If your luthier is unsure how the bridge works on a PRS, run away with your PRS! The knife edges on the bridge plate can be ruined very easily.

Also, it's advised to remove at least one tremolo spring first to relieve some tension in order not to risk snapping the notched bridge screws.

I've seen some guys try to adjust the screws the way they do with a Strat.....the 4 in the middle backed off and the 2 on the ends screwed inward. Not good.

Always use something to keep the bridge secure when changing strings. Slide like a post it notepad the same width of the gap behind the bridge or what I use is a 3m rubber squeegee pad. Never adjust the bridge screws with tension. You can break the knife edge on the bridge and snap the screws. The bridge is pretty good from the box to float. Adjusting the saddles can be done at anytime..

Trems are the best, they float and are very smooth I love it so much. The nut is the only crappy thing on these guitars

Hi I'm looking to buy prs se custom 24... I have read that they have tunning problems. Whats your opinion on the subject? And what would you pick? Fender Player Stratocaster (SSS, SSH, HSH) vs PRS SE (Standard or Custom 24)

Well, the first thing is feel, which of those feel right to you and play the way you want. Lot's of entry level guitar need a bit of work, so this is no unusual, the fender could use work too. I personally am a fan of Alder so I know I could get a strat to sound the way I like. I also an a proponent of match pickup configs. I don't care for SSH. YOu get a huge gain drop when you switch to the neck and if you like to rip solo's it'll mess you up. SSS is cool, but less versatile over all, at least to me. Lots love it. I just like my humbuckers, so I like HH, or HSH for my style. With a bit of trickery, you can wire an HSH guitar to give you the same sounds as an SSS guitar, and some even have those tricks wired stock with push pull pots. I didn't spend a lot of time with the PRS, but I haven't played that much strat either.

@@DATT Yeah I just talked to the Big Kahuna of local Luthiers and he said that the nuts are his biggest complaint with PRS's and that they use junk nuts even on the USA models... And I said.. yeah why screw up a $3,000 instrument for want of a $7 part... We were in total agreement.. I am even at the point of why screw up a $900 instrument for a $7 part. Last night I was struming along and all of a sudden SOUR "G"rapes... Retuned. Pushed the string down above the nut and released... would not come back to "G"... was kindof G#'ish...

@@DATT Yeah well Jeff Chase in White Lake MI (has been working on guitars since the 70's) did the following. 1) Changed strings to Ernie Ball Slinky Hybrids 9-46. 2) Made a custom bone nut from scratch custom to the strings and the guitar 3) Leveled the frets 4) Smoothed over the fret ends 5) Dressed the finger board 6) Adjusted the machine heads 7) Adjusted the neck (truss rod) 8) Set the action height 9) Adjusted the pickup heights 10) Set the intonation... WOW.. What a difference... I have arthritis in my left thumb pretty bad so a super light action is really beneficial.... I just have to get used to it now.. Guitar stays in tune for way better... sounds better too... plays like BUTTER.... I am SO not worthy of this GORGEOUS instrument... BTW mine is Cherry Sunburst too... :o)

@@groovymoon Oh, it got the FULL treatment. I'm all about buying the cheaper guitar, that is solid, and upgrading it, to ultimately get something like a much more expensive guitar, but for less. I've always said "Gibsons are for people who don't know how to upgrade an Ibanez"

Before you do start with any nut widening... Why you not using Music Nomad Tune-It, String Instrument Lubricant at first? It worked for me perfect on many occasion and that's what is designed for 😉👌👍

Buddy uses fast fret to do that, not sure if it's the same effect at all. It this case that might have worked well, had he not wanted to use a significantly larger string gauge that the nut didn't really fit to begin with. Yeah, nut widening might be a bit much if you're using stock string sizes.

How do you play higher than normal notes on the first few frets on the 5th and 6th string. You are doing this at the end of the vid. Thanks.

Oh like when I do a bend at the same time and it goes "woo wooo". It's called "Pinch Harmonics". You do it with your picking hand. You graze the string with your thumb right after you've picked the note in one motion. Kind of a flick you do.

I kind of came up with it myself while trouble shooting tuning stability. I doubt it's an original idea, however.

the wraps are for downward pressure on the nut. no wraps equals less angle. more wraps equals more downward angle.

Admittedly, I wasn't familiar with that concept at the time. I was under the impression that the less wraps the better for tuning stability.

A cheap and effective improvement that PRS should make is to fit Graph Tech TUSQ nuts and roller saddles across the range. Sadly, PRS only fits locking tuners to the higher spec models.

As I understand this is a more entry level model, if they added those things, they'd have to jack the price. It's ok, I see guitars like this as a good canvas for upgrades. I'm all about upgrading a cheaper guitar over buying a more expensive one. You end up with something ultimately better in the end.

I have a 24 SE (same as one in this video) and yes... as I'm finding that another $50-100 in parts in the original build would have made ALL the difference in the world.. Better get my tools in line..

You should have put something under the back of that trem like cardboard to protect the finish. PRS give details on their site of what to do when working with their trem.

The tremolo system sucks anyway. I watched a video by PRS last night from the early 90s where PRS explained how well the guitar stays in tune by showing off the tremolo system. Guess what it didn't stay in tune at all and PRS brushed it off with a smile. PRS are nice looking guitars but the SE models SUCK. I have one and I struggle with setting it up to play as well as, say, a Charvel that's the same price as the PRS.

If no.locking tuner use the wrap under and over Joe Walsh winding method. Locks the strings no slips.

12s on a nut cut for 9s. No surprise you had to cut the nut to fit.

Don't really work on bicycles, I specialize more in electronics. Funny thing is, at some point I'll have a vid of me building a custom light for my bicycle. I figure, if you're "that good", you're better off working on guitars than bicycles.

It’s a SE. Either made in Indonesia or Korea. As far as imports go, they’re pretty good. A Core PRS it is not.

Yeah, it didn't seem like a bad guitar as all. A bit dark for me the way it got set up. But a good platform for a few upgrades. I always change pickups.

@@DATT I just put cobalt 8s on mine. Plays lovely, great tone, great clarity, very fluid to play. What I do is use machine oil (3 in 1) on the nut to stop any possibility of the strings sticking, and I can use the whammy bar all day long with not loss of tune. Doesnt have locking tuners, but I use the string locking technique by winding it back on itself. Never have tuning problems.

8s eh. I like to go as small as possible too. I run 9s but tuned standard D. So that's like 8s in E. I actually have one guit setup 9s tuned to B right now. It's pretty silly, but sounds nuts.

PRS Nuts are the worst! Strings should run through a slot OVER the nut, not thru such a deep valley perfect for pinching. What the point of all that extra material!?!? I’ve had 3 PRS guitars, but never settled with any of them. Just not very stable...

Well, PRS was more of a posh boutique brand. There was one guitar building, somewhat famous, described them as being guitars for doctors. I think if you want a PRS, you should probably be spending the several thousand to get the legit ones, cause yeah, it seems these entry level ones aren't up to standard.

What kind of messed up tuning is this - sounds like death.

I don't understand where PRS is going with these SE's. I literally bought one a week ago because its always said to have superior build quality compared to many other brands. I must say that the build quality is indeed amazing so I don't understand the logic of using such a cheap nut. I wouldn't mind paying $50 more for a much better nut. Honestly the worst nut I have ever seen on a guitar. Also ps: Just like anything mass produced today, the guitar won't really play well right out of the box, you need it to be set up.

Yeah it's weird, a posh name trying to offer a budget option, almost like they are so used to making expensive guitars they don't know how to make a cheap one. That $50 could break their target price range as they don't necessarily set the prices based on what they want to do as much as what they are trying to compete with.
