    Excellent presenter....clear, precise instructions. Good camera work, too. Thanks so much for taking time to show us. LSU Agri is one of my very favorite sources of information. From your neighbor in Texas. Jesus bless.

    I just obtained some property that I just discovered has muscadine grape vines! It is very overgrown at this point. How do I go about sustaining or maintaining the vine? I would really like to get it under control and reap the benefits of the grapes. Only discovered the vine at the very end of the peak season!

    I'm planting mascadine's in my garden. It's heavy clay soil. I'd like to have them in raised beds. What size should I make the beds and what should I fill them with?

    they love sandy soil mix river sand and some top soil only need 6-8 inches deep just remove clay in a 3 ft circle replace it with a tub full sand and soil plant the vine in the center or make a box 3 ft square 8inchs deep fil it full only need 1 plant every 25 ft takes 3 yrs vine to cover 2 wire 12 ft each direction orient the wire north and south not east and west ( best sun light for vines )

    Go with number 9 wire. You can find it at almost any hardware store or rural king. Usually comes in 50-100 feet per roll for under $20

    Really good and educational video. Question, how do you remove the grass around the vine? I wouldn’t think you’d want to spray any chemicals. Thanks for sharing.

    I saw some farmers just used weeding tools to unroot the weeds/ grass around the main trunks in about 2 feet diameter circles. They then leaved those unrooted materials on top of that area to shade the trees/ plants roots and let them rotted to return back the nutrients to the vines/ trees. It doesn't take long for each trunk, but I guess they would have to do that periodically. The grass/ weeds that are far away from the trunks then you don't have to work on them. I have question on how long they keep the muscadine vines until the time they get too old to produce?

    you can use roundup ----- round up has enter thru the leaves i took black plastic 4 in corrg, drain pipe cut at 18 inch split so you can slide it on the vine keep rat rabbits and such from chewing on the vine at gd level so you spray without getting any thing on the vine

    I have a muscadine vine that I planted from seeds. I have prolific growth, but no grapes. I have read that you have to have a male and female plant in order for the vines to produce. How do you determine the sex of the plant?

  • @kqdwills

    @kqdwills

    6 ай бұрын

    From the internet: Muscadine don't grow true from seeds. That could result infertile vines, or vines with fruits that don't have the good characteristics of the parents. Muscadine seeds can be grown, but the resulting plant will not grow true from seed. Muscadine grapes prefer to grow in sunny, well-drained soils of USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. The only muscadine grape that grows reliably from seed is the wild muscadine grape. To grow muscadine grapes from seed, cut the muscadine grapes in half, remove the seeds from the pulp of each grape, and set the clean muscadine grape seeds onto a paper towel to dry overnight. Muscadines will grow best in zones 6-10.

    You tell the sex by the flowers. Male grapes will have a large clusters of flowers but they never produce berries. The female flowers will be pointed. It takes a few years before they start producing flowers. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nGGulsarlqSqgLQ.html

    The fruit will be picked off new wood. That’s one major reason you’re pruning..to get new growth.

    say it this way fruit comes on new wood-----that is 1 reason for pruning if you dont prune you will have a rats nest of worthless vines only leave 3 nodes on each side chute just leave side chute 1 every 8 inch take out the rest by april next year you can not tell you pruned it grows back so fast add 10-10-10 mid june july aug some also add cal, nitrate in the fall helps relieve stress of fruiting good luck
