This guide has been one of the best I've watched for TBC Prot Paladin. I loved the context given for each point

As a person who is wanting to main a pally in TBC and go prot for PvE and ret PvP this guide helped out so much, rather than other guides it's straight to the point, simple, effective and very knowledgeable. Super underrated guide. Sub from me!

Block value shines as a tertiary stat when you get like 700-800 accrued it really helps tanking big raid packs. I do agree, aggressively gearing for it is not a good idea. Most of the time we just want either high EHP or high threat.

Week 1/2 and Pre-raid BIS links doesn't work anymore.

I wanna say this again for anyone thinking about professions: I played mostly Ret paladin while leveling and almost didn't use any item made from blacksmithing (mostly only the whetstones and the fel shieldspike as the other spike recepies are too hard to get) jewelcrafting gets you alot more fun and useful stuff while lvling and alot of engame gold enchanting is always great to have in a group (/guild) ,you can make more money farming things like stratholme and get that extra Spellpower which is bis even engeneering is better bc you have grenade pulls, rep bots, mote extractor and smoke marks for raid

So a question about Concentrate And stepping into her relics do you need to be Mitigation kept before you step in? Because I'm past the crush cap my defenses about at 5:00 something of this point My health is only about just shy of 10K. MI spell power on buffed is about 2:17. Add is for my mitigation it's about My doges 16.47 Perry 15.47 Block 13.37 I don't think those are the exact but that's what I think I'm about at. Am I health is 9947 Again I'm not 100% sure but this is a rough estimate about where I meant I've only done 2 heroics are king crips and I tried ramparts but. What was happening was we about God to the last boss and obviously on the poll. If I can I'll do avenger's shield but I didn't have time so I just took with judgment. And I would concentrate in it would be fine I would hold of for a little bit because obviously this is heroic. Now I normally use rank one of concentrate only use Max rank when I really have to you because well. And obviously taunt and holy shield on cooldown But what would happen I would seem to have threat on him and then it was like he would just agora wipe and just run over to the healer end of my taunts on cool down I can't pull him off him. So my question is I tried upgrading to rank to by default which seemed to help a little bed but then when I tried Max content crade it helped a little bit but then he would just pull right back off me. Now granted I don't know what type of gear my DPS were wearing I don't know if it's because they had better gear then I did so I didn't have a spell power to hold I don't know. I've always been told by default you should be about 2:00 estimate lii 3:00 at the absolute Max a spell power to take heroics average. So I'm asking Is that fact or Now I will admit I did you seal of vengeance but up until recently it was my understanding that it did better threat than righteousness. But thanks your tip I'm going to start using work righteousness instead of vengeance now my get other question is what's long? I mean is 4 to 5 minutes long were I'm gonna get that 5 stack because this is heroic a mean Sally gets gonna die in one. So that's kind of my question on that anyway then give her the video and thank you for the advice

The reasoning regarding block value is off. It's more desirable for warriors because shield slam's threat scales with it, not because warriors block more than paladins. Once you're crush immune as a prot paladin, which is way earlier than for a warrior, you will block every hit that comes through. Block value, while still not particularly great, is the only way besides bonus armor to smooth out spiky damage. That being said, there's no way in tbc to break 1000 block value, even if you primarily gear for it (which you don't). In reality, you will have about 300-400 block value while taking 3-6k hits. Adding another 50 block value over 1% dodge or a couple of hundred HP isn't worth it in the grand scheme of things.

great informative video. Looking to go prot for TBC as i was holy the first time round. When this Pre-Patch hit/entering the dark portal, will i be able to tank dungeons effectively without any raid gear?

I would look to gather some of the Soulforge (upgraded paladin dungeon set) and maybe try get into some AQ20/ZG. There are loads of fantastic items in there. You'll be fine if you take it slow but you won't be able to pull multiple packs

Dwarf, blood elves and Humans are fine just pick which you like. Okay I'll go Draenei.

Should I be using plate armor with stamina + strength or stamina + intellect?

I wouldn't put Dabiri's Enigma (on use block rating) in my pre-raid BiS list because you'll be crush immune before stepping foot in karazhan, thus wasting any additional block chance. Also, for the very same reason, you will replace Libram of Repentance at some point, because there's no gain in having more block chance once you're crush immune anyway.

@@LowExpectations it's certainly a strong combo very early on or if you build a spell power farming set with very little avoidance and block. Just keep in mind that the amount of block required depends heavily on the enemy's level.

Really good video man. I agree 100% with you. I raided endless too. The only thing I still find difficult is deciding when to judge wisdom or crusader.... on raid bosses, I judge righteousness 1st, start building vengeance stacks then judge crusader/wisdom and swap back to vengeance as long as stacks are still up, what do you do?

Coming in from classic tanking naxx on my prot pally so tbc sure will be great when I get a talent tree that makes sense and a taunt! I am wondering is it possible to get defense cap without having to spend a lot of points in anticipation? Also how long do you reckon I can stick with Thunderfury?

Defense cap is extremely easy to get without Anticipation once you get into tier5+. You can in pre-raid/T4 but it normally requires you to gem defense or use trinkets with it on. Which there aren't many that are good for tanking raid boss as they're normally centred around avoidence on-use, which I personally don't like as it makes you a spikey tank to heal. I'd sooner take Anticipation and use a spellpower trinket+styleens. Like Serpent or 41 badges trinket, or find other ways to use the Anticipation leeway. Remember that Anticipation isn't defense rating it's flat defense. This make it way stronger than it first seems as you'll need far more than 20 defense rating to cover it. Hope this helped!

Thundurfury can be replaced as soon as you find literally any spell damage mace in prepatch, at level 60 lokamir will produce more threat than thunderfury. Ring of Blood in Nagrand will give you a healing mace that gives 54 spell dmg... even that thing will be higher threat than thunderfury. There is also an even easier early on quest in terrokar forest to kill a big spider, terokkarantula, that's available at 63, and is 50 spell dmg, and that would also be better. The proc on thunderfury is zero threat in 2.0, so essentially you're just swinging it for the thunderclap effect, which is fine, but it's a very low threat weapon.

@@lolpaladins the procc isn't 0 threat lol it has to be atleast 300 cauz you do 300 dmg. The aoe effect might be nerfed.

@@lumpydark6173 and a 50 spell damage weapon will end up putting out 300 threat every 5 seconds or so. Just from the bigger JoR/Consecration/Holy Shields. By the time we're talking about the prebis 120 spell dmg weapons, they're starting to blow away the thunderfury proc.

But... if you're keeping holy shield up as much as possible, why wouldn't you get more blockvalue? I get that spelldmg is much more of a gem/enchant thing on your gear but... you even highlighted trinkets that exclusively boosts your blocking...

It's just an action bar. My cheat way of doing the normal WA look. Then I can drag and drop abilities I want to track on the fly :D

The reason block value sucks is not because you block less as prot pal (a lot of the time you'll be blocking more) it's because anything past normal dungeon content, you'll be getting hit for 2-3k swings (Even... especially heroics). Having an extra 50 block value isn't going to do much; Same goes for warriors. The reason a warrior miiight want block value over a prot pally, is because shield slam (their highest threat ability) scales only off block value. Even then, Heroic strike and devistate is the majority of threat building for warrior, so block value is basically just garbo.

Really sorry for the late reply. Mad time IRL. They're just an action bar, then I just switch the spells on them depending what I want to track!

I still can't decide if i should roll Prot War or Pally.. I'm afraid of the gear dependency and mana problems of Paladin. I always played Paladin on wotlk/cata so, totally different class if compared to vanilla/tbc. With war. I only played War on BfA, and a dps, i heard that prot warriors can struggle with keeping agro on multiple mobs. ._.

For me I love being the utility tank as well. Provide buffs, BOPs and able to even Blessing of Sacrifice the tank if we have the spare blessing. Ontop of that you're able to bubble of nasty debuffs and taunt at range. Prot warrior are still great. They do struggle early on, but they become monsters in last tier 5/6. TBC vs Wrath/Cata is very different I agree. I really love the seal twisting which gets removed in Wrath. If classic goes to Wrath I don't think I'll stick to Paladin personally!

Dungeon tanking in my opinion is far easier as a Paladin in TBC, Wrath is a different stroy... #Shockwave, but back to TBC as long as people can wait a few seconds your aoe threat is great, simple and effective. Outside of that you bring an adaptive buff that can be changed depending on the class (blessings) and then the ability to save someones life with BoP if they go a little crazy. However I am a prot paladin main and probably a bit biased!

Looks like your 70upgrades sets arent working?

Anyone got a holy shield macro that will cast rank 2 if rank 3 can’t be cast would be super convenient

If you're already at low mana. Then you should start down ranking way before you hit sub 10%

I prefer Aldor, mainly because the chest from revered early on is insane! But as you scale the scryer enchant does become better in later tier as you do not need the bonus defense from the aldor one! As I'll be looking to get into kara early I'll probably go with Scryer but that's because I'm lootmaster/MT :D

Popping everything right off the bat is not optimal.you want to wait until you five stacked vengeance and or heroism or bloodlust.

You forgot to mention that in TBC classic being uncrushable in T4 content is not a requirement.

You don't want uncrushable in tier 4? Once you get your libram for 15 BoJ it's quite easy to achieve and every boss in teir 4 Crushes. There are bosses in T5+ that don't crush, but none in tier 4 to my knowledge

Ive seen prot paladins get crushed and fucked on the beta (by gruul, not the hateful) so i would think we should still be shooting for it

Sorry, you're just flat out wrong about block value. It's a really great stat for prot paladin tanking. A lot of things that we will be tanking, in raids, especially in hyjal and zul'aman will rely on having decent block value and high block rating.

As I said within the video. During AOE situations block values goes up, you know the two situation you just pointed out. However in single target encounters it plummits in favor of stamina. Put a little bit of time into researching Endless top guilds. You'll see exactly how experienced TBC paladins gear their Paladins for progress. Not to mention this content is buffed in comparrison to TBC classic. Thus the need for defensive stats will drop even more.

@@LowExpectations I don't need to "research endless guilds", I played retail tbc as a raiding paladin in sunwell so I can give you advice from my own firsthand experience including tanking in sunwell or doing bear runs. Endless had at one point (probably still has, but idk I haven't played there in months) a bug with their damage calculation that caused block to be applied before armor mitigation, essentially making it impossible to block 100% of an attack. In retail/classic tbc BV is applied after the armor % reduction. It makes the value of block go up considerably obviously. Dr Kael gave out the equally bad advice on his own videos, not because I think he's a bad player, but because the server he has experience on is giving him poor information to work with. Yes, for typical 2.0 swing speed high damage boss tanking the stam stack on high armor gear is going to be great (when you aren't having the bear druid in your guild tank that particular fight anyway, like felmyst or brutallus it's honestly just better to let the bear tank if you have one), but equally valid is going to be slapping on that BV set for the many, many, fights where we will be expected tank adds, such as alar or hyjal or the fast-atk dual wielding mobs that hit in the 2000 or so damage range. It's not the end-all-be-all stat, but for example on alar or in hyjal I think you should be aiming for 600 or so. Not a stat to ignore, and you should be seeking out and building a set of gear specifically to put it on in those situations, no differently than how you should be ready to build a set of shadow resist gear or nature resist gear or healing gear for when you aren't tanking. A tank that doesn't have an offspec set is going to struggle when he's not tanking. Similarly a tank that doesn't have a block value set is going to struggle when tanking multiple mobs or fast attack bosses.

Which forum thread are you looking at. That is THE protection paladin thread for TBC.
