PROS and CONS of TURKEY

Pros and cons of Turkey ⇩⇩Click ‘show more’⇩⇩
👋🏼👋🏼Hey guys and welcome back to my channel. In today’s video, I’ll be discussing the pros and cons of living in Turkey 🇹🇷, thanks to one of our subscribers Kerem for the video idea. If you are new here my name is Lana and I’ve been travelling full time with my partner Carlos for the past two years. We have been living in Turkey 🇹🇷 now for a little over 2 months, this was longer than our intended stay; with all the travel restrictions and lockdowns happening right now we decided it was best for us to stay put right where we are.
🚨All opinions in the video are based on my own experiences, of course, everyone is different. We are not living here permanently so these are just my experiences from the 2 months that we’ve spent in Turkey.
🚨***EDIT we ended up staying a total of 5 months in Turkey 🇹🇷 and loved EVERY SECOND of it! It was hard to think of some cons for this country. Turkey 🇹🇷 is a country we will continue to revisit! I love my time there.***
Thanks for watching! ☺️

Update: Thank you all for watching its great to hear your thoughts! We had an awesome time in Turkey and it was really hard to come up with any cons for this video as you could see. I also forgot to mention that I never expect people to speak English, this was more just information for other foreigners visiting Turkey 🇹🇷 as often times people ask me how much English is spoken in each country we visit. Thank you again! We miss Turkey very much, Lana :) What are some pros or cons you have experienced in Turkey? Hope everyone is doing well also! Let me know what you’ve been up to during quarantine.

@Yu Chi That's a surprise as they have a great variety of food and drinks but taste and colours are not for debates. I used to have an Asian roommate and my taste was not adjusted on Far Asian food. For example, I disliked sweet and salted together etc. I like more the Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern food.

Yeah, the western yoghurt is actually strained yoghurt and vast majority of them are also sweetened so when westerners eat Turkish yoghurt they find it weird as it is watery and plain compared to what they are used to but in reality this is the yoghurt as it is a Turkish word coming from yoğurt and you can use Turkish yoghurt as a sauce, drink or even make a soup out of it while western yoghurt is like a desert or snack without much usability in their cuisine. I don't know why it is sold like that in the west perhaps to increase profits somehow..

  • @Kara_Pabuc

    @Kara_Pabuc

    3 жыл бұрын

@@ggoddkkiller1342 Well, there is no such thing as "Western yoğurt". There is **yoğurt** and if you put stuff in it, you'll make yoğurt with something else in it. Danone, a company that established by an Ottoman Jewish Dr. İzak Karasu in Barcelona, Spain, actually introuduced the yoğurt to western side of The World. So, every misconception about yoğurt in today's world tied to Danone and it's branding! Such a shame.

I am an American expat living in Southern Ukraine and have just returned from a week long trip to Marmaris. I must say I was overwhelmed by how nice Turkey is. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I was surprised how modern and clean everything is....no trash on the streets and everyone keeps their homes/businesses very tidy plus the people are so warm and friendly. I loved the weather as I am from NE Florida/SE Georgia and it was similar to what I grew up with. I love sailing and the possibilities are endless as you are in the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas. I am definitely going back and hopefully for a longer stay.

There is a popular seller of Kayseri Food: Şahin Sucukları. I suppose they sell online. The Manti i have mentioned is frozen. And there are a lot of video on youtube about how to make manti. Hey Lana! It's really good to have a quick look at popular scams in places and then you are prepared a little. When we were in Turkey we only had time in Istanbul and it felt like a big city in many ways in terms of how people deal with foreigners. But my dad went somewhere else and he also talked a lot about how kind and lovely local people are and up for a chat and a cup of tea together etc. So lovely to hear. Meeting wonderful people always makes a place more special! :)

I have been travelling to Turkey for over 30 years . I have been to remote regions of the country, tourist areas too. I have never had any problem finding people who speak English to a very high standard . They are highly educated people and are among the kindest and helpful people I have met . Another tip , learn some basic Turkish phrases , I have made so many Turks laugh , when I massacre their language .... I’m thinking of doing some standup comedy . When you decide what you are about order in a restaurant , make sure they see you Writing your order and the price of each dish on a wee notepad. If they ask you why you’re doing it , tell them you write for a travel magazine. I’ve had so many free coffees , teas even beers from blagging the truth. I can’t wait to get back there late this year. Chill and enjoy the rest of your travels .

From an Australian/Turkish/Canadian, who has lived in all three countries for many years. KEY PROS: 1. General kindness and willingness to help others 2. The way people live open lives with their family community and neighbors (doors are open) 3. Landscape diversity - in Antalya where I live we have mountains, beaches, forests, farms, city, rivers, snow, sunshine, everything.... The same can be said across much of the country. 4. Really nice but simple foods. In most countries you can get nice food, but less accessible than in Turkey. A simple soup or iskender on any corner is awesome. 5. Mini-markets... On every corner, open 24/7. Get basic snacks, drinks, smokes, bread, whatever... wherever, whenever. 6. In a general sense very safe (at least for me). I found living there, even walking home alone at 3am regularly, much safer than cities in Australia and Canada. In 3.5 years never once had any issue or really any sense of nervousness. 7. In general the most progressive and inclusive Islamic country (you get a cool vibe mix of European and Middle-Eastern, modern and traditional). 8. The quality of produce. Fruit, veg and everything else, locally grown/made and super cheap. KEY CONS: 1. Some of those "scams" you would say. At times especially in touristy areas people will try to extract a couple dollars where they can - like sharing a large bill at a restaurant they can inflate it due to people losing track of who ordered what (especially when you get drinks too). 2. Still a little traditional, cultural and religious overflow relating to roles in society between male and female. Although very much becoming more western, there is a little bit of "man's world" - that said, better overall hospitality offsets it a fair bit. 3. The price of imported product. Cars are very expensive to own, fuel isn't cheap, electronics aren't cheap, alcohol isn't cheap. 4. Can occasionally be challenging to get around in the less touristy areas due to the lack of English speaking in the population, despite it being a pre-requisite in schooling. 5. Rubbish - in some areas you will find garbage where you would much prefer not to. Education about picking up after yourself, preserving nature and such are a little behind. When I go to camp by a beach somewhere I often find myself cleaning up the area first. NOTES: 1. I did not include the smoking as a pro or con. I am not a smoker, but will occasionally have one on a night out and I find it to personally be a pro. I like the social aspect of it and the casual, less-restrictive attitude that it brings to lifestyle. 2. I tried to not include things like "summers are super hot" which is a con for me, but many people crave that. Trying for objectivity over subjectivity. 3. I find that there are a lot more that I could add to the PRO column, and not too many more significant ones to add to the CON... Turkey is a great country! Everyone I have ever met that has travelled there has love it, and is near the top of their list because of the way it manages to exceed expectation and surprise.

Hey Lana, it's a nise video with good information. My experience was very bad I had visited last month stayed for 10 days, it's difficult if you don't know their language. Once you are recognized as a tourist you are ripped off every where you are charged double or even triple. I wish I had seen your video before I left my country.

Hello! Thanks for watching! I’m sorry to hear about your experience in Turkey 🇹🇷. It can be hard as a tourist sometimes if you don’t have all the information. I highly recommend going to less touristy areas I aways have better experiences in local neighbourhoods it feels more authentic and you don’t get ripped off there. I know the feeling of being ripped off it can leave a sour taste in your mouth of a place, but I hope you will get to experience Turkey again another time. I have some videos coming soon of some less touristy neighbourhoods to visit in Istanbul so if you do plan to come back anytime you could add them to your list ☺️

I would like to add to this that as a single woman I do not recommend Istanbul alone (particularly Sultanahmet area - locked in a restaurant, groped in a taxi and also groped in sunglasses store just a small sample of delights). You get harassed, stalked and groped constantly, it is really not nice to be dealing with that every day at all. I was recommended to cover my hair and wear fake wedding ring, which is probably really good advice but shouldn't have to be like that. I spent a whole month in Istanbul. Perhaps it is a better experience on the Eastern side, I do not know I was just so done with the place I wanted completely away. I am now in Alanya, in the south of Turkey, and the experience is so much better. The people are much more chilled and I have been given no problems here. I love it so much I would like to stay a lot longer.

Couple guys tried to do the shoeshine scam to me and my son in Istanbul, fortunately I realized what they were trying to do to us and acted really quick, retrieved the money they took from my son and walked quickly far from them. It happened in my last day in Istanbul, even though I got shocked by this experience, my vacation in Turkey was one I will always remember, one regret: not knowing the language.

@@marisabelv4879 They don’t have bad intentions actually. They want 5$ max for their service but scam is scam. I am not defending them. Hope you had a great experience
