Proof that Photography is Good For You
Today I go outdoors with my Hasselblad 501cm film camera and a roll of Portra 160 film. I start the day feeling uneasy and anxious, but things soon turn around and my mental health improves once I start engaging with the landscape. I encounter a heavy snow storm as I enjoy some landscape photography. I am forever being drawn to the smaller, more intimate scenes and images. This video demonstrates that not everything needs to be a big, epic view.

If it helps, do remember that your videos of the outdoors are also helping other people’s mental health these days. Thank you for taking us to a wonderland forest adventure! And stay safe!

Me too. (But it's simply . . . "with the sheep").
I’m a photographer who’s turning 15 in 3 months and has been shooting pictures since I got my first camera on my 13th birthday. But only recently did I realise how relaxing it is, and how it makes my life better in so many ways. It has helped me survive through lockdown definitely
"I feel like I shouldn't be here." That statement hit home for me. We've all been cooped up so long that being out and about feels....weird. Like we're breaking the rules, acting like the bad kids. I'm thinking I need to be a bad kid more often to get out of this rut. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

I sympathise. Last summer I went out walking a lot, but the recent bad weather has kept me indoors and even though the weather was fine today, I made excuses and didn't go out for a walk. I think I'm going to have to reintroduce myself to the outdoors very gently, like returning a creature to the wild after it's been in captivity for too long.

For me, that sense of agitation is common in the early part of an outing and I know that it will eventually be relieved when nature reveals the shot to me. Then the right brain takes over the left, and the excitement overcomes the agitation. I really appreciate that you shared the struggle that we all go through and not make it look so easy. Thank you!
The last frame with the sheep’s wow what an image so much drama with the snow, wind and the sheep’s marvelous job Thomas
You actually are in a better place than you think when you're feeling that agitation, just by the fact that you caught yourself feeling it. Most just get caught up and taken for the ride. Take a deep breath, appreciate the moment around you, don't run from the feeling, accept it, and know that like all things "this too shall pass." And it does.
Last photo of sheep and trees. I love everything about this photo.composition, softness, two-tone colour scale. Hats off to you.

Appreciate your emotional honesty. Being in lockdown makes me feel like I’m not accomplishing anything (Ontario, Canada). I get outside about 4 times a week to hike and that’s been a mental health boost. Love grasses in snow! And the mounds of snow on ice. Simple images that are peaceful. We have tons of snow here. Take care.
True words - I have experienced joy after a hard day by the setting sun, the rising moon, the lights on the old buildings - just whatever is near your location.
This video makes me appreciate living in Sweden even more. Having the freedom to be out in nature is fundamental to my well-being and being able to do that even if it's just a hobby is something that many around the world can't right now. This might be a bit controversial but, life is about more than just being alive. Life needs to be lived!

I don't think it's controversial at all, just that some people have been frightened half to death by governments and mainstream media that they've forgotten what it is to live their lives.
I love how Thomas can take a picture of grass in snow and have it be better than any ohoto I have ever taken. Absolutely amazing how he easily he can make me feel emotional with his images.
Last two days working in the ER were stressful. I decided to get out today on a warm day and taking photos.
Just got to the 7:10 when you spoken about your mental health and then suddenly I hear a news intro and text 'Breaking News' and thought holy moly Thomas, you've stepped up the graphics in your videos...then realised it was an ad that occurred with impeccable timing. Heart goes out to everyone who is doing it tough in lockdown.
That last photo is so stunning and getting the sheep composed like that you must have been a shepherd in a past life
These sheep in thick snow: outstanding! Love how the snow makes it look like a painting. Would have loved to be out there as well!
What I love most about this channel is that it help me to get ideas. You have an eye for what nobody else sees. I used to struggle a lot to find shots. Since I started following this channel a couple of years ago my bag of ideas has grown and grown. Sometimes I'm out and thinking what would Thomas do in this situation. Keep doing what you do best! Grt guido
You are suffering from lockdown blues, and you are not on your own, but the good news is you are helpng others! Thank You!
I had a very long-winded speech to give about how so many of us are struggling with locking down, staying safe, and dealing with what seems at times to be a tenuous future -- at least for 2021. But, as you have again shown, perhaps all that's needed to be said is simply "Photography is therapeutic."
Personally I love the sheep photo. The grouping of trees and the way the sheep were huddled together are very pleasing.
Amen, the outdoors is free therapy!
The amount of joy you're getting from shooting some grass, snow, and sheep is reminding me that I gotta just go out and shoot. You don't need an amazing landscape or subject to get awesome photos. Great video man. Subscribed!
Great video. That sheep image was gorgeous and I 100% agree, there's nothing better to lift your spirits than getting out in the middle of nowhere and just shooting.
Cheers Thomas, I was out and about the weekend before last and we had snow and it was AMAZING. I had such a blast and was pumped full on energy like a squirrel on caffeine. Like you said - FOMO. Because there was such a long drought of being inside, having nothing "special" to look for except your videos. And your videos helped me a TON - I basically binged everything I could because I was going insane. Keep it up and remember: We're all in this together. You are not alone and there will be different times. Hope I can someday meet you and be on a course with you. Cheers,
Haha. Nope. Not just you. One of my favorite shots this year so far is exactly that; a few blades of grass popping out of the snow. And that sheep shot at the end...pure joy. Love that. And I think that's exactly why you were agitated to start - you didn't seem present. But it seems like once you became part of your surroundings instead of just an observer of them, everything shifted. Yup, being outdoors works every time! Thanks for doing what you do.
The sounds that film camera make at 3:30 is pure music to a mechanical engineers ears!
Photography is amazing for you, at least it has been for me. Some years back I had been laid off and was feeling quite depressed. I took my camera with me when I brought the kids to a local playground and just started to take photos of them. Just that simple act pulled me out of my dark hole and helped me feel good again. I find myself back there now due to being laid off again recently, so I’m bringing my camera with me everywhere to help keep me from falling into depression.
That was the most enjoyable and simple 20 min I've had all week. I don't know another photography KZreadr that can do it as well as you. It's just you and your camera & me enjoying the experience. You are one of a kind Thomas Heaton, don't change a thing Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🦘🇦🇺

I quite often feel the same when i'm out taking photos there are so many other things I should be doing other than having fun. But I try to remind myself I'm only taking a small amount to time and when I'm happy it benefits all who rely on me. Lovely video, the sheep are my favourite image. Keep up the good work. 👍
I'm on day 7 of a post winter travel 14 day quarantine/ time out. Back in the cold and wet West Coast of Canada after 3 months in Costa Rica. I know some will say "suck it up", I will. But my mental health is now effected by being caged after running free. Looking forward to my release and going for a bush walk with the camera. Thanks for sharing Thomas, Pura Vida!
The last photo with the sheep and falling snow, two thumbs up!

That shot with the sheep is stunning simply stunning.
It's good to see you having fun and enjoying photography T!
Beings that each of your videos are 90% B roll, 9% ramblings and 1% of actual photography, you should have no issue getting enough B roll for the director. You are definitely the king of wasting peoples time with B roll.
Don’t give into the fear Tom. You are out there in the snow ❄️, working. Yes it is a tall tripod, brilliant bit of gear. (Got one myself). Thanks for sharing again Thomas. Stay safe 😷🇦🇺

When you mention feeling agitated, I cannot help but think about Morten Hilmer, setting up his camera then sitting down to a cup of coffee to take in the environment and settle into the photo shoot.
Loved the sheep photo. I totally agree about photography and getting outdoors helps your mental health. I don’t what I would do without it. These videos are a great escape during lockdown, thanks so much! 👍

Beautiful photo of the snow and sheep in such a pastoral setting! Lovely!!!
I guess we could say it’s a sheep shot 🙄. I absolutely LOVE it! Everything’s there: lines, background, atmosphere.
Both the sheep and the grass images are so gorgeous.
The last photo is like a painting. Beautiful!
Yeah, I have to agree with everyone else, that last photograph was really lovely.
It always cracks me up when he criticizes his photos as not going to be very good. Then I’m always blown away at how great they are. 😂
a tree some grass some sheep and you produce some amazing images. you are a magician best 20 mins of my week.
Tom you actually brought me away from the epic scenes and into the minimalistic world and I love it so much!
I loved all photographs in this video. but the MOST favourite is the one with ship and trees in the background. What a stunning composition!
Your thoughts on your thoughts really struck a chord with me. Thank you. It was a genuine, real, help.
The final Shot with the sheep was awesome. Best of the bunch, as they disappear into the snow. Keep up the great work
The shape the herd forms really makes this special. If the sheep would have been all over the place it would not be so good. Some good images you managed to take that day 👌
You're definitely not alone in getting excited/inspired by tufts of grass sticking out of snow. We may not have snow here, but I recently took a similar minimalist image of just a few tufts of dune grass coming out of sand.... and it worked so well. Absolutely loved the final sheep image. Really nice work, and good to see you ending on a more positive note.
Love the shot of the sheep in the snow. Excellent. Your videos always do so much for me.
This may have been my favourite video so far. This is what photography is all about.

Beautiful video Thomas. You have always been able to portray the excitement of your photography. I connected deeply with how you expressed your troublesome feelings. I use my woodland and landscape photography to help with my mental health but you showed how important it is to not put pressure on it being the complete solution, to slow down and just enjoy being out there. I did laugh at the end when you were photographing the sheep. At about the 15:45 -16:00 min mark as you were explaining your excitement about the sheep and if you watch in the back ground every sheep wandered off the screen and I though you were going to turn around and they would all be gone. Thanks again.
Woah the last picture with the sheep is just beautiful. What a pleasant scene!
All of the images are beautiful but the final image of the sheep is the coup de grace - makes me want to wish for snow here.
Hey Thomas, this video really helped me actually as I’m a year 11 student who’s grown up with family interested in photography and I’m really interested in photography but feel like I can’t at the moment and feel trapped by not only online school but just being stuck in doors and not quite sure why but just watching your video made me feel better.
Hi Thomas, I'm stuck in the house with a broken foot and your videos keep me sane! (I already went out into the bush after 2 weeks and rebroke it!) So keep doing outings for me !!
This has brought tears to my eyes mate. That's how I've felt, should I be here? It's so confusing, we all grew up with total freedom and are now constantly questioning everything we do. Not for long, my vaccinations are booked. Great video and thank you for providing an outlet, you are top, brother.
Loved the last image of the sheep in the snow. A beautiful composition. Thanks for sharing!
I know that feeling well, the anxiety of knowing that you're supposed to be working and not enjoying yourself as much as you are when you're able to just exist and photograph.
The sheep photo is wonderful. Glad it helped you find some happy space. That's what photography does for me 😊
That sheep photo is amazing! I paused the video and looked at it for a while. Such a deep image.
Oh that last image! Like a painting. Congratulations on getting surprised by your passion about an image even though you were not planned on it
Right back at your best - can see the difference that something unexpected made to your eye and mood. Nothing wrong with getting excited at grass in snow - I first did 49 years ago and still do now, even by proxy! Cheers 👍👍👍
It's official at this point, I think we should be friends. Love the positivity man!
All great images Thomas but personally I love the first, the mixture of deciduous trees and the way the snow is sat on them is beautiful. Good luck with capturing the images you need for the film and I have every faith in you getting them. The powers that be couldn’t have approached a more capable guy 👍
the last one with the sheep looks like a painting. Great. I don't really know what the lock down rules in the UK are, but getting out in safe way is extremely important for mental health. Isolating and lack of physical activity is terrible for mental health.
Absolutely love that last image of the sheep in the snow, amazing stuff!
Being in winter and not getting out much must be hard. I am towards the end of summer on the other side of the world in Tasmania. We are on an island and have no restrictions getting out in the bush. I realise how lucky we are . Having said this , winter is my favourite time for photography. Isn’t it great that small things can excite us.
I took a photo of grass coming through the snow the other day on 6x6 portrayals film as well. I thought it a trite when I took it, but I like the shot. So Im glad not the only one that thinks these things are worth capturing. The last sheep photo is amazing. The shape of the trees, the line of sheep, and negative space really work well together.
Good to hear you are feeling better. Rock on Tommy, well Tom.
NIce video Thomas. When I was feeling down, my doctor told me to "walk in green places". It works! And, if I can come home with some photos, that's a great bonus.
I love sheep, and I love that image of the sheep in the snow, fantastic!
I've been watching your videos for years, and just wanted to say thanks - your channel is probably my favourite on youtube and your videos always inspire me to go outside and bring my camera, even if I don't feel like it, and also to just enjoy nature. You're a great photographer and seem like a great person too!
Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability Thomas. Not an easy thing to do. Yes lockdown continue to have a profound impact. It’s definitely OK to recognise it. As always, a pleasure to view your videos and learn. Thanks for being so generous with your guidance and inspire good photography.
Look after yourself Thomas, Take a breath, take in the beauty that surrounds you and most of all take time to look inside and see that you have a great talent and I don't mean just your photography mate I mean your connection with nature and also with your viewers.
Couldn‘t agree more with your statements about the outdoors and how nature affects our mood and mind! Love your on-location videos, especially with analog film - the pictures reflect the honesty and calm of your videos very well - not everything has to be super epic-HDR-gigapixel like. A simple beautiful well composed image outways all „modern“ superlatives! Keep it going and good light!
Oh Thomas, the Photo with the sheeps is so gorgeous, bravo!!

Nature is the best place to be during this lockdown. Keep it up Thomas. Also I love that last shot with the sheep. Much love 💕
i like your movies so much. especially your way of commenting on them. very honest and authentic. I look forward to your contributions every time.
I'm from Ottawa Canada and know snow and I think there is beauty everywhere we just have to look for it.. Love your videos Thomas..as they say keep your chin up.. you're doing good and you will come out of this better for it.. cheers
Thanks for always saying what most of us are feeling even if we haven’t been able to put it into words yet. Your videos have been such a blessing and pulled me out of some dark places and for that I’m grateful!
Brilliant film and I know it’s a while since you made it but I can see that last shot being a centrepiece shot for the Farmers Union, absolutely fantastic shot, thank you for sharing
"- I just shoot 3 frames of sheep". Cracked me up in a big laugh. :D
the last capture with the sheep is spectacular!!!
Love the dancing twigs. The out of focus one to the right was either late to the party or went to get drinks at the bar.
I note you do exactly what you should do when shooting these images - lock the mirror up, then fire the shutter. Problem though, as I see it, is that most viewers will not know the first sound they hear is the mirror flipping up, and the following faint "click" sound being the actual shutter firing. Perhaps just a word to your viewers identifying the mirror locking up, and then the shutter firing with the cable release. Being an old Hasselblad shooter, it just warms my heart to see you putting this fine rig to good work.
Really like your episodes with the Hasselblad and film. I laughed when you were preparing to “shoot some sheep in a field “ and all the sheep started walk away from the frame behind you! But not to worry, that final shot was a winner.
