On September 30, 2022, during the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Ontario Heritage Trust - in partnership with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and Algoma University - unveiled an updated provincial plaque commemorating the history of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School.
This plaque was updated to correct misinformation regarding the purpose of the residential school system and to include the lived experiences of the Indigenous students who attended the school. The impact of residential schools is still felt by generations of Indigenous peoples today.
Commemorating these difficult stories through the Provincial Plaque Program is one of the ways that the Trust aims to provide an opportunity for all to learn and reflect about the full complexity of our shared heritage.
