All I wanted to do when I was a kid was get the hell out of Oklahoma. So I moved to Southern California when I graduated high school and was there for about 10 years until I realized how much I missed this place and the genuine nature of the people here.

Being from one of the coldest cities in the lower 48 (Minneapolis), I wouldn’t exactly say there is a windchill here, let alone a true winter. The winters here are extremely easy to get through. Often, the temps here are in the 50’s. There are less than a handful of occasional cold days. I didn’t shovel snow once, since I’ve been here. You do have to watch out for the freezing rain though.

First of all, I would like to thank you for making this informative video about Oklahoma City. I have lived in OKC before for several years. While I understand, there are alot of positive advantages about it as you were mentioning such as lower cost of living, housing affordability, friendlier people. There are still alot of major problems with OKC such as crime, racism, political parties, lack of education, not valuing education, many people being rigid and close minded when it comes to change or economic/infrastructure development. There is also alot of corruptuon and not as many industries or opportunities here compared to bigger cities or more industrialized areas. It boils down to personal interests. However, I will say that if you are coming from California to OKC; you could live like a King here in OKC. One of my friends from California sold their 800sqft house for $2million near Santa Monica. Then moved to OKC, bought a huge house and then 4 other houses and turned the other 4 into rental properties. Now, he does not have to work for the rest of his life and can take it as a breeze in OKC.

Well, if you ever project that attitude to people, I can see why you don’t make friends. If I met someone and they shit all over where I live, especially if it’s a place I like, the best they would get from me is a polite, yet aloof attitude. I’ve been in the same boat. And when I copped the attitude of “I’m only here because I don’t have any better options,” it wasn’t well received. The best thing I did was find a job in a more desirable area and relocate.

The culture around football and game day can't really be beat, but wait until you find out about the other sports as well! I will say, it gets REALLY hot here. So maybe either plan a tour down here during the spring to see for your self, or perhaps make sure you always plan to spends summers either back home or abroad until you get used to to it.

There are a lot of programs to make international students feel welcome, help with the transition to living around a new culture, and there are also programs you can join to be partnered up with an American student if that's something you would like. There are a lot of great multicultural organizations as well as organizations geared towards all variety of different nationalities, cultural groups, and even spoken languages. The university has worked hard to make OU a very diverse and inclusive campus for students from all walks of life and from all over the world.

The biggest problem OK has with roads in the clay soil. It expands and contracts too much and causes problems on the surface. It’s why almost all the PCC highways have issues slab vaulting. Soil stabilization really jacks up the cost of building highways. Overall, the roads are a lot better off than they were 20 years ago when I first visited. Lots of room for improvement yet.

About 20% of OKC's population is Hispanic. I can't speak directly to what it is like being Mexican here, but I do know from several friends, coworkers, and family members that there are very large and close-knit communities and organizations geared towards all walks of life, careers, and interests in OKC, if that's something you would like. As a bonus, being a native Spanish speaker is frequently a highly valued skillset to have for work as there are so many Spanish speakers in Oklahoma. There are also quite a few Hispanic and Latino owned and operated business, restaurants, churches, supermercados, medical practices, etc. It would be naive to say there aren't some people who really need a personality change, but as a whole, I personally don't really know anybody who would treat you differently, at least in OKC. A good relator can also help with avoiding the unfortunate areas that aren't as welcoming.

@terrancewilhite hi there - I gotta ask where in Oklahoma was this, and how long ago? I've lived in Oklahoma City my whole life (44 years), and I haven't been to church since I was a child. Not only does nobody care, nobody knows, because that's my personal business and nobody asks. OKC is not a city of evangelical extemists, so your experience sounds very odd. Sure, it's conservative here and there are a lot of people who live a faith based life, but I don't personally know anyone who feels any pressure culturally to align with any one faith.

Okc being a conservative area is definitely another pro. Probably why it's so affordable is because they vote republican.
