Propagating Portuguese Laurel

For me it is one of the best hedging plants, but not just got hedges, I also like it as a solitary plant, also they are so easy to propagate and you do this at the end of the gardening season, which is even better.... here is how

hi jochen, dont want to rain on your video, i enjoyed it, but we were always taught in college not to smother the base of the cutting with hormone powder, it stimulates callusing, too much hormone just produces a big crusty callus and new roots are less liable to form, we were told to just dab the cutting base lightly in the powder, hope this helps.

Thank you for the info. I checked them the other day and some seemed to have taken and some didn't, perhaps the powder was the issue with some? Going to do an update video soon.

The best time would be sep - oct I did it in November, as far as I am concerned I would give it a shot, it has 2 chances, especially when you have a big plant. if you tr it let me know how you are getting on.

Good video, thanks. Question: I have 100 metres of portugese laurel (very small leaf), this year we’ve noticed lots of yellowing leaves with black spots on, plus the green leaves are covered in small holes as if it’s being eaten…inspected but can’t see any critters! Any ideas what I should do? It’s never been cut, and I 100% don’t want to cut )it’s around 10ft tall. Thanks.

Thank you, the yellowing spots can be a fungus, or if the leaves are also eaten it could be spider mites. I would try a fungicide first and then a broad spectrum pesticide. Let me know how are you getting on.

@@jochen.allardice-grein thank you. Can you recommend a good fungicide, I’ve already tried copper sulphate.

@Around The World In 18 Years I usually use broad spectrum fungicide ( for non eatable plants) I also tried Apple cider vinegar before on all the eatable plants and that worked well too. A tablespoon of vinegar to 3.5 litter of water.

The way I see it give it a shot, while you usually take cuttings after the growing season try it if it doesn't work you can always do it again in September/October. This is what I love about gardening, it either works or doesn't. Let me know how you are getting on please
