Pros Cons of Iceland Summer Travel

In this video I discuss the pros and cons of summer in Iceland if you’re considering a trip during June, July or August. Summer in Iceland means everything is green, waterfalls are gushing, sheep are roaming the land, and whale watching tours are in full swing. Obviously summer is a popular time to visit Iceland…But is it the BEST time to visit?

I was to fly out tonight for Iceland but the air strike has caused us to cancel our plans yesterday. I’m so sad!!! I hope I can visit next year! Thanks for all the great info!

My sis and I went to Iceland in Sept 2023 … the weather was perfect for tourists (we are Aussies who can handle hot and cold weather equally) … absolutely loved it … definitely didn’t feel too crowded wherever we went … would go back every year if we could!

I lived there as a kid for 3 years in the early 70s and there was absolutely no tourism. We went this past May and all I could remember was being at the water falls and we were the only ones there. No parking lots, no paths created (you found your own, etc

We came to escape the heat of South Carolina and the crowds of 4th of July in our area a couple years ago. Little did I know that the first Friday of July (I think?) is a big holiday there. I was so lucky to find a new AirBnB with a lovely woman who decided to rent out her whole place while she stayed at a friends house sitting for him. It was in Selfoss and the cleanest place I have ever stayed. Yes there were crowds - but not everywhere. And we expected it - I think that is the main thing when dealing with crowds is managing your expectations and planning to do what you’re comfortable with. There were many places we went that weren’t crowded and if we had wanted we probably could have avoided all crowds by going to the northwest area vs the golden circle. This is the one time I bought an e-guide and anyone reading this comment - her e-guides are worth it! Especially when you are driving around and cell phone service sucks but you still know where to go and do because you downloaded the maps and her guide ahead of time!

And the daylight thing is so crazy. It screws with me so much - I have to make myself go to bed - same thing happened when we visited Normandy too. I have to make myself go to bed because I just don’t feel tired!

We will be there in mid August and know you will arrange wonderful weather for each of us. We were blessed on our last trip with fine to lovely weather (with a bit of interspersed rain and WIND) and looking forward to this trip.

Even in May it was pretty crowded in popular places. We spent most of our time in places like Westfjords. I can’t deal with crowds and I’d rather dress warmer than stand elbow to elbow with folks whose only goal for travel is snapping photos.

Great video! It's crazy to see the overall increase in tourism and infrastructure to accommodate it. It's really going to be nuts during the 2026 eclipse.

Thank you for this video! Very informative. My husband and I visited last October. There were some storms but crowds were less. We want to visit again next year. Seeing the Puffins is a must but we don't want the crowds. What are your thoughts about April or May?

Hey Friend, I can tell you summers in South Asia are always hot and they have been getting hotter since the 90s. Right now, it's 9:25 p.m. and the temperature is 34 Celcius; in the day it's over 44 Celcius. I guess it's better in Iceland. Honestly, I am single and quite open to start my life as a family! I definitely need prayers for everyone as I have been through a lot since I was a child or you can say from the start and now I am 35 years old and feeling the loneliness even more. Can you tell us that is the volcanic erruption is causing any serious issues or not? Thanks and Take Care My Friend God Bless You All. Amen.

Wow I feel pretty fortunate! I just spent 2 weeks in Iceland with 2 of my daughters (we returned to the US last night) and we planned this trip just 2 months ago. I easily found 2 wonderful AirBnBs, the crowds didn't seem bad at all, and we found tours and experiences without a problem. The airport yesterday, however, is another story lol! It was wall-to-wall people and our gate wasn't announced until 10 minutes before boarding. Then it was a mad dash to literally push our way through packs of people to get to the gate! It seemed the airport hasn't caught up to the increase in tourism and to its becoming a bigger hub to other European destinations. All that being said, there are still items on my "Iceland list" so I plan to return next June. P.S. I adore Iceland's summer weather - it beats the 90 degree+ heat and humidity I missed at home while there!

I agree KEF's thing about waiting to announce departure gates is a little wacky. However, the Iceland Air app does seem to be ahead of the airport, so go by that. We actually got our gate notification pretty early on the app, but didn't actually visually verify it until a few minutes before boarding. Live and learn. Lol
