Prosperity on the Mississippi, Now Forgotten to History | Natchez, MS

Mississippi is another example of a southern state which gets bad press. Whether this reputation is rooted in truth or not is irrelevant for us on the Coverage Project. It's my obligation to see what the Magnolia State offers, on the ground with my own eyes, and share with you all. So unfortunately for all the naysayers and dismissive travel snobs, their opinions will be ignored during our Southeast Tour, for we'll be giving this state a fair chance any other. Right along the mighty Mississippi River, lies a small city which used to hold tremendous importance for the south. Once among the wealthiest cities in the country, it is now a forgotten shadow of what it used to be. Let alone being a popular area to inhabit for centuries before the arrival of Europeans, the city of Natchez shined through the first half of American history, being at the forefront of 19th century riverboat commerce. Largely spared the irrecoverable damage dealt by the Union to other cities along during the Civil War, the city prospered into the turn of the 1900's, and today is home to the one of the greatest remaining collections of antebellum homes and architecture. However not all things last forever and this also was the case for Natchez, as its steamboat-trading eventually became less efficient compared to newer modes of commercial transportation, losing out on any future opportunities. Lost to time, this once-powerful little city is now ours to learn about and understand, the debut into our 26th state.

I definitely will visit these forgotten mounds. Speaking of forgotten things, its interesting when talking about the power and economic wealth of southern cities, slavery and the trade of humans is often ommitted!

The mounds are a cool wonder which brings a nice introduction to the day, perhaps a fun morning activity before heading into the city. As for your next point.... well naturally, this goes without saying. It's such an obvious truth with that I don't think it's worth it to "poke the stick" further with my own commentary concerning it. I try to be a "glass-half-full" type of person so I aim more to tread lightly on controversial subjects on my channel, especially on topics I feel can be better analyzed by those who are more interested, better informed, and specialized in delving into more nefarious historical events. However, if we're to talk about the historical context, I don't know if there has been one big or affluent city throughout history that became successful through 100% pure, innocent means. That's just an unfortunate truth of human society. Whether it's slave labor, corruption, human rights abuses, it's been a ubiquitous part of the human story, today as well as in the past, all around the world. I don't believe the issue of slavery is omitted out of the desire for a purposely ignorant perspective. Rather, if this was a set of circumstances unique to the US or the American South, then perhaps I would be making a bigger deal out of it in this video and other videos where appropriate.
