Just a clarification on the 58/15 S pickups. They are all LT regardless of whether they state it. I asked PRS about this and here is their reply: Thank you for contacting PRS Guitars. All the SE and S2 guitars which feature the covered 58/15 PRS pickups will be 58/15 LT "S." These pickups were formerly referred to as just the 58/15 "S" pickups, but we have since added the LT to clarify their resemblance in tone to the US-made 58/15 LT pickups. To clarify, all 58/15 "S" pickups use the Low-Turn spec, even if the description does not include LT. There may be some subtle differences in tone from one guitar to the next depending on things such as scale length, string gauge, density of wood, etc.

Funny how people's ears hear something different when there is a perceived difference... such as where a guitar is made. It's placebo. The two guitars may sound slightly different because of different woods, used, etc... but in this case... based on what PRS started the difference definitely didn't come down to the pickups...

I played both at my local shop, they’re both awesome but the value on the SE is just insane. It’s so good! It’s 80% of a core model and 95% of the S2. I really think PRS is going to have to start giving more comfort features in the S2 line if they want to keep it around. At least recess the electronics covers on the back!

I bought one Jon. I got the "vintage sunburst" double cutaway and it's stunning! The color looks more like an Iced Tea and is simply beautiful. I love the thicker neck too and I wish more builders offered that. Pickups are okay, but I want to eventually install some Ibanez Super `58s - my all-time favorite PAF style humbuckers. Your vid helped convince me to get it. Dang you - now I'm going to be watching out for one of the S2s that has a finish I can't resist!

First time I found this channel was when I was looking into Harley Benton Fusion guitar years ago. I liked video very much. Your playing is great. I am really a fan. Please do not understand that following is any critic as it is just a few information's I have had to give. I guess my OCD is killing me :) . I have tried not to post it, trust me :) It is quite possible issues I have are sort of slips and language issues while I am not a native speaker either and something's might have been lost in the translation. Point one. Those PRS SE 594, as well as most of the similar construction PRS SE guitars, do have real and thick maple tops. They are though plain maple and multi peace tops. Mostly 3 peace's tops but that can vary. Those multi peace tops then get thin layer of veneer glued on top of it. They are doing it to save on beautiful flamed maple. Instead of making one nice real flame maple top they can make 10 plus layers of veneer and cover 10 tops with it. That is also cost saving measure. It also allows them to hide the construction of the tops. Like they do not have to have symmetrical peace's of wood and joints can be at any given hight while in real two peace top joint must be in the middle and flames must be nicely book matched. This also allows them to use peace's of maple that have knots or other imperfections. Please note that good sounding guitar is good sounding guitar. Those sound good. They do have that typical maple top on mahogany back sound. So there is no material thickness issue where maple layer would be only as thick as the veneer applied on the top. S2 models come with two peace top that is real flame maple top. Savings on S2 models comparing to Core or higher level guitars is in the fact that S2 models get easier to make top carves. Core and higher models get harder to make violine carves that are actually in most of the cases less comfortable to play but way nicer to see. Also Core models and higher mostly get potentiometer knobs carves and most of the S2 models do not get that. Also S2 guitars get slightly lower graded flame tops than core or higher level PRS guitars. This is not true for LTD runs while those get core level flame maple to. Some other brands though use standard S2 level flame tops on their Custom Shop guitars. So level of flame maple on the S2 is pretty good to start with. From core guitar level you start getting 10 Top versions so they can go higher than normal guitars. Point two. Neck, on new day Cort built, SE guitars are multi peace. Mahogany part is 3 part neck not 2 peace neck as stated in the video. Plus they get two peace's for the headstock wings to make the width but that is often the case with most of the way more expensive guitars. In my experience way they are constructing 3 peace neck is superior to old fashion dovetail headstock and added thickness of the heel way. This construction makes very stable necks that can resonate great. Woodworkers will tell you that such construction is way more resistant to twisting of the wood that happens over time. They do it for the doors and tables where they cut boards in two or more peace's and change the direction of the grains and get counter twisting effect where each peace holds the other from twisting. Please note that that S2 are not one peace mahogany necks either. Saving to core and higher level PRS guitars is double. Every blank that would make single Core or higher neck is cut in half and used to make 2 S2 necks. For S2 guitars they take that thinner slab of wood and cut it under the angle and then rotate the peace to create the headstock and it's angle. This is not that bad either. Most of the neck is covered with the long part and some people claim that behind the nut (so headstock) makes no difference to the sound. I personally thing that everything matters but some things matter more and the other less. This one matter bit less than for example dove tail joint in my opinion. Though being what ever it is, that is the actual difference between SE, S2 and core necks. Please note that Korean, World Music Instruments build SE guitars with mahogany necks use to be one peace necks. I own 3 of those and I do adore them. Please note that lot of maple neck SE guitars have had this construction anyways. Even core models of John Mayer guitars are sort of dove tailed headstock guitars. Again people argue those are even stronger than one peace maple necks. Point three. I think they are already coming with 10's strings. Most of such PRS SE guitars (maple top, mahogany back) come with 10's. My all guitars came with D'addario XL strings. Not sure what comes on the S2 but on core and higher they use PRS strings that are also just another brand strings with PRS packaging. Point four. If your S2 is one of the 1000 peace's world wide 10th Anniversary 594 S2 that it comes with full fledged 58/15 LT pickups. All other S2 594, even other LTD models, come with 58/15 LT S pickups same as on the SE. Difference between Core and higher level guitars and S2 series is use of the import pickups. Not sure about electronics while I was never repairing any of the S2 guitars. This information about pickups comes from the PRS web page. Please note that your S2 and SE guitars do sound so different and one would think they have different pickups and they might have it. But also note that wood parts matter to. Also SE guitars get Korean pots and very shabby higher capacity cables and worse switches and input jacks. Capacitance does matter a lot. Liek I have said some models do have USA pickups and some people upgrade it as well despite that price of the 58/15 LT was crazy before they have started selling them and even now they are not that available and price is higher than many people expect for the pickup set. BTW 10th Anniversary guitar's were also more expensive. Additional info. Thin line S2 594 are actually SG construction guitars. Bodies do not have maple tops. To be honest, those sound great and might be cheapest version of great constructed guitar. They have more true features of 60's built SG than current SG Standard models. They are hidden gems. They do have brass studs and bridge saddles like originals use to have. Plus PRS two peace bridge is way more comfortable and lighter. They are very light weight to. They are 65% of the price of the LTD S2 models. USA build guitar that cost just bit more than top SE models. Hidden jams that can give you SG vibe sound and are very nice toi play. Comfortable and light.

The 2022 and earlier S2 McCarty 594 comes with a non-low-turn pickup...the new SE and the new S2 come with low turn pickups, so they shouldn't be brighter/brittle, they should be less powerful and more vintage sounding. The 10th anniversary S2 McCarty 594 in limited quantity of 1000 guitars, comes with the US version of the low-turn pickup as well as US wiring, like on the core model. Expect PRS to later issue the S2 McCarty's all with US wiring and low-turn pickups. Too many customers were complaining about the low quality pots and wiring in the US made S2 594. Thanks for the demo!

That is not the case. I contacted PRS for clarification. The 58/15 S pickups have always been low turn, they just didn't bother to say LT in the past. So there are not and never have been 58/15 pickups that were not LT. The pickups in the pre 2022 S2 594's are LT, they just didn't bother stating it. Any difference in sound is coming from differences in the guitar or slight manufacturing tolerance differences. Here is the reply I got from them: Thank you for contacting PRS Guitars. @@AndrewReynolds1I called them before buying my first S2 McCarty 594, and they said the pickups did not have the same specs as the "Core" model, but they had the "same voice". Sure enough, when I received it, the pickups were about 9K vs the roughly 7.5K core models. Resistance doesn't tell the whole story re output, but it does tell you everything you need to know about the amount of windings. The S2 McCarty were not the same spec.

IMHO, the PRS SE pickups have a consistent boost of upper mids, that you may interpret as harshness? I don't know, but playability and quality are stellar, sound is just lacking. That said, its a great platform! I think, your best option currently is to get standard, like a SE 245 on blowout sale, add a set of better pickups and you still will be below the price of the SE Mccarty :) At least, that's what I did. I would bet that guitar against any of my older core's and its just a fraction of the price.

Question Jon, The SE are listed as Multi-Ply Necks, Can you explain what this means? I thought this meant it was composite wood, glued together, but the internet keeps telling me that's wrong. I am told that Multi - ply bound together does not mean multiple pieces of plywood. That ijust means pieces of the same wood are glued together. This makes no sense to me, Also what does it mean for the SE guitars?

  • @YouTubeHandlesAreMoronic

OK, I think I've solved it. It appears that the S2 in this video is the same one that Jonathon demo'ed in a video a year ago, where he said it was a 2020 model. That means it would have had the 58/15 "S" pickups, not the Low Turn 58/15 LT "S" that are now shipping in the current models.

It’s scary how much of the character of my 594 is captured by that dual cut SE. Regarding to sound untrained ear could be fooled for sure. My 594 is a Wood Library 10 Top Quilted Maple Top McCarty burst model. Even neck mahogany has figuring. Gotta love SE guitars. Those have like 95 percent of the sound and 95 percent of playability of USA models. My 594 is work of art. It is literally perfection in every way. Workmanship and sound to. Though to appreciate it’s sound you need everything else to be on same high end level. I own 3 more PRS guitars and rest of them are SE guitars. All 4 sound great. All are very comfortable. Difference you get with high end model is weight, more detailed sonic picture, more sustain, different tones do not fight each other but ring together like n no other guitar in my 594, perfect parts especially plastic parts, feel of having something really special in your hands. SE feel like great guitars but my 594 feels like the perfection. My all SE guitars are highly modified. Mostly doubling their costs. Still extremely high value one gets when getting an SE guitar. One gets 95 percent of way more expensive guitar. In true PRS fashion even SE guitars are having great consistency. It’s almost impossible too get bad one. Awesome value. Though if you can try higher models to. They are awesome in their own way as well.

I do not get why you would care about writing on the back of the headstock. By PRS more it has there more worth it is. Look at the Private stock guitars. Full of signatures. On my 594 I have even requested one more signature and got it. Now I have the serial number, number 10 and Paul’s signature as well. Or maybe it’s because of the origin? Next to my Wood Library 594 I own 3 more PRS guitars. Those 3 are the SE guitars. Not bothered with their origin at all. Mine though are made in WMI. All one peace necks. One of them is my reference when talking about Les Paul sound. When I was buying few guitars I was taking my PRS SE Bernie Marsden MKII as reference. It sounded better than few Gibson Custom Shop guitars. Though all my SE guitars are highly modified. When I need Power Rock Les Paul sound but still with detailed sonic picture I use that guitar. When I want vintage first generation Les Paul sound I use my R7 Murphy Lab. When I want all in one guitar with high end sound I use my 594. All 3 do different jobs of Les Paul guitars. BTW only guitar that didn’t require any mods is my 594. Even my R7 needed modification. Just another example of Pauls genius.
