currants and a Gooseberry Bush, plus the Apple and Pear tree).
Some fruit areas of the plot I took over last year were a bit overgrown so pruning shears in hand see how I tackled the job.
Also watch out for lesson 1 in Dave's Guide to Plant Identification.

Yeah yeah so people keep telling me 😂😂 it’s bloody cold and wet here. But you are getting the big and messy jobs done so growing times should be awesome 😎. Have a fantastic week Dave and happy gardening 👩‍🌾, Ali 🌧️🌦️🇨🇦

Thankyou, it's been very wet here too, but signs of life appearing, I'm almost there with the winter jobs....almost. Hope it warms up there soon for you. Take care and have a great week. Cheers

Great job on those fruit bushes, some difference! There was alot of them😁 All your fruit trees pruned and tidy, it's great when it's done! Not easy when it's so wet and cold. The daffs are beautiful

Yes it looks a lot better once it's done for another year, hopefully will be a good year for fruit. I'm fed up with all the wet weather, roll on spring. So pleased the daffs worked out, thanks for the comment, cheers

Thanks, I'm really pleased they worked out when I moved them. A nice touch of colour in the gloomy weather at the moment. Cheers

Love the Before and After pictures Dave, shows how much work you've done in the past couple of weeks. I have summer raspberries patch and I find just grabbing down halfway and pulling a bit to the side, if it snaps clean from the ground it is old and done. If it just flexes or feels solid then that is probably a good one. Still a bit pokey and recommended to wear gloves but nothing like the gooseberry bush by the sounds of it.

Yes it was a good learning experience for me moving onto the summer fruiting ones. I applied your snap technique once I thought I'd done them all and went back round to check if I'd missed any , which I of course had. Looks a lot better now, and hopefully a fruitful year ahead, cheers

Oh my word that one was tricky to get out, it was pretty heavy too. Quite satisfying when it came out though!

I'm tempted to get steel gauntlets every time I deal with my gooseberry bushes.

I've only got the one bush so not too bad but they are pretty spiky, you definitely know when you've been caught. Maybe steel gloves is the way forward :) Cheers

Good job on the pruning. Torally gelpful info. For the raspberries and black currants, do you ever put grass or straw on the ground to stop the fruit rotting or being eaten

I've cut the lower currant bush branches off to keep them off the ground and the raspberries grow on the top bits so I don't have to worry about any fruit touching the ground. Raspberries generally get left alone by creatures on my plot but I do have an issue with the currants but it's the aerial threat of birds rather than anything on the ground, but apart from covering them up which I don't like doing, there's not much I can do. The birds can have their share as long as they leave some for me. Cheers
