Utah here!! I love winter riding! Less people on the road and being able to better control your temperature with heated gear is a game changer. I don’t ride under 15 degrees, for some reason that’s when my visor ices up from my breath.

Once it salts here I’m done. Can’t wait for spring

Awesome vid, I also ride year round & do use most of the techniques you demonstrated to stay warm but you definitely gave me some more ideas to try out. My buddies think I’m crazy but I don’t care, I’m 60 & never have I winterized my bike. I don’t like to let my bike sit for long periods, even short rides are worth it, great tips!

Watching this video would save many, many hours of searching motorcycle apparel stores and getting totally confused and making a wrong choice. A bit thanks to Cycle Fanatix for imparting such good knowledge.

Anything that touches my skin is always merino wool. Check it out there are different thicknesses and there is no odor.

Great timely video. Day after Xmas everyone can buy all their gear on sale and save some nice $$$. As for chaps, brother I swear by them. I never take a long road trip and not wear them. I’ve ridden across 115 degree desert temperatures headed towards higher elevation and cooler weather, and chaps keep direct the sun off, deflect debris, they don’t ride as “hot” as you might think in the wind. And they do a good enough job in the cold, or a rain shower here or there. I’m not saying they keep you 100% dry, and they don’t, but they do serve a great layer of protection. An important note, you cut off the bottoms long enough to cover the front of your boot in a sitting position on the bike.

Excellent video. Agree with most of it. Been using Gerbring for years. Gloves and heated line. Where I respectfully disagree is your hot weather comments. I live in Southern Nevada and have ridden in temps of over 120. Wearing a shirt and no helmet can be the kiss of death. At over 100 degrees the hot air will suck the the moisture right out of you. I had heat stroke wearing a t-shirt and no helmet on a 6 hour ride in 100 degrees temps. Now I wear a vented light jacket and full face while on my 2016 Harley Ultra. Thank again for a great video. Lol, I am digging out my chaps. Great advice.

Great info man. We are in Colorado and typically don't ride unless it's in the 50's. I may have to invest in some heated apparel to be able to ride more in these winter months. Like you said once your hands and feet get cold it's game over.

Rode a dyna 2 years as my only transportation. No fairing, no windshield, no heated grips, seat or gear. You learn to layer. Only thing that I ever really hated was how cold my hands got. Coldest temperature I rode in was 20 degrees. If your gonna be stupid you better be tough.

Thank you for the great video. Live in Colorado and ride everyday to work and do a 40 to 60 mile loop on the way home as long as the roads are clear. For me it clears the head and I love to ride. I need to try the heated gloves because that is the weakest point for me when I ride in this cold weather. I use klime mittens that are too bulky. Hopefully the heated gloves will handle the 17 - 23 degree weather. I don't wear chaps anymore because I have a great pair of winter leather bibs that are second to none that keep me warm. thanks again!

Best investment ever, California heated gear, heated rain gear, add or remove layers… all season gear.. for the long range rider… climate changes dramatically crossing states…plus has protection padding

I've been using heated gear for over 20 years I love it.

I also use gerbing gear, but all hardwired. A truly valued addition to my setup is my wireless temperature controller. I can adjust my torso heat, as well As hands/feet right from the wireless remote mounted to my handlebars.

A good winter riding day is slim here in Milwaukee. There is too much salt on the roads.

I live in Southern Cal so of course I ride all year, but I take trips into Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in the winter and have hit cold temps on just about every ride. The coldest weather I have ridden in so far was 23 degrees. I have heated grips but no heated gear, I just layer up, base level usually Under Armor Cold gear, jeans and good pair of HD over pants, wool socks, wool glove liners with an HD gauntlet glove. It gets hard to move with all the gear so I would imagine the heated gear would allow you to wear less layers and be more comfortable. I haven’t worn my chaps since I bought the FXRG over-pants from Harley.

Adding the Gerbing wired gear. Riding to Daytona in March from KY is brutal. You’ve got quite the arsenal of gear there John.

I like the 3/4 Aria classic V. Very comfortable and snell certified.

Yesterday, 16 degrees in Maine, 40 minutes from home my gloves shut off- no fun. 4 key items for me: smartwool ski socks, alpinestars one piece baselayer, patagonia capilene mid layer, full dianese balaclava. I mention the manufacturers because after trying others these work best

Always carry extra batteries...I carry 2 additional sets whenever I ride in cold weather. I also recommend replacing them after a season or 2. I usually get an 1 1/2 to 2hrs out of a set on high setting. So I basically have 2 sets for the ride & 1 set as a backup. Although I hate to be wired up...I think this yr I'm gonna purchase the Y cable that plugs directly to the bike as a final fail safe. But since I'm not pluging into a heated jacket I'll have to get the special double headed female connectors to plug the y cable to the gloves.

All I own is the Sedici. I find it cooler on hot days than just a t-shirt because the wind is directed around my torso cooling me down.

I always learn something about bikes, equipment, traveling etc… watching your videos. I’ve been binging your ST videos as I just got mine looking for ideas. Thanks

Great pointers. My best bit of advice is the base layer cannot be cotton (think old school thermals) - it absorbs sweat and you will stay cold. Use moisture wicking materials. Best source is ski gear. Game changer

I'm in my mid 30's and I rock the chaps too man ! It's definitely the difference between riding and not when it's in the freezing range. Who cares if it looks cool , as long as it helps me get time In on my bike , I'm down with it .

Excellent video on winter riding. Like you said in the north east you always have a beautiful day that pops up here and there. Just wondering have you seen any soft lowers that block the wind for the newer style crash bars or only the bigger bars?

I love my Harley leather jacket that sucker keeps me warm in the winter. I'm ordering Memphis shade handguards. On the way up to Sturgis bird hit my hand felt like it broke my fingers.

Exactly. I got hit by a piece of gravel and I thought I broke my finger. The hand guards are a must.

I got caught in -5 degree weather . I thought my Gervinho stuff was broken . I kept unplugged and realized quickly that they were working but just couldn't handle the weather . I'll never do that again willingly . Thank you for the recommendation on the windshield . I definilty Lu need a new winter shield on my new ultra classic. As fast as the looks I don't care as long as I am warm . Up in the northeast ( NY NJ) we ride with the polar bear Grand tour all winter . My las bike was the gl1800 goldwing with lots more wind protection . Trying to set my self up early for the upcoming colder weather .

I have a different take on hot weather gear, and I have suffered heat exhaustion in the past because of crappy gear choices. I wear a mesh or textile jacket with vents over an LD Comfort base layer. If its really hot, I soak my base layer in a sink and wring it out (don't do this with a cotton shirt!). Freezes me out if I have too many vents open. Hell of a lot more comfortable, my skin is protected. Otherwise, the hairdryer type blowing of hot wind on my arms heats me up and wears me out.

Great video. I never used to want to wear my chaps bc of the way they looked. Until I started riding 300 + miles in 40 degree weather. Now I could care less what they look like when l get off of the bike.

I live in Minnesota… I’ll be riding. I rode on thanksgiving and a few days later…. I could have ridden since then.. but had to work.. but definitely there are days where riding is absolutely ok..

Good leather and some heated gloves. Down to 19* pre wind chill That’s as far as I’ve gone.. 20s no joke either. I love seeing others that are out there . I live in Chicagoland and have seen ZERO bikes out in last 2 weeks (besides me) But upper 30s.. good for a few hours for sure

Great presentation John! We ride 12 months a year here in Oklahoma using heated gear. Love H-D heated gear. I agree that glove liners are better than heated grips.

You motivated me to ride in the cold. I purchased the gear and rode at 13 degrees yesterday. I posted a small KZread video documenting it. I need a heated face mask. Lol

Carhardt makes a good under wear for extreme cold.. I use in Minnesota… cheaper than under armour But just as good…

i was avid rider in the cold when lived in wi, but got tired of the bulky and tight unable to move. i used the heated stuff mostly when i was a snowmobile game warden. been years ago now. i have had thoughts about heated gloves in design, they need to be like plain leather for palms and extra thick insulation backsides so easier to grip and warmer especially if have heated grips. my current winter riding at least to and from work, have to take into consideration if the hill go over has snow or ice on it. from like 10 am to 3pm usually not back warms to 60+. the chaps, in summer had friend who wore shorts under while riding and at stops take off and be comfy but also when fitting right, nice way direct air up the legs help in cooling with a little water down inside!

Man, I praise for doing this video on gear!! Outstanding job covering pretty much all temps. Probably one of the best gear videos I've seen!! I have an '18 RGS and I live in Ohio, and once the salt flies, mine is parked till it's over!! Thats just me. I've been looking at the Gerbing line and man is it expensive so I'm going to have to find that perfect balance as far as purchasing, cuz I'm not going to be able to buy it all like you have. I don't travel as far as you either. I'm on rides for a few hours and I'm home. So as far as that goes, would you recommend me buying the battery powered versus the plug in? Of the jacket, vest, and heated shirt, which would you suggest? and as far as sizing were pretty close except, I'm at 225. What size are you wearing and how do the sizes run, true, big, small etc. I would greatly appreciate any feedback! You have some great videos! I have a full face but I love my 3/4 I make it work in the 30s

Our HotWired heated gear has the heated collar also, we run normal street clothes under ours and in real cold weather we put our light rain gear over it to cut all the wind. They add up to 3 months to our Canadian riding season for both of us. We are hard wired all the time, no batteries on ours. They are very thin so no bulky feeling ever. We love them and lifetime warranty also at Cycle Gear…

Hey john I thought you wear heated pants as well. I also wear your setup for pants and chaps lol. But last Friday it was like 27 starting out and road from Brooklyn to nj and I felt like the leather chaps were cold and kept my legs cold. Have you ever tried heated pants before? If so what do you recommend. PS was only riding because my club brother wife funeral escort.

Cold weather riding gear is pretty expensive. Does sadetchie(?) make gloves? Rain gear does wonders in keeping you warm. The coldest I have ever rode in was 17 degrees but that was only for about 15 miles

Can you also use The 12 V plug-in jacket with a battery pack?

Is there a trick to keeping your visor on a full face from fogging in cold weather? Maybe a dumb question but been struggling with this. Anti fog wipes really don’t work. Have a great Shoei but visor still fogs unless I have it cracked open

@@CYCLEFANATIX No I do not. The inner shield seemed to be kind of obscure to me and looked like it would be hard to see through but if that is what is done to ride in the cold and not fog up I will give it a try. Good vid, great tips all around.
