Protective Jack Russell Sends Bear Stumbling Back Into British Columbia Woods

As the old saying goes, it’s the size of the fight in the dog that counts. And one terrier in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, appears to be a fearless defender of his patch, no matter how big the intruder.

My JRT was the fiercest, funniest, most loyal bad ass dog around. She survived a bear attack!! She survived being chased by a pack of coyotes. She survived being surrounded by an elk herd. She was my first and only dog and lived to be 16 1/2. Its been 15 months (but who's counting)and I miss her more than the people I've ost. Sorry if that sounds disrespectful but it's true. Can't wait to see her again.

People can say what they want about the British but one thing I will say is that they knew how to breed amazing dogs and the best working dogs. Nearly all terrier breeds come from there in all shapes and sizes that can hunt and kill pretty much anything, then there’s hounds to sniff out prey and breeds designed to retrieve the prey. Bull Mastiffs as livestock guardians. Then you have the dogs like Border Collies for herding that are the most intelligent breed in the world that were bred there. If there’s something you need a dog to do, the British have made a breed for it that will do it better than anything else. I tend to buy American when it comes to most things but when it comes to dogs, I buy British.

That was a pretty funny drama to watch unfold. The dog was torn between barking at the bear and listening to the humans to come back to the house, while the bear was debating was almost... waiting for the dog to decide? The dog turned his back multiple times to the bear, which is really not the brightest thing for anything to do, but the bear also didn't leave or bite him when he did. LOL! I wouldn't have expected an encounter like this to go this way. That slip at the end by the bear was pretty funny too.

*Fun fact* Animals with front facing eyes, i.e predators don't know their own size. We look at a fellow human 10 feet away and if we hold our hands in front of our faces we can measure that person with our thumb and forefinger as being 3 inches tall. Of course we understand that they are not actually 3 inches tall, they are foreshortened. As humans we understand perspective... animals don't. So your small dog sees a bear that is - in his vision - very small.. In his own mind he is BIG and the bear is small. The bear had absolutely no idea how big your dog was. It's a hard concept to understand when this level of cognition is so natural for us, but to our four legged friends it's a minefield. This is why dogs will dip their heads to eachother a few times and then jump in unison, they do this to see who is the biggest

I dont think you understand how animal body language and perception of size relative to self works. This terrier telegraphed how little he was scared, meaning the bear was unsure. When the terrier goes on the offensive, the bear can tell if its bigger or smaller and flees because of the tenacity of the attack
