Pros and Cons of the University of Michigan
Hi everyone! In case some of you don't know I am a junior at the University of Michigan and I know that early action decisions came out recently so I wanted to give my opinions about the pros and cons of the University of Michigan. Now that I have three years under my belt, I feel like I can talk about some things that some of the other videos don't cover, since they just haven't had experience with it yet.
I feel like I could come up with more pros and cons such as the pro of having the biggest football stadium in the country or a con of how frats don't let random guys into their parties (but as I've gotten older I now see this as a pro for safety reasons). However, these are the main ones that affect the most amount of people.

I got accepted EA to the University of Michigan. I'm still deciding whether or not I want to go. This has honestly been the best pro/con video I've seen, so thank you :)

this is great! i never went there, but as i mentioned in prior comments my aunts, uncles, and brother all went here. and i love the place. and actaully one of your cons. i didn't get in even though my adjusted HS GPA went from 3.1 up to 3.4 i think. and that was't even good enough. i would have gone there

@@HaydenWeber your welcome
I watched your videos a lot when I was applying to the University of Michigan....I just got in last Friday and I might go here next year!! I was wondering if you think the pros and cons of University of Michigan would differ as an in-state student.

Hi! Congrats on your acceptance! I definitely think that there are some different pros and cons to being an instate student. Specifically a pro or con (depends on what you are wanting) is that there are sooo many people from Michigan and more than likely lots of people you will run into from your high school. However, the pros of being affordable instate and not having to spend a lot of money to get home is definitely a plus!
this video was so helpful, im deciding on whether or not to go to umich at the moment! i was going to commit, but now im a little scared 😭 is it worth it? im so nervous

I would literally recommend it so much! I have no regrets!
hey!! i’m battling between UNC and UMICH right now (i’m a north carolina resident so unc is half the price and that’s definitely holding me back from committing to michigan!). i’m in love w umich bc of the balance between school spirit, academics, and athletics so i’ve been trying to apply to as many opportunities as possible to make it more justifiable. i’m waiting to hear about getting the LEAD scholarship at umich (it would even out the price) and i also applied to the honors program. your first con (housing) is making me nervous about waiting to commit to uofm. is there a way to guarantee good housing? since i applied to the honors program, ik there’s a potential for me to guarantee central campus housing but what about other non-learning communities? what would you say are some of the best dorms or just general places/areas to live? i like a good party (i’ll probably rush) but i take academics seriously too. if you have any tips or tricks when it comes to freshman year as an out of state student please share🫶🏻🫶🏻 thank you so much, this video was unbelievably helpful!

Hi there! First off congrats getting into two amazing schools! There isn't really a way to guarantee good housing unless you are in the honors program and learning communities, unfortunately. I think some of the "best" dorms are west quad, east quad, south quad, and mosher jordan (MoJo). However, even though I lived on North, I LOVEDDDDD MY DORM. It was the exact experience I was looking for and it was its own community up there. To me it was just annoying that we all paid the same, when I literally had less amenities and to take a bus down to central. As an out of state student I would say that they best thing to do is to meet people from out of state and also in-state. I have gone home with some of my in-state friends before and it's nice to have a weekend away sometimes. However, there are plenty of people that come from North Carolina to Michigan, so you could definitely find some people in the same boat as you. One of my roommates is from Chapel Hill actually! I also recommend getting involved in something on campus when you get here, it makes the school feel a lot more small when you have a network of people!
My oldest is at Seton Hall and also does not get the full week off for the Thanksgiving. Now my younger son is considering UM. When do you usually find out those M/T classes are cancelled?
@HaydenWeber
2 ай бұрын
Honestly sometimes they tell you in the syllabus, but I have also had classes that decide the Friday before break. So unfortunately, I usually just plan to skip them regardless if they end up getting cancelled or not because most of the class isn't there anyways.
What did you mean by nepotism? Honestly didn’t understand. Ty!
Is there anything you can do to get a good dorm going into freshman year or is it completely randomized?
@HaydenWeber

Sometimes if you have food allergies or join learning communities you can guarantee certain dorms. But it can change year to year, so you would need to do your research!
Baits is lowkey the best dorm in every regard, en-suite bathrooms, the tight community and u take the bus with same people each day so u get to know lots of people

Baits is definitely nice amenity wise… most people I knew there though felt it wasn’t super social
Applied to MI as a transfer with a near perfect GPA. Haven’t heard back yet but I believe I’ll be accepted. I’m also older than most students. Glad I watched this. Have no interest in college sports whatsoever. I feel relieved to cross MI off my list. Prestigious school, no question, but not for me. I personally am not thrilled about the Midwest location. I myself am seeking a university in a large city. Bar scene? I don’t need a bar scene. Good luck to everyone in getting into where you want to go. Good review; thanks.

Glad this was helpful!
baits is not the worst!!! everyone thinks it is but it’s way better than bursely and even better than some other dorms. every room has a shared bathroom with suitmates and there is mini kitchens and other rooms in the baits houses. also you can create super great friends since it’s a smaller community. would never change being in baits 😌

I’m glad to hear that! Since I lived in Bursley, I knew a lot of people that lived in Baits and didn’t have the same love for it as you seem to have. But each person’s opinions are different… go blue!
Honestly there are 2 really big cons. One is that it’s not a cheap college town. Many of the out of state students come from rich households and can afford pricey stuff so businesses jack up their prices. Especially restaurants. It is starting to attract a lot of homelessness as well. And the last con is drug problems. You may not know it but the access to get really hard drugs is really easy due to the Canadien-Detroit border. Many notorious drug dealers like to target umich students. The umich police has not done a great job on this to tell you the truth. This is happening at msu as well but Ann Arbor has been notorious for this. And doing a shroom and weed festival is not ok. That’s where the drug dealers show up to introduce new illegal drugs to students. It’s like the umich board wants their student body to do hardcore drugs. Other than that there are no cons. And this is coming from someone who has been around the campus for a while and is a huge umich fan. Do have fun but stay safe. 〽️〽️〽️

Thanks for some additional cons, it definitely is not cheap. I'm not as aware about the drug problem, but that is good information to know!

Oh my gosh, I am so sad to hear about the drug problems. That was NEVER an issue when I went there way back in the late 70s early 80s. I am so disappointed to hear that. WOW!!
how is the financial aid for out of state students
@HaydenWeber

It totally depends on your fafsa, however, I wouldn’t say it’s amazing. But in comparison to the other out of state school I got into, Michigan gave me more aid than they did.

I went to Michigan in the late 70's early 80's and just about every con you discussed was exactly the same with the exception of the language classes. Sixteen credits if you don't test out is highway robbery. Honestly, it's not about the language, it's about the money they are stealing from you. As far as football, Michigan use to win most if not all of their games and it was nothing to win the BIG every year. It was expected. The games were always fun! No disrespect, but I am so happy I never have to take another class ever again. Best of luck.

Haha I totally understand the "happy to never have to take another class ever again". I am pretty close to being done with school. I agree about the highway robbery, the thing that bothers me is that not every school at Michigan requires it. But anyways, go blue!

@@HaydenWeber you are welcome. btw, i can give you an example of this. a lady i knnow was in a terrible motor cycle accdent over 10 years ago with her husband. they were even reading her her last rights (some catholic thing) and her entire leg was hanging on by a thread. they told her she would have to amputate it. she said no. so the yairlifted her to Michigan's hostpical. and they literally had surgeouns that were so good they literally stihed back together hundres maybe 1000 diffrent little fibers in her leg over several surgeries and saved her leg. she still is using that leg fairly normal to this day. but they said UM was the only place within 500 miles that could do it
