Protecting the Planet from Martian Microbes
NASA's Perseverance rover is actively searching for Martian life to bring back home. But given out track record of keeping things in quarantine, is that really a good idea? A (sortof) single-take exploration of aliens, astrobiology, and testing how many sci-fi movies references can I make in 8 minutes.

Bonus points if you can guess how many takes this took to film. Turns out that splitting it into three actually made it HARDER than the last time we tried this!

How about something in the classic kind... you know, how you learn about our roots. Something to expand the mind So what's your future, coding, programming, engineering, family business or perhaps a career in the space industry like we're watching here? There are 30 somethings working on this Rover project who charted their course when they were just kids. Have you charted yours? If not you are fu uh uh kkd and I see an orange apron in your future standing on concrete for 8 hours a day helping an old lady find a new handle for her toilet, cuz in this day and age there is no catching up. But brite side is you know how to mine craft and fangirl this pewdiepie which by the way the last I heard he is totally fash. Do your parents you're digesting neo Nazi content? And shouldn't you be in bed seeing how in the morning you have school

@@draroking Nah fam, they both got it from this guy en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Horkheimer Who first said it here... since 1976 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Gazers *Star Gazers* is a short astronomy show on American public television previously hosted by Jack Foley Horkheimer, executive director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium. First episode date: November 6, 1976 Theme song: Star Gazers Theme Song Network: PBS No. of episodes: 2,150+ Writers: Jack Horkheimer Music composed by: Claude Debussy ... The show has many catchphrases that viewers associate with Jack Horkheimer. Horkheimer's appearances on the show are always marked with his opening line, "Greetings, greetings, fellow star gazers!" and his signature closing line, "Keep looking up!" These are the most widely recognizable quotes from the show but there were also others in common usage throughout the series. Horkheimer used "So get thee outside..." to encourage viewers to watch the stars. When describing the heavens he would often say "Let me show you." When introducing a picture of the night sky, he would often say, "O.K., we've got our skies set up for..." and then add a date and time. ...] deGrasse Tyson, born in '58 prolly just gradded h.s. when those show first aired. You're able to piece all these cool bits of information together to form a story. I really enjoyed it.
There are still samples of some really nasty things like Smallpox in heavily secured lab environments; I imagine that containing martian microbes or other alien microbial life would have similar procedures to those samples.
Love the cinematography, those long sequences walking towards a moving camera. Very good execution and incrustations

This is honestly one of my favorite episodes you've put out, direct, easy to listen to, and great visual aids. The references to other events that have occured such as the garden, is seriously done well, as it doesn't break from the content and momentum of the video. 9/10
The production value is incredible! My favorite vid of yours so far!
I recall an Enterprise episode where the crew come across a silicon-based virus that starts killing two of the crew members. I (a chemistry graduate) spent most of the episode trying to cut the writers as much slack as possible as to where on earth those viruses were supposed to get the silicon they needed to replicate themselves. I would honestly love a truly oddball scifi series with stuff like this taken into account. Think: - Good newtonian physics. The Expanse and Babylon 5 show that this is viable for storytelling, and because it helps my suspension of disbelief - One or two alien races, each vastly unlike human forms (similar to the Revelation Space universe authored by Alastair Reynolds or Star Trek's Tholins) and none of that monoculture stuff that you see basically everywhere in scifi - If no aliens, then humans that have been incredibly genetically customised to their environment and are essentially different species

This incompatibility of alien and earth life is a major plot point in the later books of The Expanse: People starve on worlds filled with life, cause they cant digest any of the biochemicals in that biosphere, infections with alien microorganisms are not infection per se but just the alien enjoying the warm pool of salt water that is a human body etc

How about never putting the samples on Earth - send them to an orbital or moon-based lab instead.

I was thinking the same and it shouldn't be that hard. There are already plans for multiple space stations. It would be easy to isolate one. The challenge would be the timetable as for every new research technique a space station module needs to be designed, tested and launched, which takes ages, and of course the scientists, that would eventually need to come back, via multiple steps of isolation and monitoring.
@OurayTheOwl
3 жыл бұрын
The precautions would be the same regardless as the scientists interacting with the samples would likely want to return home at some point. Even if done remotely via robot the facility itself would need multiple layers of containment before even receiving the samples/new or updated equipment/repairs/supplies.
amazing video as always
Your content is really phenomenal, please keep it up! Out of curiosity, how many times, if any, do you stumble, trip, or fall while shooting these videos? I'm not sure if I'm more impressed by how good the videos are or by how well you walk/hike/climb and give a detailed scientific discussion at the same time!
