Protecting my Color pencil art with Varnish... How I've been doing it and Why!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What started off as a very successful experiment to stop some wax bloom in a sketchbook has turned into a mission to figure out how I can varnish my color pencil artworks with varnish. I have had many discussions with shops and framers to try and understand the best way of doing this, but I have found that many people just have never even considered the possibility, let alone figured out the best method to do it!!
After a LOT of trial and error, I have finally been getting some very nice results. So today I will talk you through how I have been varnishing my color pencil pieces.
I used Micador Gloss varnish ( available from my favorite online shop in Australia here: theartshop.com.au/micador-pict...) and National art materials Gloss varnish and I have achieved some nice results with these, however, these brands are not available widely.
With some research, it would seem that the Golden Archival Gloss varnish: amzn.to/2Qce8Wh
Has very similar properties to the varnish that I was using. A viewer has also suggested the Krylon UV Archival Varnish amzn.to/2wR7tJa, however, I have not had a chance to test these out for myself. (Amazon affiliate links are for your reference, I do encourage you to shop around)
Spray varnishes are a little tricky to have posted due to safety concerns so it may be best to speak to your local art store for a brand easily available in your location. Basically, you are looking for any removable spray varnish that is suitable for use over oil paint.
This is an activity best conducted outside or in an extremely well ventilated area. The fumes from artists varnishes are strong at the best of times, but when placed in an aerosol and unleashed into the air, they become a rather noxious cloud of headache-inducing nightmares. Please be careful when using these products and follow all the directions on the labels!!
If you are interested in creating a removable varnish using an isolating layer, the Brush and pencil final fixative is available here: (US) www.brushandpencil.com/Produc... or now through theartshop.com in Australia here: theartshop.com.au/brush-n-penc.... (Once again, as an aerosol product shipping can be tricky... if you're outside the US or Australia, you may need to find a local retailer who can ship you this product)
Please be aware that this process does have the possibility of ruining your hard work! I cannot stress highly enough how important it is to test out all materials and practice your technique on some test pieces before tackling an important piece!!
The Orchid piece is now available for sale in my Etsy store:www.etsy.com/au/CassandraHanl...
Once again I must say that I am still experimenting with this procedure!! While I have consulted many qualified professionals, it would seem that this is still somewhat new ground. If you have any questions or comments PLEASE leave a comment! I would love to hear your thoughts or concerns on this so I can investigate this procedure further!

    Modern Master? Please remember, if you ever plan on becoming a "modern master" (and who doesn't) varnish is extremely important for protecting a painting in public viewing and ensuring that maintenance can be performed by "art restorers". The restore process involves removing the varnish and replacing it when the varnish reaches the end of its usefulness. In colored pencil paintings, this is only possible if you used Brush and Pencil Final Fixative prior to application of varnish.

    This is exactly what I have been thinking about over the past few days. It is one thing to varnish for looks and for a little protection (which is what I've been doing) ...but what if somebody wants to restore a piece in the future? Rarely do artist ever think that their artwork may be of great importance or value once day, but you never really know. It sure would be nice for the buyer of a colour pencil piece to know their art will last for a very long time and can be restored if ever required. I think in the future I will be adding the final fixative before the varnish. That way my artwork can be pretty, protected and last even longer!

If you use an isolation coat before the varnish in future, I would love to see a video of the process.❤️ Thank you for sharing your techniques so generously and in detail. Amazing you were able to get further helpful information from Alyona Nickelsen, it is amazing how you can read some instructions for varnishing but without someone to show you such as in the video you can feel very lost, especially being new to creating artwork. I think a main reason to varnish or use a fixitive for my colored pencil work is to be able to get a good result in scanning it for stories ete and being able to keep it in good condition as more work is created.

Do I have to add Spray Varnish / Liquid Varnish afterwards or can I leave it with just the fixative spray? Or instead of fixative spray do I have to get gloss varnish spray or do both? I mainly want to protect my art from dust, UV light & smudging so would the fixative spray do this alone? Thankyou❤

  • @nauci

    Not sure how compatible it is with colored pencil and paper, but for my acrylic paintings, I use a few layers of permanent acrylic varnish to seal them in. Then I add a layer of soluble varnish that can be cleaned off and replaced on top of that. I personally use Liquitex (regular gloss and then Soluvar gloss varnish). The regular varnish I can use indoors without too much smell. Maybe it's best to use a fixative layer before the Liquitex though, even if it's meant to be permanent.

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    6 жыл бұрын

    +digital262 there are uv protective varnishes available (krylon is the one I hear of most often) which would offer some protection from fading... however uv protection in varnish can only do so much, and any pencils that where very fugitive (or very non-lightfast) would probably still fade eventually - just slower than they would have without the sunscreen!

    Hi Cassandra! Once again, thankyou for your videos! It's nice to see someone using products that are readily available in Australia! I'm just wondering about the liquid AS gloss varnish you're using as it says on the bottle that it's for acrylic paintings? Obviously (as you mentioned) coloured pencil is wax/oil based... Are you using it because you have sprayed with another spray varnish to isolate it first? Do you know if that will cause any archival issues?

  • @CassandraHanley

    @CassandraHanley

    6 жыл бұрын

    I had a lot of discussions with my local art shops about this!! They really don't label anything as colour pencil suitable so it took some digging. The art spectrum gloss varnish is suitable for oils ( and as the label states ALSO acrylics) It is solvent based as opposed to the water based acrylic only varnishes, which is why you need to isolate the painting first before you can just brush it on.

    Cool, thanks for that! I went to buy some of that gloss varnish for this purpose but I thought it said "for acrylic paintings" on the bottle! I didn't realise you can use it for oil paintings too, but after what you said, and a bit of research, turns out you can haha I shall go back and get some of that then! I actually sprayed the final fixative as the isolating layer (like you mentioned about Alyona's response) and I'm going to wait two weeks then probably still do a few layers of gloss spray varnish before a layer of the liquid varnish (just to make sure!) Thanks for doing all the research for this, I can't wait to see what the coloured pencil pieces look like when they're glossy like a painting! Exciting times haha

    Just make sure that first spray layer is very light and fully dry as it will break down your pencil, and there is a risk of smudging. Once you have a good layer down, you can use brush on varnishes

    Very helpful tutorial. I would just perhaps suggest to go easier on your coffee intake, darling!
