This demonstration was a good way of teaching his students to always question what they were learning. The students were clearly used to solving polynomial equations using division, so they overlooked the fact that they were dividing by 0 to get a+b=b. Always try and look deeper when you are learning something new, especially if you feel there is something contradictory in the background. A good example is when I learned about the formal definition of uniform continuity in Real Analysis. I understood the concept of continuity really well, and felt so comfortable with it I overlooked a lot of the important differences between it and uniform continuity. It took me a long time to fully understand uniform continuity as a result.

This is actually pretty simple though. In the 4th step, you're basically saying that a.0=b.0, then you cancel out 0 to make them "equal to each other". This is pretty much forbidden to do

no, hes just an idiot. 1=2 and a=b cant be compared. the number 1, and the number 2 are different numbers, but they are both constants. constants and variables have very different natures from each other. when you multiply constants, so like 2 and 3, u will get 6. when u multiply 2c times 3c, u get 6c squared. the answer he got at the end is called undefined. i know he knows that 2 doesn’t equal 1, but he failed too outsmart math. he failed to recognize that the word undefined is for anomalies like having numbers that don’t equal each other at the end of solving an equation

I loved every second of this.

The coolest division by zero usage I’ve seen was by my flatmate, who was doing his PHD in mathematics at the time. I gave him a math problem, he did some calculations and after some work he got a contradiction, he then said, I must have divided by 0, found the only possible division by 0 in his calculation, and proceeded to solve the problem with the knowledge that this variable was 0.

This is just a backwards way of doing things. If you do your check and it pops out as the 2 = 1 you have to put the line through the equal signs. It shows that the proof you want doesn't work. It shows you did something wrong. This is a backwards way of showing and teaching kids that they need to add more qualifiers or constraints. In other words, taking common sense out of it and making someone say, you didn't add that or this so what I did is true. No, you are just trying to fast talk what is previous unwritten rules (or written so long ago that they are just known).

@@Amir......... Sure. It's explained in the video but when I cancel a-b on both sides I am dividing by a-b but (and this is a big BUTT, not my butt, my butt's small!) a-b=0 so that is not allowed.
