What would you use to float clay off of a resin life cast?
Why did you paint on the armature with same color of the wax clay? is there any reason or what else?
From what material is this headcast made of? resin?

All he had to do was wiggle it back and forth a bit. Maybe put it back under water and use the blade to gently lift up the edges, and he probably could've gotten the head piece off without cutting it.
