Pruning and Repotting My Willow Leaf Ficus, The Bonsai Zone, June 2023
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
My Ficus almost defoliated itself when I brought it outside for the summer.
I'm taking advantage of the leafless tree by pruning it up and repotting it.

Thanks so much Ronin!!
It's such a naturally beautifully formed tree Nigel, and as many noted here, we marvel at your bravery in some of those 'big cuts' you make. Thank you for lovely work on a lovely tree ...❤
Uh oh the zombie apoplectic is coming made me laugh. thanks for all your videos.

Glad you enjoyed it
I had sworn off ficus bonsai for years for a number of reasons. You've inspired me to try them again. I just bought a 11 inch tall willow leaf ficus in a 4 inch pot from a garden nursery store. Styling plan right now is "keep it alive". 😂😂 It'll get some root and branch pruning in a week or so.

Wonderful! Sometimes it takes a while to get the hang of growing some species!! I killed many, many Desert Rose before I had success!!!
Nigel I thought of you a lot today. I made your 3-ingredient soil recipe (safe-t-sorb, perlite, and reptile fir bark). I sifted it thoroughly. Then after a hard canopy and root prune, I repotted my 30 year old ginseng ficus bonsai. Your videos gave me the courage to do it! Your soil recipe has AWESOME drainage. I love it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Wonderful! I hope your trees does well, keep it well watered!!
This looks so extreme but I cant argue with your results, you have some very nice ficus bonsai!!
That tree is simple, but elegant! The leaves are so much smaller than they used to be!

YES! Zombie Apocalypse episode! I really wanna make a Bonsai Zone Bingo game, and fill the squares with different occurrences in the Bonsai Zone. In this episode, repotting a tree, Zombie Apocalypse, Red scissors, 3D printed pot, pot selection, potato/ bulbous root etc. ... COMING SOON! Also, what kind of animal combs roots from the outside in? That is an abomination lol 😂
I agree Nigel, and that new pot is YUMMY with this tree! Thank you for such a luxurious pruning and repotting video! Wonderful! Lisa

As you turned the ficus 360, I thought there were a couple of other possibilities for fronts toward the back and left side. What a tree! Looking forward to its development and what the future might suggest. Thank you. Here’s to rain and full collection containers 🌧️🌧️🌧️🤞🤞🤞Maybe someone could plan a picnic or a car wash fund raiser or outdoor wedding?!?😊

That just might work, we have a 94 percent chance of rain in a few hours!!
I'm a few videos behind, so I hope you've gotten your rain by now. We got 2.5 inches (6cm) down here in Missouri yesterday and today. I seem to have similar weather trends as you (just a bit warmer) so I bet you did!
Great video nigel! Thanks

Thanks, I find the playlist's handy too, it's good to see what you did and how the tree responded!!
What do you think of using a mesh screen for cooking to remove the particles from the rain water? Should catch it faster for you. Just a thought.

I'll try not to get bitten!!
Always enjoy your videos so much….just got one of these…question….why leave that bottom slim branch…seemed so out of place maybe?
How high would be the chances of the ficus to survive such a root-pruning? I'm still a bit afraid to cut too much 😅
@TheBonsaiZone

I am hoping it has a 100 percent chance of survival.....however time will tell!!!

Enjoyed the video Nigel. Thank you. I am a novice. I repotted my 3-year nursery stock Ficus Benjamina from nursery soil into equal parts akadama, leca and pumice. Repotting was done in September of the southern hemisphere spring. The roots developed well, but with sparse growth in the canopy. The tree was kept indoors. Could it be the incorrect soil mixture or should the tree be kept outdoors in our spring and summer? I am a novice

Usually Ficus trees explode in growth once adjusted to outdoor growing. It's best to slowly transition them to full sun over a few weeks and you'll find when it's hot and humid they grow 80 percent better than indoors!!!
I am a novice who lives in Central Florida. Do you prune as needed or only in spring? I have a ficus and willow leaf that need pruning. Also, when do you use moss with your bonsai? Thank you for all answers and information.
I want to see a pine with an ebihara nebari style root base on a portulacaria afra and a Japanese black pine. That is my target goal for one of my pines and one of my ports. I planted a port on a flat plastic thing and it so far has not liked it at all.
You talk about trees not looking good if they don't look like a tree in nature. you mentioned the proportions. I have to agree that the trees which are popular in China where the trunk taper is so exagerated that the trunk is nealy as wide at the ground as the tree is tall sometimes even wider. I personally think such trees are grotesque.

I think the more you stray from trees in nature, the more it becomes personal art, some will like it, others not so much. I prefer a more natural look if possible!!!
I think you have to cut the lower branch.
Hi Nigel. Where should I buy bonsai pots?
