These lessons were very helpful. I have fruit trees in property In LA and they have been neglected for many years. Pruning as you suggest here in this video will be a great improvement of the appearance of these trees. Thanks.

So informative. I can’t thank you enough. I used your IV organic on my newly planted avocados, and Washington orange. I sprayed the leaves as well. We’ve had a few heat spells since, and the leaves and new growth are supple and healthy as can be . ;) Now to get to my lemon tree. I now know how to go at trimming it the right way, as opposed to 20 years of doing it the wrong way . Lol thanks again you guys :)

What is the best cold hardy root stock for citrus?

What about metal coverings around the trunk to protect from rodents? Since that limits sun exposure and air circulation, does that affect the health of the tree?

This has been great and so informative. I'm new to all this and I have a couple of lemon trees and one lime tree, all in containers, that I've pruned only once. I've pruned the lower branches only, and as a result, they've grown straight up to the height of about 18 feet. And most of that growth is the main stem. I want them to grow into a rounder shape and to keep them to a lower height. I want them grow outward instead of upward. But is it now too late since they've been growing straight up unattended for so long? I've had them now for about 8 years; the lime tree about 4 years. I'm worried about traumatizing them to the point that they won't recover. I'm in San Antonio and though we generally have mild winters, we do have certain days that can drop well below freezing. But our first freeze usually doesn't happen until the last days of November into early December. And some winters, we don't have any below freezing days. Please let me know if it is too late to cut the main stem.

She said her leaves were dense and you can't see the trunk at all - is that good? I heard that there should be space for air flow. My lemon tree is struggling and it has very little air flow.

Charles does the abundant sucker growth coming from the rootstock give an indication that the root system & the top canopy are working vibrantly together? Would a sucker branch give an indication of the root system by itself if there are off-colored leaves? I was thinking that suckers would show the overall health of the plant quicker being from the base. Rather than from say, the upper canopy. I understand they should be pruned away & may be used to create new rootstock plants. Would you ever want to graft an upper canopy scion to its existing sucker on the same plant, if you want to reshape the tree or replenish a tree near its lifecycle end? From say; storm damage or an attack from an outside source?

I would love to have been there. I know the smell of my own citrus is divine. to have an abundance of trees everywhere must have rocked the sensory factor into overdrive. Way cool. and by the looks of her trees, citrus greening is not an issue with her?

Happy Sunday David!!! :-) The rootstock will always favor itself, the suckers, over the grafted scion (flavor of the fruit tree). Sucker growth is most active in the early part of spring as the energy stored in the roots over winter become released throughout the tree, starting at the base. Allowing the suckers to grow will "suck" the health away from the desired grafted tree growth & fruit production/ quality-- so it's important to spot suckers early and remove them. However, if you have a damaged/ ill tree (as you suggested due to storm... or another example would be severely sun damaged tree trunk/ primary branches), then YES, I would recommend grafting scion (quality fruit branches) onto the sucker rootstock to re-create and rejuvenate the live and longevity of the fruit tree. I’ve had great results on old trees that just aren’t doing great kinda just surviving with little to poor fruit by howling out the inside and removing the lower branches. Being careful to not to expose any trunk or limbs. Citrus will grow up then curl down once fruit is set so if you have a smaller tree don’t remove the branches going straight up they will come down marking them with a ribbon can be a good way to observe this happening. Howling out from inside removes the oldest parts of the tree older trees can get really thick and tangled up without care.

Melinda Dixon Hello 👋 IV Organic 3-in-1 Plant Guard has the 7 oils that repel pests from biting through the coated (brush-on application is best). Additionally, as of November 2018, the base ingredients now include Diatomaceous Earth, which would shred the exoskeleton if any borer within the tree tries to get out, or attempting to bore into. So, yes, you can apply the IV Organic product now, and reapply in 30-90 days to close any holes caused by borers that came out of the tree. Keep me posted on your peach tree borer successes!!! I was hoping to see on video some pruning on the inside of tree. Just reducing the tall branches on top and the longer vertical branches is not enough. I've worked on citrus trees never thinned out on the inside. The client has told me the tree service guys just took a chain saw to the outside leaves to make it perfectly round. This meyer lemon was about 18 to 20 ft high and 12 ft width. So dense on the inside, making it difficult to reach the fruit without getting scratched up. Maybe Judy has taken care of her trees and not getting an overgrowth on the inside. Each time you prune a citrus, the potential to get much more growth is expected. For every cut you could be looking at 5 new growths out of the cut branch. I say this to warn you to pick your branches strategically to prune. There is a way of reducing the new growth by rubbing off the little newly formed branches. Try to get them before they get too thick, avoid cutting them, this sends out growth hormone. Rubbing them off or pinching the sprouts tells the tree not to grow there.

CaseHeads G oh, thank you for this information. For some reason I thought I’m not supposed to fertilize too far into the summer. A local nursery looked at one of the leaves and they thought it was bugs, I have already sprayed it for bugs and thought it was ok. The nursery said I could just pull off the bad leaves, when I went to do that I realized so many are bad. The color is good but they look curled and mishapen. I don’t know if that’s how they looked before I sprayed it, or if more leaves keep getting attacked.

Ellen B it’s sounds like leaf miner common problem and good thing is they do more cosmetic damage then harm to the trees. I would email Charles a picture or two and look up leaf miner in citrus and see if that’s it. If you treat for them by next summer your tree will look great again with love and care. Cheers

Would a water shoot 32:00 be a good candidate for air layering? If so, can you air layer when it is in bloom?

GREAT Question Jacq!! Yes, water shoots would be great candidates for air layering because of the vigor in the branch, and because it's a young branch-- branches under 2 years are more likely to root than older branches. And, yes, you can air layer a blooming/ fruiting branch- but remove the fruit/ flowers once you sever the air layer from the parent plant. Also, spring, summer and early fall (during the growing season) is one of the BEST times for air layering plants & trees! Keep me posted on your propagation successes!!! Charles :-)

jacq danieles make sure you identify the sucker as the desired tree fruit and not a sucker from the root stock.

Hi Charles, I have used Neem oil on my citrus trees almost every week. But, the leaves continue curl from insects develop brown spot. On One of my lime trees, all the leaves totally dropped and now developed a new leaves, but they are curling too. What do you think is going on and a there more permanent fix versus weekly spraying? Hello Barry S. Some neem products are less effective than other neem products that are being sold-- variations on percent of neem in the product and/or how the neem was pressed (first press vs. cold pressed, etc)... and those variations in preparing the product result in varying degrees of success in pest management. Also, it would be advisable to mix up the pest control systems with other products, such as spinosad-based products-- that way you are attacking using oils & bacteria, both organic gardening pest controls. Also, try using IV Organic Ready-To-Use Spray that has diatomacious earth, garlic & cinnamon, to help repel pests as well! Another warning, be careful using oil on your plants, especially in the summer-- it can make a hot plant, very hot, even when applied the evening before. Consider following your oil pest management practice with IV Organic foliar spray the following morning, to keep the plant cooler to offset the added intensity of the suns rays on the oily leaves & stems. Barry S. Neem can cause the trees to be burned easier, what’s the reason to spray every week? Spraying the trees kills more good life than bad. Citrus attracts many beneficial insects that protect them and keep bad bugs in check.

CaseHeads G the reason I spray every week is because the leaves curl-up, there are some white spots under the leaves and some leaves partly turn brown. All the eaves on the lime tree dried off but new leaves developed. Now those. Leaves are curling up.

Barry S. Are your trees getting good deep waterings? You can check around your tress will probe of some sort rebar works or anything small. Stick it deep as u can by hand and pull it out see how deep the mud or wetness goes depending on soil type the depth you can push the probe can determine about how far water is reaching the holes can actually help water penetrate as well. Even potted trees can be under watered. Best way to a get good deep watering is turning hose on really slow depending on soil type and size of tree the amount of time can vary greatly using the probe can help the hose can be moved around making sure to get all of the rootball. Mulch is a must. Cheers

I’ve had my lemon tree for 1 year in a pot. I don’t know what age they are when they sell them. It has green lemons on it but am I supposed to cut them off because it is not likely 3 years old yet?

Hello Ellen B. Fruit on trees can take away from 20-80% (depending on the source) of the trees vigor & resources that would otherwise go toward growth & root development. If you are satisfied with the overall size, and growth rate-- then I would just enjoy the fruit your tree offers each year. Just keep in mind that the quality and performance will get better, and better each year! Charles :-)

IV Organic so don’t cut the lemons off? It’s my first lemon tree so I don’t know what satisfying looks like. I’d be very satisfied if the current lemons actually ripen. It seems like most of the branches on this tree fit the “sucker” description, even branches with fruit on them appear to be suckers.

Hello Rey! I just saw the original recording with 2 other people... the image lasts closer to 10 seconds on the original, but it's and airplane by all accounts. It starts off very shiny because of the suns reflection, then appears more clear as an airplane on the original footage. Amazing observation!!! Charles :-)

No problem with the magnificent in ground lemon tree which is the amazement of the neighborhood, and has had more than its share of “lemon thieves”. The problem is with a potted Meyers lemon and potted navel orange. Both trees were repotted this year, beautiful new leaves and flowers and buds. Then, fruit bud drop on both -tried Agri cloth to protect but still no more flowers and buds. What went wrong? and how to fix…..
