I love the grandpa’s chicken feeder that you recommended. Cut down on our feed waste going to mice. I also love the bucket lid trap. I put peanut butter on the inside side wall of the lid to trick them into trying out the flapping lid.

I use instant mashed potatoes bait stations. I also use baking soda and hot chocolate powder. Bucket traps with pearlite and a few sunflower seeds on top. There’s no shortage of eastern rat snakes too. In my house I have cats.

...snap traps aren't always quick. I had one that snapped in the middle of the house's spine. There was a sunburst of blood on the wall where it was, but no trap. Eventually found the trap, mouse still alive and in it, but it's spine was broken. Had to bring it out to the driveway and finish it with a shovel. It was still hopping with only it's front legs, trap dangling from it's mid-section.

Jonathan and Kylene: Replace the screen you have with a copper or stainless steel version. Many homes have been fitted with nylon mesh screens to make them less noticeable and easier to look through, but they are no match for birds with sharp claws or mice. I prefer the expensive traps that work by electrocution. They use either electricity or more common a large DC battery. They are common around grocery stores and restaurants. They work for both mice and rats. They are baited and when the rodent goes in to get the bait they are zapped and there is no danger of poisoning other animals. The downside is you still have to empty them into the trash.

You didn't mention the electric rat and mouse zappers. They operate on AA batteries. Their only drawback is it is one kill until you empty and reset. I like the drowning bucket method but only in certain areas like my tool shed, grain shed, tack room, etc. Not in my little house. There it is snap traps and electric zappers.

If you go around the home and close off all holes, that you don't know about, they really don't get in. I had rats and put steel wool around my bottom sink holes, the holes from the toilet hose and no one thinks about those spots, I have never had a rat in the house. Walk around your home and put steel wool in all holes, like air conditioner going to house.

I used the steel wool and it rusted away so now I use the copper and stainless chore boys. The mice won't chew through that either and it doesn't rust away. My neighbor is feeding cats and has about 50 and they are so well fed they aren't getting mice! I use a mouse trap that is similar to a clothes pin. They operate like the snap traps but you don't have to handle anything and all you have to do is press the ends. I think they are called "the better mouse trap".

I don't think I heard or saw the "Cat Box", a steel box with 2 one-way-doors, that you set on the floor against the wall. They walk in but cannot walk out - you decide if the mice inside go free or die (by dropping the Cat Box into a bucket of water). The box holds many mice and is more useful than one-hit traps.

Great video on an important but often overlooked topic! Thanks! Other issues with rodents... They can carry fleas, ticks and other pests. Also, all rodents gnaw because their front teeth continually grow. Which can affect things like wiring. Another food source can be the dropped seeds around bird feeders. Removing cover around your house that rodents can hide within can also help reduce their populations.

We have feral cats that run around the neighborhood. They seem to like our wood pile that’s up off the ground and covered. We’ve seen them trotting away with a mouse in their mouths. We also have our house foundation, window wells, windows, doors, and garage door sprayed 3 times a year. So far, so good 😊 The peppermint is a great idea, too. I’ll try that.

There is a channel, Shawn wood I think, and he covers every mouse trap known. Well worth the look. Also note that there are effective mouse repellents. Anything strong smelling is good. So, peppermint and cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, and any other strong smelling oils work. Also, dryer sheets, moth balls, etc all help repel them.

I have a question It's not quite related to the mice in this video but, it is about the desi packs. I get but you don't want to use oxygen absorbers with sugar and salt, but what about Desi packs? Also if using a Desi pack with sugar do you just put it in the 5 gallon bucket or do you actually put it in the sugar?

Under our addition, the contractor took out a basement window and he ran the heat piping out thru the window hole for the additions heat. How do you seal up a hole that is 2ft by 4ft with 2 big round heating pipes going thru it ? I have to put traps by it and when it rains a lot, I can count on having to replace the traps and adding more.

Well I will be the one oddball here. I've spent my life helping animals. We live in a very rural area. We're very clean. It's very rare that a mouse comes in our house. If it does, it's very simple. We use a have a heart trap. We catch the mouse and we take it down in some woods we know of when we release it. when you use poisons. Of course an owl can eat that mouse and then you're going to kill a beautiful owl. Glue traps are cruelty. There's no reason to kill everything you don't like or don't understand. We lived out here in a rural area for 30 years and I think we've seen two mice. Just how I run my house. Just one person's opinion
