    The colder things get the less resistance. That is why superconductors need an environment temperature of absolute zero. The reason the cold affects EV’s is a characteristic of the battery, nothing to do with the cold raising resistance.

    When an electric car will run from Denver to St. Louis with one stop in central Kansas for "lunch and a charge", I will consider one. Until then, I'll drive a hybrid while saving enough to get a new Impala (and the Dimocrats may kiss my backside until then).

    WEF is devaluating eveything that you own. They will force you out of your ICE car and force you to buy an EV that will be 10x the price for performance, and when you give up you will ride public transit.

    You have no idea how the chemistry has changed in 10 years. And by the way, insurance companies have found that EVs have fewer problems than petrol cars, and they burn less often, proportionally.

    @@btn73 Fancy having to stop to fill up 12 times during a 1200 mile journey..... I drive a vauxhall Corsa Diesel, which returns 70mpg, with a real world 650 miles between fill ups....a fill up takes 5 minutes. The chances of it spontaneaously combusting are NIL....I could go on and on..... There has to come a time when EV pervs just admit they are a pile of sh*t except for short distance commuting, without carrying weight in the form of passengers & luggage and supposing warm, dry weather. As regards `insurance companies`.....I think you will find premiums in EVs are doubling & tripling in the wake of how expensive they are if you crash or if the thing suddenly erupts.

    Small correction: resistance doesn't increase at lower temperatures, it actually decreases. That's why superconductors run at cryogenic temperatures. But lithium batteries don't like the cold. The colder it gets, the slower they can accept charge. Until ultimately if they get too cold they won't accept any charge at all. Then you'll spend quite a while heating the batteries before you can start charging them.

    It does not work that way. All ev have battery pre conditioning. Itv uses the battery energy to preheat the battery to optimal charging temperature by heating it (cold)or cooling it (hot) Done wile the car is driven before reaching the chargers station. Take only few minutes while driving. . If no pre conditioning is dome then the battery can draw less than 6 amp for about an hr in order to slowly heat the battery to optimal charge rate temperature. Only fools do not do that (like in Chicago)

    If one follows Tesla's guidance to plug in at home every night then the car will prep the battery for the departure time you can set. There is no wait for warming the battery when one has all night.

    True. Inverse proportional.. the lower the temp, the higher the current through a given size wire via the lesser resistance at lower temps. Scotty's a mechanic not an Engineer. However he's spot on everywhere else here.

    Here's something a good friend of mine who owns an insurance company told me. EV's are driving rates through the roof because every single thing that brakes on them is absurdly expensive. One example; A guy had a wiring issue which caused the who car to die. This guy was parked on a second level of a parking garage in the city. When these cars are dead, you can't just put them in neutral and roll them out. They had to have a tow company drag it out, locked in gear in order to get it onto a dolly. Once in the shop, they needed to replace a wire harness leading into the battery which cost.......... $5,000 in total. Another repair he told me about was a $500 repair on a chipped windshield on one of these things. This is in the St. Louis, MO area, not exactly the most expensive area to live in the country, although it's getting there. Imagine what a typical fender bender is going to do to the insurance market with these money buckets on the road.

    And my “concept” BMW i3 they’ve been making for 10 years has been perfect for 2 1/2 years. BMW kept calling saying I had to bring it in for the 1 1/2 year inspection. Why? Cause they wanted to charge BMW for SOMETHING to make the sale of the car worth their time😏 Apparently Scotty and service departments don’t like them. I was told they’ll have to lay off mechanics and support staff if electric vehicles take over.

    Your misinformed on insurance. My son was driving a POS 2012 Hundai Elantra with 160k miles on it bought a 2021 Duel motor model S ..his insurance went up 3 dollars a year

    In 1940 , Europe at war, my mother regularly took a bus which had a gas generator attached to its rear. This big stove with a proud chimney was fed with burning logs of wood and it reliably produced a gas (Holzgas in German) which fed the traditional engine of the bus. It worked well as substitute for liquid fuels. Scotty, with his uncanny discerning eye, would appreciate the esthetics of the contraption and would suggest such a reliable backpack on Teslas in the winter.

    What made it more efficient - - they occasionally had to stop and stoke the chamber with fresh wood, and the hot coals dumped into the burner. The previous "fuel" became the heat source for the next charge. Wood pyrolysis.

    Another problem that's not addressed: In areas prone to hurricanes such as Florida, they shut down the power grid. I guess they'll have to hitch a ride in an evacuation zone with a car that runs on gasoline.....

    @@darktest If "you" were so intelligent then you'd know most houses in the US with solar panels are still tied to the grid and, therefore, also get no power when the grid goes down. Additionally, a large portion of EV owners (about 20%) can't or don't charge at home (such as EV owners that live in an apartment or condo). What about them? They can't install solar panels, genius.

    In the 90's I was an auto insurance adjuster and hated Saab's. Parts took forever to get, cars were delayed in the shops for months. We would often total them out when we factored in the high cost of parts, low resale value and months of rental car fees. Surprisingly most people were glad to see them go but we not so thrilled with how little value they retained.

    Well OEMs have been tampering with the EPA numbers, by providing cars with special software to pass the test. The news appeared yesterday. The polution caused by some of the largest ICE cars manufacturers far exceeds the polution of full countries (this is a different news)

    The only agenda here is Scotty. Driving an EV is different then driving an ICE. it has pros and cons. He only talks about the cons, and is a hater when it comes to EVs. He acts like you always get the estimated range for your ICE. You don't. Especially if you aren't keeping up on all the maintence (that EVs don't have). The agencies realize they need to come up with better standards. I am not a car guy, and know they've talked about it openly. There is no secret agenda. They only ever test so many cars every year of every type.. They listen to whatever the manufacturer states, and test what they can. Some EVs get even more range then listed. But you can't help stupid. I just find it funny some of you think there is an agenda when there isn't. Oh by the way all manufacturers get the credits or subsidize. ICE cars, and the entire Fossil Fuel industry do. So stop using your ignorance as an excuse.

    I haven't had any maintenance since June 2020. It cost 1/3 to 1/4 as much as gas in LA. It seldom gets below 40° LA. And I charge at home 90% of the time. Know your situation.

    That is not the point. EVs are being "oversold" as it relates to equivalent fuel economy. Your "scam" obtained it's energy from somewhere, no? Coal likely? Isn't the intent to "reduce CO2" based on the amazing efficiency offered? Efficiency we now learn is make believe. No one questions they are capable modes of transport. Just not the "green machine" promised.

    All airliner turbo-fan-jet engines have built-in alternators so the engines will run EVEN IF the plane loses power. There is also an APU engine in the tail, and they can drop-down a generator if all else fails, that is spun by the high-speed air, even if the plane is gliding. If only BEVs were that smart. My Focus can be push-started, it's a manual : )

    I went to the grocery store yesterday. Saw a line of about 15 Tesla chargers. It was towards the evening. Each charger had an electric car parked in it, look like all Teslas. In each driver seat was a person watching their phone. I think it’s ridiculous. My time is much more valuable than that.

    Why you didn’t see was people catching up on emails and calls or going grocery shopping.. all things you’d legally can’t do while driving. You also didn’t see that 90 of these cars charge at home while they sleep and unlike you they have a full tank every day. Charging at these chargers is rare.

    Further, most Tesla drivers stay in their car because there usually isn't enough time to do other things before the car is ready. They get enough charge to continue and get on their way, opening a charger for the next person. Given the options, 5 minutes spent in the car on the phone sure beats the 8 minutes holding a gas nozzle in whatever the weather happens to be and breathing in fumes. The longest I've had to wait for a Supercharger spot to open up was 2 minutes, and I was the third car in line at an 8-stall charger. 2 minute wait plus a 7 minute charge still had me on my way in less than 10 minutes. In the span of 25 minutes, over 20 cars were charged by 8 chargers. The original group all arrived during my 10-minute drive to the charger (viewable on the in-car map), 2 left on my arrival, letting the two waiting cars to charge. The 3rd left shortly after, allowing me to charge, and the rest of the original group left during my charge. They were replaced by a whole new group, who all left about 5-6 minutes after I did. How did I know? The pin on the car's map was showing 8 stalls available when I checked it a few miles down the road. I doubt that a similar-sized gas station has that rate of turnover. Per my own charge stats for 2023, 72% of my charging was done at home, 14% at work, 8% at Superchargers, and 6% at public Level 2 stations (opportunity charging). 86% of my charging happened at one of two places I'm regularly at regardless of what vehicle I drive.

    I drove a Tesla for a couple months and I found multiple Sheetz locations had supercharging stations at them. I thought that was the perfect place for them; a place that’s open 24/7 that you can go inside at anytime, day or night and has bathrooms, convenience items and food.

    Not just evs, but so called normal cars have trouble in winter these days too. Tow driver from finland here and we just had a record breaking amount of work during january because modern cars dont last in -30 celsius. And i dont mean just battery problems. Adblue systems, shitty starters, etc just stop working in cold.

    You do realize as a tow driver that at some extreme temperature point, no car (ICE or EV) will function, right? Thing is, the temps in Chicago were only around -16 celsius when all these EV owners got stranded. Nowhere near the -30 celsius temperature when "some" ICE cars will start experiencing "some" functionality issues. And you only need to look at many of the news articles and YT content (many from EV owners themselves) lately to know that these EV sub-freezing weather issues aren't just exclusive to Chicago during this most recent polar freeze. BTW, -30 celsius is extremely rare in places where most humans live "AND" operate motorized vehicles. That said, yes, motorists in ICE cars often do get stranded in winter weather, but usually that's due to poor road conditions caused by snow and/or ice--issues than can often be overcome by winter tires, snow chains, 4WD/AWD, etc. It's rare for an ICE vehicle to get stranded in -16 celsius because the temperature is affecting its functionality.

    In Toronto Canada, we get as low as -40Celsius with windchill - so the additives from the gas pumps make even the oldest cars work fine. Japanese cars are the best, but even Diesels are fine here in Canada.

    I don't do well in -30 C either forget the car! I have experienced colder, I used to work at a grocery store, and we kept our freezer vault, well the gauge went down to -40 F also -40 C and the needle rested on that pin at the bottom. I would stand just at the door, look for what I needed, run grab it and run back out.

    ​@@jessewynne8193Regenerative braking is exactly why EVs have very long mile ranges, but those ranges don't actually translate properly on the highway because of regenerative braking. So when you are driving in a city and you are constantly braking, they get back so much of their energy that they are way more efficient per mile, where on the highway they have to continuously spend energy to keep moving and fight drag.

    Scotty, years ago Top Gear tested 3 diesel sedans to see how many miles per gallon they could achieve. The results were incredible. Why can’t American built diesel cars achieve 60 mpg with our diesels??

    Every once in a while, I forget to plug my cell phone in. I still make it to work (45 minute drive), charging my cell phone along the way. If my cars low fuel warning light comes on, I can make it to the next gas station along my route. I have never had to wait more than one or two cars to get to a pump and rarely have to even wait for a pump. If I drove an EV and forgot to plug it in at night, I wouldn't make it to work on time the next morning.

    You're aware most EVs now have 200-300 miles of range right? Most Americans average 40 miles of driving or less in a day, and modern EV owners often only need to charge once a week. You absolutely do not need to plug in most EVs every day.

    If you drove an EV and forgot to plug it in at night, it would be a good idea to keep your phone charged, or have a spare power source for it, to have phone reminders to plug your car in, thus saving all the gas station trips you would otherwise need to make without an EV. Soon, wireless charging at home will be a thing, and you can just pull in over the charging mat and let the car figure out when to charge. Good luck!

    @@jojag5you may not know many EV owners. My company installs residential chargers in Oregon and California. The vast majority of them require charging every- or every other evening. The average mileage of American drivers is ~ 33 miles per day. In cold months that requires an EV to be charged almost every evening.

    Yes, at home, overnight, it doesn't matter if the vehicle spends 30 minutes heating the battery. Plus when charged at home the vehicle can be warm and ready every morning. Tesla provides a timer with "be ready at X:XX" for that purpose. Also if one has an event in iPhone calendar with destination set the Tesla can automatically prepare for that with no other interaction.

    @@jamesbekman7400 where I live, the cost of electricity is 73% lower than the national average (Wenatchee, Washington which has two hydroelectric dams on each side). The average person drives less than 200 per day. The average person owns a home to charge at. The average person spends tons of money a year on gas, oil, spark plugs, typical engine maintenance. To say it’s a “scam” is false. I’m only talking about Tesla as all other EV’s suck. Where I live people WANT EV’s.

    Why don't you ask how much Tesla owners actually pay to charge their cars and how far they can go for the money? You know there are some Tesla owners who don't pay anything. Sometimes it's a free perk from their job or where they live and there are some places that let you charge for free. There are also some people that are off grid and have solar and a battery wall and also charge their cars for free. Just charging an EV overnight from home is cheaper than any combustion engine on the market, there's no question about that.

    Also even if it did drain the battery flat, it's not an exclusively EV problem. There have been several recent recalls from different manufacturers' gas vehicles regarding abnormally high 12V battery discharge due to fancy new computerized auxiliary systems, leaving your car dead in the lot... And of course, those are the carmakers self-respecting enough to make a recall or update over such an issue, many cars just have battery drain issues and they... never get fixed Regardless, if this does happen to you, the good news is that starting an EV or an ICE car with a dead 12V is a very similar process. And some electric cars even DO have an easy quick-access point for the 12V that can be used for starting, not all of them are annoyingly buried deep in the bowels of the car.

    @@paperburn Where are your receipts? Sure, Sentry Mode might put some additional strain on a 12V battery (as all auto electronic devices tend to do) but the majority of the power requirement for Sentry Mode comes from the lithium-ion battery pack. Even Tesla owner's manuals state as much. Unless, of course, you know something that Tesla engineers don't.

    Like in the States, Australian distances make EVs unviable they're OK if you only do city crap 50 km each way, but to drive Melbourne to Sydney (880 km) is a 9 hr ICE trip including a refuelling x1 but in a comparable BMW ICE VS EV test run a reporter took 15 hrs because of the recharges. I can't warrant what is effectively a 2 day drive for a 3 day trip.

    I only see one time battery preconditioning light on my Bolt EUV. Temperature was 11°C. Rage droped 25% by using the hested seats, and heted steering wheel. NO Ac since the car has resistant heat and not a het pump.

    I have 2 Tesla's, model 3 & Y and I have never experienced anything in this video. Wife and I drive less than 100 miles per day and our setup works perfect for us. We charge every 2 or 3 days at home 240v chargers and it cost $5 to fill up each battery.

    In EV can work just fine in a normal climate as long as you don't want to drive it in the coldest of days. Like honestly, they are not bad at second or third vehicles, especially for local commutes and around town driving. But they are not meant to replace gas cars and should never be touted as a replacement for gas cars simply because they are less efficient in highway driving and charging times will always be an issue.

    During 2023 several manufacturers offered EV at lower price than comparable ICE vehicles even withou the Fed credits. Hyunday and Kia did, Tesla does it too. For 2024 battery prices will drop by 50% making it easier to sell ev wal lower than ICE cars MSRP.@@johncameron2241

    Elon and Tesla hired a huge crew to subdue any complaints over their own customers finding out they only get half of the advertised mileage on a full charge and also parts just breaking down on them, vital, important parts that can even harm you and your family. They then went around and blamed it on their own customer, saying its their fault when they know full well majority of the time it is because of Tesla's bad quality control.

    I don't always agree with you but I DO agree with you about EV's. I know someone who has a Tesla and a F150 Lightning. He had to have 2 different chargers installed in his garage. He drove his Lightning cross country to watch a game from Dallas to Orlando to Buffalo. He actually spent more time finding a working charger and charging than he did on the Road. He's stuck in a long term contract and couldn't sell it for half of what he owes for it. Literally took 24 + hours to charge at a dealership in NY ! Loves to drive it but hates owning it. I'm a mechanic of 45 years. Tried to tell him. By the time we catch up with the necessary infrastructure for charging and manufacturers get real about driving distance they're just a waste of big bucks. Cost more to insure too ! I'll stick to my trusty 2011 RAM and 2013 Subaru.

    Scotty .. I live in Canada and it was -57C with the windchill recently (about -70F) likely about -40C/-40F and hmm, not an EV to be seen. Why ? Cause they suck in cold weather. Here the Toyota dealer told me that they are selling almost all hybrids and no EV's.

    I drive an EV. There are EVs everywhere still when it’s in the negatives. Hybrids are selling more bc more people are renting. It’s best to charge in a garage and extra range from a plug in hybrid is very nice. You’re putting a weird spin on this

    In 2015 some PHD did his research for it. I remember numbers were like this “to charge Tesla Model S85D from 0-100%, by burning coal at the plant and accounting for losses, you will emit as much CO2 as burning a 240 litres of diesel” and that gets you supposedly 370 miles. Ever wonder how far will a car go on 240 litres of diesel??? Hint, much, much, much further…

    Hyundai just pattented in the US a solid state battery that is presurized. Has double the energy density, charges faster than Lithium batterieres and cost half of a lithium battery. Wonder if they will make a new SS battery plant in the US. Hyundai have their own technology making ev since 1991.

    Gasoline is made by reforming waste material in a petrochemical facility. Gasoline consumption has been declining as ev sales go up. Motor oil consumption will start to drop too..

    Oil companies spend NO MONEY on toxic waste disposal. - - they put it ALL into the asphalt and tar, our roads are paved with toxic waste !! So much so that when a school needs to pave parking lots and playgrounds, they request a special "clean" batch of asphalt the children can play on.

    I have had a kia ev6 for over two years and have loved it. We mostly charge in our garage but even on road trips we haven''t had a problem. If I couldn't charge at home I would not buy one. We get 300mi in the summer and 270 in the winter. on the highway we only get about 230 but thats enough for us.

    @@N4HHE I have never studied Norway's climate, but being right along the coast, I suspect that it doesn't get particularly cold there. Getting an old "non-computerized" vehicle started below -20C or colder was quite the accomplishment. Now, its never a problem unless you have a poorly maintained POS.

    I leased a Tesla just to see how it is, you are right I left sentry mode on when I went on a cruise it was down to 51% from 80% after two days. I was able to shut it off from the cruise ship. Anyway it got in a bad accident, lost all power. I could not get into it at the junkyard because the port you plug into was destroyed. Managed to pull the emergency release from the vented window using more junk from the junk yard to get the door open. Anyway yes, probably not the right move… it’s likely totaled but I could not even get a shop to give me an estimate on it!

    VW 3.0L Turbo Diesel cars like the Q7 and Cayenne in the 2010's could easily go 600+ miles on a tank. Fill it up to 100% in 5-10 minutes and off you go.

    I spend about 15 seconds filling my car with electricity every 200 miles. Plug it in, walk into the house, unplug it in the morning with a full battery and I didn't have to stand around in a stinky petrol station. Twice a year I charge on the public network and do that while doing other things, like eating, going to the toilet, visiting somewhere on holiday. I spend way less time charging than I ever did filling up.

    Why do you reject Tesla? It is a worldwide leader on ev technology and it is a US company. Would you prefer that the leading ev maker were from China. They willtake the wold 10 to places on ev sales if not for Tesla. Legacy automalers willbecome a shadow of what they are today by 2028.

    I worked for Cavana for a couple years. When a electric came in dead or died on the lot we would connect a fully charged jump box and lower the hood as much as we could. We'd get them on or off the truck that way. I hate electrics...all of them.

    It baffles me why they don't at least put some solar cells on EVs to help charge them. People might be a little less worried about being totally stranded somewhere. At least you might have a chance to go far enough to get to a charging station AND extend range. The car could literally charge while you are parked for the day outside.

    With my ICE, no range worries. I don't even think about it. When I get below 1/4 tank, I stop at next corner and fill in 5 minutes.. With ICE, I understand you have to start considering the next 'fill' as you leave the charger....

    I drive a Toyota hybrid and i get between 60 and 70 mpg (UK), every day, the 12V battery is under the seat but there is also a jump start connector under the bonnet so if my 12V battety for some reason goes flat I can jump start the car without taking the seats out😊

    Four years driving my Tesla Model 3 problem free. Zero maintenance and $8.00/mo in electricity costs. Faster than 99% of cars on the road. Drives perfectly at 32 BELOW zero Fahrenheit. Nuff said

    Yes Scotty and in all the photos of charging stations I’ve never seen restroom facilities, food, a coffee or soft drink bar, highway maps , a windshield wash bucket or a tire pressure station. I guess you have to still have to find a gas station to take advantage of those services. Haha!

    I have watched some KZread videos where they show trips in EV's the chargers are often installed in the back of a existing parking lot. People will walk to a nearby store for food and take a break. Not exactly a safe location. Some of the chargers will not fast charge due to technical problems.

    A couple of things: 1. Resistance of most conductors goes up and down with temperature. The resistance of the battery goes up with decreasing temperature, however, because of the electrolyte conduction chemistry. That is why Teslas could not charge in cold weather. The batteries must first be heated before charging. What is strange is that the supercharger has plenty of power to heat the battery, 2. Electronic equipment can be routinely designed to work down to -65 degrees F. This is not a technology issue.

    What nobody talks about is all the carbon emissions that go into EVs, from raw ore in a mine, to finished vehicles driving out of the factory onto a diesel car hauler to get to a dealer. And that doesn't count the additional carbon emissions that it takes to generate the electricity to charge the EV, or to build the charging infrastructure so that you _can_ charge it. I think it was KZreadr JerryRigEverything who added it all up, once. Over the life of the vehicle, from raw material to recycling at the end of life, EV's don't even "break even" in carbon emissions. All they do is "shuffle" where the carbon is emitted so that consumers and law makers feel good about it.

    You do not get 60-70 mpg on average. Maybe when you coast. I owned 2 Prius in the past. Very good car but 45-50 is reasonable as estimate without using extreme unrealistic measures. I got close to 60 once but it was not normal driving.

    NEVER BUY AN EV. My brother has a Tesla. He lives in Orange County. We were going up to Los Angeles the next day, which is about a 50 mile drive. He had to charge it to at least 80% the night before, which took like 30 min. All these constant planning & charging. It's a headache to me.

    Austin TX to Joshua tree cross country? Try northwest CT all the way to Moab UT. It was like 2400 miles one way. I was driving a little 115 hp 2009 Hyundai accent back in 2012, got almost 40mpg on the highway. I had to fill up my less than 10gal tank under 7 times to get all the way from CT to UT(I know obviously you can go further for a cross-country trip). Point is... that's like a 1/3-1/2 country trip mentioned in the video. If anything, that makes your point even more valid.

The batteries weren't rechargeable so it was only for rich people who could physically have the battery replaced every 50 miles. 1867 the rechargeable battery became a thing and by 1872 the cars could be recharged. However the costs were huge and still cars were only for rich people. As the combustion engine became widely established at the turn of the century; the car became slightly more affordable and range was exponentially increased. Once Henry Ford created the assembly line; the cars were available for a mass market price and gasoline infrastructure started to be built everywhere. Before this there were charging stations inside of parking garages and such and people had to leave their cars to charge all day. Thomas Edisons & Henry Fords biggest failure was trying to create an EV version of the model T. They almost both went bankrupt doing it and Thomas Edison lost his Virginia lab when his EV model T prototype burst into flames. Ironically there is nothing out there about Nikola Tesla being a proponent of EVs and he is known for popularizing AC energy rather than DC which was Edisons thing. Since AC can travel further across wires and has less power loss.

    One gallon of gasoline contains 33.4 kwH. Max energy density of best batteries is 1 kwH per gallon. and that's a major problem with ev's.
