My beautiful 94 year old Dad passed away exactly a month ago today and his funeral was this Monday 13th May. He was born in Chigwell and lived in Loughton, Walthamstow, Woodford Green and Leystonstone in his early years. He would always go on about pie and mash and liquor and Manze's and so on. This was his bread and butter and he would go down to Manze's with his dad and brother, cousins and uncles in the late 40s and into the 50s. He was perhaps not a true East Ender but loved West Ham and Leyton Orient and loved the London that he grew up in. Last year we watched a few of your clips DJ where you and I believe the McMaster, on one occasion, went to these Pie and Mash places and the joy on his face was amazing so thanks for that lovely memory. Mum, now 93 and with dementia, has just watched this and it has taken her back as she was born in Stockwell and lived in Woodford and Loughton for many years.

In my younger days. It was pie, (upside down in a bowl.) 1, 2 or 3 mash. Served to the table. Then the liqour, Steaming hot, was poured over. My father and later me always took our own NBC. No other vinegar will do.

Food of the gods is that there Pie, Mash and Liquor. Having lived over the other side of the water, Manzes has always been a staple although these days it is the veggie pies for me. I can still appreciate pie and mash in its originality, never liked eels though was like rubber when I tried them Interesting re the knife story, never used a spoon myself nor the chilli vinegar. Pie and Mash brings back memories, it is such a staple and so reasonable in price, that is what makes it unique. Anyhow the pie, mash and liquor looked wonderful. Thank you for showing us your experience .

The is only 1 traditional cockney pie & mash shop left in the east end. F.Cook's, Hoxton market Est 1899. They still bone their own flanks of beef for the mince and use the same recipe's from 1935. Sadly I think Joe Cook is the last of the family still keeping it alive and going. Bloody expensive though...lol Nostalgia seems to come at a price nowadays.

I love the idea of travelling to London for the pie and mash. The trouble is, my least favourite herb is parsley (childhood memories 🤢) and I’m led to believe that’s what the liquor consists of, and eel juice!?😕 A nice thick meat gravy over that pie and mash, that’ll do me! I’ll come down for that! 😋

Just to let you know mate, he's perfectly correct about giving the steel knives away to help the war effort. It was the second world war and everyone gave pots, pans, cutlery and whatever metal they had to go towards making munitions, tanks, guns, bullets etc. Even the railings at most houses and schools were cut down and put to use too. That helped us win the war. Also, the chilli vinegar is a recent thing, normal malt vinegar and white pepper has always been a traditional condiment but not chilli vinegar. By the way, it looked delicious and I'm sure it was. I used to have it at least once a week as a kid, and eels mash and liquor but I no longer live in London so haven't had it for years. My old man used to catch eels from the Thames when I was a kid and make jellied eels for us, lovely grub.

Love the story of the spoon and fork and what a great chap the proprietor is. Love your videos but they always make me hungry watching them. Question - watching all that lovely grub could I put on weight whilst sitting in my armchair?😉😉😉👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

This use to be a cheap meal, now it’s expensive for what it is. A very small amount of mince in a pie with 1 potato mashed.

People only see the food cost. They don't think about the rent for the shop, the electric, water, gas, cleaning materials, staff wages & is the boss allowed to have a wage. Or you could set one up & just charge for the food.

I’ll take that story of why no knives. If anyone has a pie and mash shop locally, give it a visit👍🏻

DJ have you been to Castles pie and mash just off Camden Road? Been going 30 years myself. My Dad introduced me to it

Each time I see you review a resturant I'm jealous. My diet is very strict. I put up with the torture because you have an ex ellent channel. 😅
