Prometheus - David in the Orrery

This is a segment from the 2012 movie Prometheus that I will analyse on my blog for my UAL ED CMPT course, this video is simply to be embedded in the blog as something for an examiner to view and then read my analysis

The one thing that really just makes me smile is the overall tone of this scene vs. the tone of the engineers in the hologram. The scene plays this up like an incredible insight into a new realm of knowledge, yet the body language of the engineers suggest all they're doing is going about another normal day at their place of work. Illustrates how what is fantastical to us is simultaneously mundane to someone else.

Stellar cartography has a certain kind of beauty. Replace Psycho David with Commander Data and you get a completely different perspective. They could have taken this franchise in a different direction that would have had many sequels but now it has ignored Alien canon, and become predictable and lackluster.

This can also be applied to the whole concept of ETs in regards to our planet, they could be so far advanced from us that many of them have passed our solar system countless times and just see us as completely insignificant. Or some have visited us but have such advanced technology they can either disguise themselves to look like us, or just have some really cool stealth technology which we just dont pick up on. Or some of them have visited us many times which is where some of the stories of UFO encounters, abductions and crop circles come from. All of these ideas have been explored in pop culture and movies, which is why they're mostly just not taken seriously by most people in the mainstream of society.

Huh, well that's how fans usually react to new things. I say we should just wait to see what the directors are gonna do, too much in one movie or repetition can mean disaster for a franchise, first we get the introduction to the engineers and then in Covenant we get to see the origins of the xenomorph species... a delicate pacing is in order to get the most out of things and so far it is very logical, Here's hoping the predators will get involved sometime later... I really like those guys

Yes they could have. I believe/know this is what Shaw had wanted to do, but David has his own plans for "creation". You blame Covenant, but how else is the story to progress and what do you think the main purpose of the Alien franchise/universe or a horror/slasher movie supposed to be? That's what I think the very beautiful thing is about Prometheus and Shaw's character is they give the series the philosophy, wonder, and hope for what's out there in the universe and from our creators, yet you have to remember, this is an alien horror movie, and yes, even realistically us meeting other aliens/life forms could actually be hostile and be our own undoing. Also our own creation (David/AIs) can be our undoing as well and without the proper empathy and morals, David sees the flaws in his own creators and other life forms and wants to use the Engineers weapons of genocide to wipe out life to start over again. How his mission ends is unknown yet

@@ThatScythe I actually had a vision of Shaw and David stopping at the various worlds we saw displayed in the Orrery scene. Every one would provide a piece of the puzzle for Shaw and David would learn and grow beyond his initial programming. There could have been many sequels but, after watching Covenant several times it occurred to me that this branch of the "Alien" tree jumped the shark with John Denver. "Alien's" trajectory is well known. "Prometheus" could have been the basis for a Lara Croft-style adventure series. We've seen Xenomorphs, Predators, and now Engineers. The story of why none of them have been encountered by the time of "Alien Resurrection" could have been a good one, but it appears that Disney would rather put its money into the Star Wars universe.

I agree sure it had a few flaws like a handful of dumb scientists but it also had so many intriguing ideas which deserved to be explored further in sequels. Looking back i honestly believe the hate stemmed from the fact some Aliens fans out there were worried Ridley was going to move completely away from the Xenomorph creature and they wouldnt see the Alien again, and thats why they so heavily attacked the movie. But i think if fans would have only been patient and given Ridley a chance, i firmly believe he was simply exploring the Engineers the ones who discovered the Xenomorph eggs and started experimenting with them, resulting in the urns. I think if Ridley had been allowed to carry on he would have connected things up perfectly into the original Alien film, and by that point he could have stepped aside and there would have been so much expansion and things opened up, for Neil Blomkamp to come in and do his planned Alien 5 movie. Trouble is Ridley kind of gave in to these picky, impatient and cynical group of Aliens fans, trying to please them with Covenant, instead of sticking firmly to his overall vision and making that movie exactly how he wanted.

The COOLEST thing about this scene, which in itself, from the cinematography, cgi and music is absolutely amazing sci-fi - is - that one of the engineers - who are such highly advanced beings with amazing technology, just uses a regular FLUTE and simple sounds to activate their ships deck :D This is sooo cool. It basically says, that, even if you are a super highly advanced being, which possibly has overcome the hurdles of lesser advanced beings, like the need for food or participation in the survival of the fittest and everything negative that comes with it like greed, vain, social competition, -- the beauty of music will always be something your soul needs & can appreciate ^_^

I dont think they have discovered the real 'engineers' of humans/earth,,these look and act more like the so called ''fallenangels'' hence their androgenity and strong desire to destroy humans. He was in hybernation because of the bioWMD they made (for other angels'' perhaps) got out of control,,Like the lead protagonist says ''an outbreak'' and also the captain states that its probably a military ship. They are seemingly engaged in a conflict with other similar advanced beings. And there is also the obvious fact that they are not that much better then us as we can travel like they do and offcourse as demonstrated outwit them and kick their arse..;-)The AI I thought was very believable, I think he smiled because he had good news for his father to make him proud, as the father obviously preffered the AI as son instead of his own flesh&blood daughter,. However i doubt that the AI is really trustworthy because of his line''doesnt every child wish his parents dead''. So although being AI he does illustrate human characteristics. This film is a Brilliant fantastic piece of art if you ask me,,with so many layers to it, and meaning. Hope they will make a part 2 where we get too see other ''angels'' and perhaps a glimpse of the real ''engineer'' and much more.

They were hostile to him because a human dared to compare himself to a god because he created David. They already had decided that Earth was not worthy because of human cruelty. There was a script you may find it narrated in KZread but basically it recalled an event of engineers giving human one last chance by taking a human boy teaching him and sending him back to Earth in hopes that he will pass the knowledge and will end the wars. The boy was crucified. And humans just got worse with time so they had the lanes to destroy Earth. So technically Elisabeth saved Earth. David launching those missiles was a more of a statement humans created him and believed to have right to mistreat him and treat him like a slave, gods or engineers created humans and while what he and Elisabeth encountered what seemed an inferior race not equals to the engineers he still comités genocide because he could and because in a sense it meant freedom. If he is capable to destroy the ones superior to humans he no longer needs to obey them. Not that it really mattered as he was left alone there. I feel like if he just thought for a second how bored he would get to the point to ending up creating new species (because his complex) he would have kept poor Eli alive.

Both films tell a large portion of what the old ALIEN: Engineers draft wanted to before Lindelof's involvement changed it's tangent into Prometheus which is interesting for the way it makes the Engineers more significant, now the work of ALIEN:Awakening will be to tie it all together in a satisfying way for 1979's ALIEN to be setup...

I feel that this movie uses “Life” a little too much, and that this would’ve been the right moment to use the theme from Alien, both for means of a throwback to the past, and giving a musical presentation of the vast and infinite universe that this scene- and the original Alien- revolves around.
