    Cheetahs clock in a bit faster at 65-76, but can only run that speed for a couple hundred yards. These Pleistocene leftovers can run 55-65 or so (and I believe the lighter females even a bit faster) for miles and, slowing down just a bit, can still keep a rapid clip for tens of miles. A really fantastic creature. When you're looking at one, you're essentially looking tens of thousands of years in North America's past.

    Interesting you should say that! You see, the reason pronghorns run so ridiculously fast is because, up till about 11,000 years ago, they DID have to outrun cheetahs. I'm referring to American Cheetahs, which were more closely related to pumas than African cheetahs, but were very similar. It's weird because I was JUST reading about American Cheetahs a few minutes ago, which is what prompted me to look up pronghorns, which is where I saw your incredibly fortuitous comment!

    Thank You! I too have witnessed their great speed, but wasn't clocking anything. One source does have them hitting a maximum of 70 mph and they are known to cruise around 45-50 mph for miles on end. Many people are not aware the pronghorn evolved to escape the American Cheetah and long distance running hunters lie Wolves so they had too be both endurant and have an afterburner when necessary. Also if I am not mistaken the Cincinnati Zoo has clocked one of it's Cheetahs in upper 70's on a test.

  • @AreolaGrande94
    @AreolaGrande947 жыл бұрын

    gorgeous footage but they aren't even close to top speed here. it's amazing to see this because it sort of shows adaptive evolution. Thompson's gazelles reach 50 or so mph and they evolved to be able to get away from African cheetahs. One can sort of surmise that pronghorns co-evolved with American cheetahs and run faster than thompson's.... theoretically we can make a guess that the larger American cheetah must have been slightly faster than it's African cousins.

There could not be more different hunters within Felidae than the cougar and cheetah. There's also the GLARING fact that pronghorns don't share the same types of habitats. Animals can't even compare when it comes to the insect world. For example if an ant was human size it would have a top speed of 400 miles an hour. To put this in perspective even the fastest formula one car wouldn't stqnd a chance against this human sized ant.

    Exactly, these pronghorn aren't special or amazing! As creatures get farther, you realize how slow both humans and animals truly are! The trophy goes to insects, not pronghorn! Insects are lucky, reaching such high speeds.

    NA cheetahs lived in diverse habitats, including those with mountain goats, and there is no direct evidence that they hunted like today's cheetah. What we do have are reports of pronghorns racing cars and cutting in front at top speed. This sounds a lot like sexual selection in action with the sexiest pronghorn being the fastest pronghorn.

Needless to say, the bullet won and I started eating her last night. I grilled up some more of her at lunch today. On Friday morning I plan to see if one of her sisters can outrun my .308.

    You aren't familiar with the contemporary literature regarding the Pronghorn's population and range in the United States. The Pronghorn once numbered a mere 13,000 around the beginning of the 20th century. Today, they number between 650,000-1,000,000 in the US. Hunting is of course needed to manage the population and the ecological balance, and because of the strict limitations placed on the hunting of the species by State Agencies over the last century, the Pronghorn has recovered to a point where it faces no threat of extirpation in any of its localized habitats despite the increase in human settlement and barriers to migration such as fencing and roads.
