I read a story somewhere, I forgot where. There was a girl who wrote a comic and her friend illustrated it for her. She went to the closest LCS shop and asked, "Hey can you sell my book?" The LCS replied no. She wasn't too surprised as it was an independent book with little marketing behind. So, she signed a few copies of the book and gave it to the LCS. The LCS had read it and called her back asking, "hey, we'll sell your copies." She sold 20 of her comic that week. I don't know where I read it, but it just popped into my mind.

I am the son of a peruvian comic maker, he made a very rush decision and printed approximately 5k comics of a 5 part series so 25k in total, he didn't know how to distribute them and now they are collecting dust in a storage room, any idea on how to approach this situation? They are in really good condition but they are there for 2 years now and it's a hard topic for the family.

What I would do in his situation: 1. Create a website. 2. Have (build) a social media platform on Facebook and Instagram about your comics. 3. Contact various podcasters on KZread who interviews independent comicbook publishers. 4. Create local interests in my local area by seeing if I could get "interviews " on a local radio, newspaper "local interests stories". 5. See if I can set up a distribution deal with Diamond Comics Distribution: yes it is expensive but you must leverage that with the fact that it is MAJOR national exposure. 6. Identify the people most likely to buy or be interested in the published book. This is what is meant by "a niche market". Who/What type of people will buy this Comic? 7. Join every comicbook group on Facebook that promotes independent comicbook publishers.

Once you know how to lay out a comic book script it will help you make the transition from your book into a comic book. Think of your book as the idea and figure out how you want to disect it into short bite sized comics, then write page by page (panel by panel) scripts for each part (each comic book). Hope that helps, Best of luck with it.

Hell with it, I am just tossing my comic book in the trash. Finding a publisher is impossible, and self-publishing sounds like too much of a nightmare and a headache. And I'd get screwed in the end anyway. Everybody makes money off my book except me. Oh, well, I tried.

@@fullsailuniversity I got screwed over by Newman Springs Publishing. I love the little children's book idea that I came up with. All they did was take my publishing fee and left me. I used to see it on Amazon so I know it sold, but, I got paid nothing. I was hoping to sell enough to make another book and so on. But, apparently my book sold only one or two copies despite them claiming it will be everywhere. I have no way of knowing because only Newman Springs knows for sure, and they are not going to tell me. Then, they want me to pay them another $100 for them to continue to do nothing for my book! This whole experience has made me very leery and cynical about publishers. Now I am happy with a fun comic book I just finished, hoping to make it a series, but, I'm at a dead end. I don't like how everything has gone digital, the traditional books are not as popular. But, thanks for the encouragement!

That's awful! We're sorry you had to experience something like that. With the right marketing, anything is possible. It's clear you have a lot of love and passion for this story, so we hope you'll be able to get your series out to the world!🧡

@@fullsailuniversity I was browsing the internet and the competition is fierce, there are millions of people who want to get published, and the only thing I run into is the self-publishing/vanity press garbage. What happened to the publishers that loved your work, published your work, sold your books, and paid YOU? Apparently, they don't exist anymore. Now this digital stuff only adds to the difficulty.

@@fullsailuniversity The individual floppies vs the complete graphic novel. The best route for me (at the moment) is the get the 20-24 page issues out digitally, shop a couple of freebies, then print the complete story arc as a trade when its done. I wonder did they cover having a team in other videos? Maybe someone that handles the business end, while someone else focuses on the book.
