Protestantism Refuted: Justification by Faith Alone? Seraphim + Jay Dyer (Half)

Seraphim Hamilton joins me to cover the exegetical questions around justification by faith alone, his debate with a recent reformed Calvinist, the issue of historical theology and created grace, Trent and the counter-reformation, the Augustinian problem (for Protestants - St. Augustine was not a Calvinist!) and the cosmic theology of Orthodox Ecumenical Councils, which also refutes Lutheran errors. Around 22:00 Jay explains something which is a MASSIVE a-ha moment for me: That the righteousness handed to us is a CREATED state, which is BOTH the RC AND the Protestant position. Like, the fact that God gave His only begotten Son (Jn 3,16) seems in this system to be a totally arbitrary and needless condition of our salvation, which it is. And it leads to the logical conclusion (whic turns anyone with sufficient IQ away from the faith) that God is just basically playing a stupid game with all of us and Jesus Christ makes zero sense whatsoever. At least this was my sense of the whole thing SINCE CHILDHOOD. It really bugged me on a purely intuitive level that I couldn't put my finger on, but of course, I knew that if I ever brought it up the (calvinist) adults would just give some illogical yet well-rehearsed explanation of justification, which made ME feel stupid, or more accurately, it made me feel like I had to believe in this bs system or else I didn't have faith. (because the Calvinist definition of faith I now assume is literally whether you have enough "faith" in the Calvinist dogma itself to believe in it, meanwhile straight up ignoring the fact that it is a bunch of mental gymnastics) And if a CHILD finds this stuff illogical, then who can still wander at the MASS APOSTASY currently going on in the West!? Also, who can blame the man who looks at this pseudo-religion and replies with a resounding "I'm outta here"? And lastly, who can doubt that all this heresy is pure SATAN? Like, just think of all the poor souls who abandon what little faith they had after going through Calvinist or Roman Catholic theogy (and I am not speaking hyperbole here, both are exceedingly common phenomena in my country) because of the sheer LACK OF VERACITY of both systems, based on this very presupposition Jay talks about here (at 22:00)! I am about to go into Catechesis, and BOY am I zealous, and I am actually in a righteous anger at these false shepherds who, in search of vain glory, invent these satanic heresies which lead MILLIONS into damnation. Jay and Seraphim, PRAISE GOD for every moment you are alive that you may do His righteous work (which is what you are doing without a doubt) and pray that His Holy Spirit continually keep your feet on that narrow path toward eternity. Kyrie Eleison! Christ is Risen! ✝️☦️✝️

But do you want to know O' foolish man that Faith without WORKS/DEEDS is Dead?... Was not Abraham our Father not JUSTIFIED by Works/Deeds when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see then that a man is JUSTIFIED by Works/Deeds and not by Faith only? Likewise, was not RAHAB, the Harlot was she JUSTIFIED by her Works/Deeds when she received the messengers and send them out in another way? For as the Body without the Spirit is Dead, so Faith without Works/Deeds is Dead also." 22. John 5:29... After being a well studied layman in Reformed Protestantism for 30 years, I would say that the biggest cobweb left over from it that’s taken me five years of looking at Orthodoxy to wipe out of my brain is the idea that God’s law demands 100% moral perfection, I am totally depraved and even my best works as a Christian are stained with sin, the only way God could be satisfied with me is if Christ obtained perfect righteousness in my place and imputed it to me legally. I’m finally seeing, if you take that lens away and just look at the context of justification as used in the New Testament and as it is taught in Orthodoxy… It is a fuller, richer doctrine of the Biblical teaching. Thanks, Jay, this was my biggest hurdle for the last five years.

It's very simple but also quite complicated. Only Jesus can save us, but He says Himself that we are judged on our works in the book of Revelations, and in the book of John, He says we need to believe in Him to be saved. But to believe in Him is not just knowing mentally the right things to think about Him, but to go and do what He commands. He commands a lot of things to be saves, Baptism in John 3, the Eucharist in John 6, to love and to forgive in other places, etc. So the simple answer is to love God and neighbor, but this also includes living a dynamic life in Him and in His church through the sacraments and a continued synergy and union with Him by treating all as if they are God, and loving God. The way we can grow closer to God is by obeying Him and through prayer especially, but also by being obedient to His church. So for example, when the church tells us to fast, we fast. There really is no simple answer, but I hope this helps.

Haleigh, this is the answer to your question. Do not let people here make it complicated. The Book of Acts 16: 29-34 The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved-you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God-he and his whole household. Now, to maintain your salvation, follow the words of the Lord. Also, notice how The apostles in the verses above spoke the WORD of the LORD to the people who wanted to be SAVED. And not some traditions from a church--- Protestant, Catholic, or Eastern orthodoxy. Follow his WORD. The cannon includes the old testament and the New Testament. The writing of the prophets and the apostles. So get a Bible following the Protestant cannon of Scripture. I will be praying for you 🙏.

@jacobmartinez5263 I do not follow those doctrines, and that is not what classical protestants claim. All i am saying is that spiritual matters are not simple. The appeal that Catholicism and Easter orthodoxy have for people is that they claim to have it all figured out. That brings a sense of comfort to people even though their models are incomplete as well. What I love about Protestants is that we acknowledge that we don't know everything and we attempt to come up with consistent and coherent models of spiritual truth. We are open to the exploration of people to see and develop models to best explain parts of the Bible. OP would call our differences as anarchy, but this perspective is incorrect. It is just Christians exploring different models to best explain objective spiritual truth, like scientists comes up with models to best explain natural phenomena, so do protestants come up with frameworks and models to understand spiritual phenomenon and interpretation. I should call in to Jay's live stream to explain this to him. This whole anarchy understanding is not correct. Protestantism allows the most freedom of spiritual exploration without anathematizing people.

My understanding of "Justification by Faith Alone (Sola Fide)" means thru the Grace of God, "FAITH" (not work) must come FIRST "alone" before "GOOD WORKS" (Charity of Love/Deeds) that are pleasing in the sight of God, begins/starts... It can not be WORK alone first before FAITH or both Faith and Work thru Grace justifies us at "the same time"... Our Faith Alone in God must come "FIRST" to each individual, then through our Faith in God... the FRUITS of Good Works (Charity of Love/Deeds) will manifest or reflect on us thru the grace of God in Christ Jesus as "EVIDENCE" to our Faith... Yes, it is true... the Bible said, "FAITH without WORK is a dead faith"... but it did not say,... "WORK without FAITH is a dead work."... Christ said, No works/deeds of man can be justified in the sight of God unless Faith thru Grace of God must come first to man... and that Faith is thru HIs Son, Christ Jesus... after that, our Charity of Love/Deeds begins/starts throughout our life in Christ and that is where our DEEDS will be judged by God on His Judgement Day (Rev. 20:12 / Roman 2:6/14:10-12)... Therefore, FAITH "alone" must come FIRST before Good Works (Charity of Love/Deeds) begins/starts for those who truly repented and believe in God... Can not be the other way around... Amen.

@@jvlp2046 work is an act. As in the book of Acts which can just as easily be titled the book of works. Work can be either a noun or a verb. Faith is the same thing as works therefore it can be a verb as easily as it can be considered a noun. We're speaking from the Greek into the English who cares if it's a verb or a noun.

The Bible narrated that Christ Jesus had done many things (TRADITIONS) that are not written down, but "THESE" are written down so that you may BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God... (John 20: 30-31/paraphrased)... What does the word "THESE" means?... it means ONLY those that Christ Jesus had done that God does allow to be written down have some needed IMPORTANCE in our Salvation... but those that Christ had done that God does not allow to be written down have no bearings (no importance) for us to BELIEVE, OBEY and IMPLEMENT towards our Salvation... Analogy... Just like ALL the VISIONS that Apostle John had seen but not all that was seen were asked by the Angel to be written down... (Rev. 10:4)... the same analogy... therefore, ANYTHING seen and done in the past that God does not allow to be written down, must not be implemented or believed... ONLY those that God allowed to be written down, logically speaking... Amen...

Orthodoxy, it's the Papacy it just changed the name to (oral traditon) biggest hypocritical redundant doctrine of demons. Your the biggest miss interpreting group of people there are. Predestination? That's not even close to being sin, it's wrong in your own opinion. Now, kissing dead saints hands? Confessing sins to a priest? Sola scriptura is wrong? Imagine.... hey look brother, it's Jesus coming for "the church" wait...... He's speaking. Well, he's all wrong, sola scriptura! Sola scriptura! Can you beleieve that! He actually thought His word alone could save us.

OK I had to end this with Christ relationship with the Torah. Christ does not have a relationship with the Torah. HE came ...everything else gets left behind.... it's now the 10 commandments. that's what you are to obey... not the Torah. And what we're talking about here is this is not restoring some kind of relationship. . Restoring creation - ?what is that. it's forgiveness ....your sins are forgiven . your original sin is forgiven in baptism. Your redemption is in His suffering and death on the cross you are now forgiven souls through confession to a priest....the only ones with that power.....and thereby worthy to be with the Lord. however you still have your life to live and you'd better be following those 10 commandments . you can acknowledge Jesus all you like but you'd better also be obeying His commandments. God in the form of flesh is not man...but God. God ..yesterday ...tomorro always and ever.

I don’t believe in denominations, Jesus said do not stop the people casting out demons in my name, whoever is not against us is for us. So denominations really fall apart if you take this scripture into account. How can there be one true denomination if Jesus said do not stop them? Jesus didn’t check their theology before letting them cast out devils in his name. There are many false interpretations and traditions, however our salvation comes through our belief and obedience to Christ and what he taught. Not what the churches teach. Luke 9 49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us. James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

We Orthodox do not believe in denominations, either! We believe God made ONE Church. The original Church made in 33AD by Christ Himself. Please, find the truth in Orthodoxy, my friend! God loves you! We welcome you! I used to be non-denominational and think denominations were silly, myself. If anything, Orthodoxy is pre-denominational. If Christ didn't 'do theology checks,' why did He warn us of false prophets who spoke falsehoods? Or why did St. Paul speak of wolves in sheep's clothing in the congregation? If our differences ultimately did not matter, Christianity would look VERY different than it has in the past.

My problem with Orthodoxy is that it is static and doesn't evangelize. Nearly all the people risking their lives preaching worldwide for the past 3 centuries have been Protestants.

So you judge by works 😉 Ubi Petrus channel has just released the first of three videos which cover Orthodox evangelisation. To your credit the protestants have been good at this work. But follow Ubis series on the subject to get a wider perspective. If you are sincere in your criticism you might want to consider doing that.

Many Orthodox evangelize a lot. There's great channels such as Jay's and Kabane's. We could do much better, admittedly. I think it's because there's a certain humbleness about Orthodoxy. Many of us strive to evangelize through how we live. I make the sign of the cross when out, and am happy to discuss my icon corner to those who are at my house. Also I am working on writing a book. We follow the Russian calendar and fast a lot, so those around me are aware we are Orthodox, but it doesn't always have to be pushy. If someone has questions about it, I am happy to evangelize.
