There are still surprisingly "philosophical" moments on "1234". Most of the original-line-up swept away for the occasion - but then, "A Secret Wish" while remaining a favourite, wasn't recorded by consistent line-up either - which happens to have changed between "Disziplin" in 1983 and "Wishful Thinking in 1985. Propaganda was always more of a studio project of joint forces (an interesting bunch of people actually... The trademark sound was indeed too strong on "A Secret Wish" for "1234" to compare, but I accept the fact Propaganda mk II weren't even considering to repeat any of the formula that made their debut a bigger favourite. At the time this was a bit too sophisticated or say - "boring" - but from a time distance of 24 years, "1234" is one of those best underrated albums that define the true side of what is "adult-pop". And having the original Simple Minds' rhythm section in the line-up, the gorgeous Betsi Miller singing respectfully, keeping some of the early artsy moments + Michael Mertens and Suzanne Freitag still contributing... Maybe the whole of Propaganda is way too much credit given to Claudia Brücken alone - while she gave it a voice and a face, Propaganda is too strong a collective rather than just work of one person. Which again, makes "1234" like an old red wine, forgotten - but just as tasty.
