Pruning a Gold Mop Cypress Shaping Evergreens Into a Tree. Pruning Evergreens & Topiary In My Garden
Lets prune some evergreens! In this video I reshape and prune my blue cypress topiary. I also show you how I shaped a gold mop cypress into a small multi trunk tree to give it a whole new look, and open up some planting space underneith. Pruning your gold mop cypress is a great way to size control it, and maintain the shrub in a way that it will continue to fit in your landscape. Have you pruned a shrub into a tree or topiary in your garden? Comment below! This is such a fun experiment, and who knows, you may just like the new form better than the original! Thanks for watching, Steph

Beautiful glod mop as a small tree❤
Your juniper & gold mop cypress are really looking good,Steph. Very humid here in Indiana but spending a sensible amount of time outdoors. Much cooler by Sunday so looking forward to a productive day. I think that was a good point you brought up about your gold mop cypress. Trimmed yet has a whispy look. Have a good day & thank you for your video!
Great idea. I was thinking of removing two false cypress that I have, but now want to turn them into trees.
It’s SO CUTE!!!😊 with the extra air circulation, I love seeing the breeze shake the “mop head”. I’ve found that many different varieties of woody shrubs do extremely well with a nice limbing up - like my Jim Dandy winterberry - before, the unassuming shaggy pollinator shrub hiding in the back bed - is now an adorable lil tree !

Hi there! I love these shrubs, and the way they move in the breeze. Oh how fun about the winterberry. I hope to add one to my garden at some point for the berries and winter interest. Good to know they are good pruning candidates. I now look at shrubs differently with how they can be shaped. So fun!
Great demo!
Thank you. I’ll try it. Yours looks so pretty.
Love the color on the gold mop Cypress and how you pruned it into a tree!

Hi Steph. This was an excellent tutorial. I love limbing up any large evergreen in my garden… I just never thought of limbing up my gold mophead. You did a great job! TY ❤
Great job on pruning the shrubs, I love 💕 the results , wish you would’ve shown more on the gold mop prune and not just the finished product as I have a few gold Mops also and in the future might need to do some pruning . For me that’s a nerve racking job😮

Hi Amy! I wish I had recorded it also. Unfortunately it was a year before when I wasn't making KZread Videos regularly. But if you start at the base, and go slowly and work your way upward (hope that makes sense) as you go through "limbing it upward", your going to have to remove ALOT of twiggy and woody growth along the way. My best tip is to go slowely and move branches by pulling them away so you can see what you can safely remove without mishaping the shrub. Then as you expose more of the "trunk" you can decide what shape your enjoying and what to keep and what to get rid of. Hope this helps.
I’m going to do this in front of my town home, there is an old mop that is so big it grew over the driveway and sidewalk! I cut the bottom half back but it looks mutilated as I wasn’t sure how it grew. Your pruning method will give it new life!

Hi there! Its fun, and why not? its a great thing to experiment with before considering having to remove the shrub. Slow and steady is the best way to go about it, making careful decisions about what to cut off. Have fun!

Living in Williamsburg Virginia, I think pruning here will be fine now. We usually have until December for a hard frost. Thanks for showing us this. I am going to do this to a couple of my evergreens and this gave me some confidence about it. Love what you did to the false cypress. The look is very oriental and showing the limbs gives it a very artsy appearance. Taking your time is vital.

Hi Maureen! Thats great, you still have some time! Have fun! Warning: it gets addicting! and yes absolutely take your time. Enjoy!
I want to do this for a couple of junipers I bought on clearance; I didn't realize they were different- one is a slow grower, Compact Andora (apparently turns plum in the winter! 😍) and the other is a Parsoni. The Andora will grow to around 2 ft and the Parsoni says up to 1.5 ft. tall. My search brings me to gardeners turning them into bonsais, but I want to turn the juniper that turns plum into a lovely focal point for winter.

Its fun to prune them and maintain a shape thats pleasing to you. I ended up experimenting with this shrub once it outgrew its space. I found that this topiary shape really helped keep it more compact for this space. The Andora Compact I believe gets that bronzy color in the colder months. Sounds pretty, enjoy!
Looks very nice!
What a wonderful idea. I'm going to walk around my garden tomorrow & see what I have to 'shape up'.

Hi there, I dint currently have one that needs limbing up, but I explained it here in the video. You will clean up all the extra foliage snd branches inside the shrubs. Then start deciding which branches you want to keep and work on pruning foliage up in those "branches". Hope this helps.

Hi! I have two 12 year old Cyprus and am considering taking them out. The. I came across this video! Would it be best to limb them up in the fall? Where do I begin cutting? 😂
Hello, What are those purple flowers called in your garden?
I have the opportunity to transplant 3 mature Gold Mop Cypress Shrubs from a neighbor who wants to start over. They are at least 4-5 ft. in height. I am pretty much a rookie on landscaping, Is this even.something I should consider doing? Any recommendations are welcome.
@HookedandRooted

Hi Jeff, I tried transplanting a gold mop cypress once, and it didn't do well. It ended up dying. It was so hard to dig out because the roots spread far and are very tough. I would say if you like them, then its best to just buy a smaller one and plant it where you would like. They are very fast growing. They are also easy to shape should you want to size control them. You could certainly try transplanting them by being sure to keep them well watered, plant them with a mix of native soil and compost, and if you have some available, a sprinkle of a start up fertilizer like Espoma bio tone. Hope this helps. Good luck! 🌱
