Prong Collar Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The prong collar is a great tool for dog training, but like any tool it can be misused or even abused. In this very short video I'll point out some very common mistakes that people make with the prong collar, also called a pinch collar. Most often these mistakes are made unknowingly, so I hope you'll share this video with anyone.
I always like to use top quality gear, and you'll find links to my favorite gear on my site:

They also sell small attachments that make it so it may not fall down as much and can connect to another collar.

Robert's content literally saved my rescued Mal. Now, I have two Mals, which I am totally besotted with. It's Roberts content that allows me to be successful in their rehoming and reeducation. It requires constant work and dedication for success. I absolutely love seeing Goofy. I still fondly remember the video that had him doing some demonstrations in a ring, he hadn't performed any "French Ring, IPA" (I think) for many years, yet he was so excited about working again and he was amazing. Thank you for your patience with the idiots and your ability to help so many dogs (and people). Ps: I had to import my prongs, Martin gales to the UK, they're even banning E-collars too, It's like they don't want you to help dogs, just PTS dogs that don't conform to the idiotic positive only methodology.

Great info. Love prongs and the info the dog receives from it. My Corso heels like a pro. I only ever have to give slight tugs or pops for information. Another thing to mention is the gauge/size of the prongs. For any dog over 100 +lbs I'd usually recommend a heavier 3.0+ gauge versus the 2.25mm shown here. Most dogs, especially sensitive dogs will only need a 2.25. But for bigger, thick fur, stubborn dogs, a larger gauge may help them feel it more. It won't have as much "bite" as a 2.25 though, so keep that in mind. I recently went from a 2.25 HS to a 3.2 as we needed to change stimulus and he just wasn't feeling the small prongs anymore since he's 125 lbs.

I use one for my pittie, I use a leash on his harness & the prong collar by hand. My dog is the perfect height for me to use the collar by hand when correcting, or I need him close to me. Using both has made it easier for milo to understand the behaviors that I don't want from him, and now I don't have to use it much. He still reacts to dogs behind fences but it's getting better. Best tool for dog training is patience.

Been using a herm springer prong daily for 4 years now, never had it break or show any signs of doing so but it is good to know that this is a possibility. In your opinion is this normally due to human error fitting or just equipment aging over time? Thanks for the informative video as always!

Prong plus e collar duo was a life saver, so cheap compared to all the money I wasted os "positive training" friendly gear that never got me anywhere. Never got the second collar to go with the prong, because we always have a e collar to ensure the recall in all situations.

How would you respond to people like Ivan Balabanov who say its better to have the prong collar loose so that its only tight when preassure is applied? I certainly don't think Ivans dogs would have scarring/irritation on their necks from the prong collar rubbing around while its loose.

Can we please suggest how do fit a prong collar on a long neck dog like the pinschers? In order for it to stay on close to the ears not sliding down I have to make it very tight. Otherwise it would slide down of the neck.

The prong does not always need to be high and tight that is a common mistake people do. Some dogs are too sensitive for the higher placement so middle-low neck would work better with the dogs needs. As long as its snug any placement is fine

That advice is self-contradictory; if the prong pressure on the left side of neck is to get the dog to move to the right then it SWITCHES to making the dog resist, not comply...then tell: AT WHAT DISTANCE from touching your leg does the dog convert the signal from the intended direction, to the opposite?
