Protect and Survive || The Cold War Nuclear Survival Guide

This week Paul is talking about "Protect and Survive". The booklets and a public information series produced by the UK government during the late 1970s and early 1980s, dealing with civil defence preparations in the home in case of nuclear attack.
The advice included the recognition of attack warning, fallout warning, and all-clear signals, the preparation of a home "fallout room" and the stockpiling of food, water, and other emergency supplies. 'Protect and Survive' was simply designed, easy to understand, and mercilessly mocked both then and ever since.
The 'Protect and Survive' animated series was produced by Richard Taylor Cartoons, who also gave us the well-known 'Charley Says' series.
The clips shown in the video are shown subject to Crown Copyright and with thanks to the National Archives.

I have a copy of the protect and survive it's a reprint I bought it from the cold war museum at RAF Cosford. It is an extremely terrifying but interesting read.

I must have just missed out on these videos or have been too young at the time to remember anything that might have been shown. I do recall a few tales from my dad who was serving in the RAF at the time, about how there where individual/single person bunkers scattered across the base/air field with at least a few days worth of food, there specifically for the person on duty at that time if bombs where dropped. To be told as a young man with a new wife and child, (before he and my mum met) that if bombs did drop, when he came out of that bunker he was not to check on loved ones or family because they'd likely be dead must have been awful. He was essentially there to help clean up the and 'get the country back on it's feet' in the aftermath of such an attack and I always got the distinct I that they where not expecting many civilian survivors.

That's fascinating. Do you know which airfield he was stationed at?

Great video. I'm a couple of years older than you and was utterly terrified by all of this stuff (and Threads, The Day After etc.). And yet, when I was at school I thought the CND types were "loonies". That the government would "defend us". Then I grew up....

Thanks, we're really glad you enjoyed it. Once the lockdown is done and we're allowed out we'll be heading back to Hack Green to do a piece on how the 'government' thought it would work after the bomb went off.
