Chickens have what is called a uropygial gland or preen gland. They use the oils secreted from that gland to waterproof their feathers and to keep their beaks and feet soft. As for the dust bath? That is to make their feathers less habitable to pests. Chickens can and will make their own dust baths, but you can encourage it to help keep your chickens pest free.

i love it!, its a good t-shirt ;)
we used to have a portion of sandy soil in our yard and the chickens loved to bathe in them
They are so cute
We had really sandy soil and my chicken would make these pits and roll around in them all the time

They probably loved it! Ours is clay 😅
My chickens are free roam and like to dig holes to roll around in XD

yes they do haha
When you’re so suburban you have to artificially make your dirt 😂😂😂
Awesome! Have a 2 year old bag of peat moss that's hard as a rock! Gonna put it in the chicken run and let the girls break it down! Win win!
My chickeny are self sufficient...they make their own dust bath..
Please use coco coir instead of peat moss. Peat moss harvesting is incredibly harmful to the environment. Coco coir is identical in its properties compared to peat moss but it isn’t as acid as peat moss is.

I’ve looked into coco it’s not identical. Has similar properties. It would probably be suitable for chickens. It may be more “sustainable” but takes significantly more resources to create and ship around the globe.
You just save me so much money!!!Thank you🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Aww the girls!
Gotta love those evolved T-rexes.
Me, living on a flat on a big city: *taking notes *
Cool video Peat Moss is an absolute badass oil absorber we used to use it on car fire scenes after the fire was out of course lol
Chickens are mobile plants, check!
Ditch the peralite it’s not digestible

They eat rocks for grit, I don’t think those are digestible either 🤷♂️

@@earthnailsandtails perlite is volcanic glass. I don't think I would want them eating glass.

I dont think its eating thats the problem more like inhaling glass
Instructions unclear planted a few chickens turned into eggs
Might I suggest trying something other than peat moss? Industrial Peat Moss harvesting of destroys peat bogs which are extremely important biomes for biodiversity and to lock away carbon
Excellent Mate😊. Aussie.
I let my chickens roam free in my backyard, and they love finding patches of dried dirt and rolling around in them
I use wood ash and DE and my girls love it.
Those are some happy chicks 🎉
He forgot the diatomaceous earth.
And that's how chicks are born. From the fertilized soil
They always did it in a sandy patch of our driveway and they liked it
Chickens are so cool 🐓
I need a dust bath
Chickens have what is called a uropygial gland or preen gland. They use the oils secreted from that gland to waterproof their feathers and to keep their beaks and feet soft. As for the dust bath? That is to make their feathers less habitable to pests. Chickens can and will make their own dust baths, but you can encourage it to help keep your chickens pest free.
They dig holes and don't need kitty boxes
Great video so when will I be invited to a chicken dinner, stop him up and I'll buy him to eat
An old tire filled with sand works great too, or just a big sand box for large groups.❤
Do not use pearlite like that. It is basically glass and is dangerous because it breaks down and will get inhaled by your chickens. What goes into lungs never comes out. That goes for all animals including humans .

Not to mention that birds don’t know not to eat it. Ducks and chickens will eat pearlite and other pieces of plastic garbage at any given opportunity.

I remember reading years ago that it's also carcinogenic.
my chicken loves sand, fine white sand
I think it’s the same ingredients as potting mix. Probably cheaper and easier to use that plus a little DE or wood ash. Great idea, I always see my birds love to bathe in my veggie beds.

It is potting mix essentially. I buy most of my stuff in bulk so it’s cheaper for me to make it
What do you do with the dust when they have used it? Do you throw it away or use it in your garden? Is it infinite use or do you change it out after a certain point?
There’s perlite in that soil, similar to the rock abstestos, just informing my you incase your chickens health suffers. Godspeed!
They literally use this as a back scratcher, not knowing why it works so long, but knowing that it does
Love this thank you for the info
I would always do good with an equivalent to a child’s sand box. At this point I would feed them well and let them decide which way they wanted to go. Without any coaxing them, they would definitely always pick the the winner but otherwise they would pick whichever was the closest to freedom.
Just like my chinchilla 😊 Although his is volcanic ash
You go boy❤
What type of chicken is that? I have one, and she's the most friendly chicken of the bunch.
Chickens are dinosaurs change my mind
i love chickens, but coyotes got all but two
