If you turn the temperature down on the water heater while on vacation a bacteria can grow in it. This happened to my mother. She returned from vacation, turned the water heater back up and showered once the water was warm and contacted Legionnaires Disease causing a hospital stay. The bacteria and water droplets enter your lungs as you shower.

This was informative. I just had a water softener installed today. They put 3 bags of salt in but the water is 8" above the salt. Am I correct that I should add more salt so that there isn't so much water above it?

How do you remove salt to see if you have a bridge? And what do you do to the bridge if you have one?

Spray a small amount of water over the bridged salt and poke at it with something like a broom stick to break it up.

I was told by our service tech that nobody uses potassium because it's become WAY too expensive. It was too expensive 10 years ago when I was using it. I switched to salt.

Pls help! Is 2 bags a month normal? Or is that too much? I also see water being black. On 4/9 I added 1 bag. Typically I add 2 but being that it was kinda full I only added 1. But on 5/11, I ended up adding 3 bags. Then on 6/2 I added 2 bags & on 6/18 today I had to add 2 more bags! The tank is always a little less than half or like today it was half ( water always 6 inches from salt). We did have irrigation repairs around April but I’ve noticed the tank has been decreasing faster. I know it could maybe be the water usage being that it’s summer but could there be a problem somewhere? Maybe a leak? Or am I putting too much salt? I live in Nevada by the way. The water here is very bad. Pls help!

OH crap. I filled mine all the way to the top months ago. Today I had only three bags left and filled it halfway. I had thought that was about right, but decided to look it up. I have to do this every month? So in another month, I should put only 2 bags in? Does it matter that the water is particularly hot (a husband thing: he likes near-boiling water): I was afraid I'd have to fill it more often. I was about to hire a handyman to do the whole thing because I have to drag that bag to the filter, lift it, then I stab the bag to let the pellets drop in. The first time, I gently unopened the bag and tried lifting it and that was a mistake, so I went Rambo on the bag and that worked fine. I'm 90lbs don't judge 😂

So if you keep your brine tank low (not empty with salt) that will affect the ability for the water softener to regen is that correct? (example is I have maybe 2 inches of salt in the bottom and the water level is maybe 8 inches). That's too low? I have been having issues with white residue all over my home from shower heads, to snks, dishes, and the water dispener in the fridge.

I moved into a house with a softner system and bought one 40 lbs bag of Morton Pure and Natural crystals. They are smaller than the salt chunks in the video and seem to dissolve fast. Anyways, according to the bag, its says for a family of 4 add 3 bags every two months and family of 6 add 4 bags every two months. Thats a lot of salt and will be way above the water line.. am I missing something? How often do I need to check the salt? I did not add enough the first time and after a few days all the salt was dissolved so did not see any salt and added some more but was always below the line, and when I checked again.. same thing, all the salt was dissolved

The water in my brine well in my salt tank is dark. I asked my filter installer if this was ok and he said yes, however I’m suspicious of what I’m seeing. I’ve never paid attention to it before and my system is just under 5 years old. I have a chlorinator, carbon filter, and soft water system.

It should be cleaned out annually. When it gets close to when you want to clean it out don't keep adding salt just let what's remaining in the tank dissolve. Using a mop or car/RV extendable soft cleaning brush to wipe/clean out the tank. I use a shop vac that can vacuum up liquids/water to remove the water used in the cleaning. Fill the tank back up with new salt pellets.

Ionic exchange of calcium (hardness) for sodium within a bed (tank) of resin coated beads. The brine (salt water) is used to clean (regenerate) the resin beads once they are depleted from use.
