Believe me. Loved this music for 40 years and probably listened more than 50 different performances, I can confidently say that no other performance gets to the essence of this second movement as well as this one. This symphony is known as the 'Victory Symphony'. As a result, many play this second movement happily or comical. But it was composed in 1944, when it was not yet certain when the war would end. So this second movement should also reflect a more tense situation. This performance accurately expresses that tension. This was achieved by the precision of the conductor's interpretation and the rare concentration of the young musicians. My sincere compliments to them. And I sincerely hope that they are now safe to continue with their music.

Growing up listening to pop and rock music I found it was Prokofiev out of all the classical composers I could relate to the best. I suppose it was because the melodies, harmonies and rhythms were so obviously twentieth century that made it more relevant to me.

I regard this symphony the most savagely tuneful of Prokofiev's orchestral works. This performance floored me.

This is by far the best interpretation on KZread! and trust me... I've looked through a lot! For a Youth Orchestra and the size of this orchestra, it is EXTREMELY neat and in time!

Brandon Scherrer have you listened to other youth orchestras that are part of El Sistema? There is a video of the Simon Bolivar orchestra playing Shostakovich 10 / Mvmt 2 conducted by Dudamel which is just ... 🤯👌🏻✨

*Talk about taking things seriously! This has to be the most precise sharpness in pace and performance that clearly stands out from all others. What joy and honor it must be to have children demonstrate this level of orchestral precision, and make it look so easy.*

This brilliant symphonic movement by Prokofiev holds up really well on its own. And what invigorating music it is! Indeed, it is classical music that ROCKS, and ideally suited to exuberant young performers. Having said that, this is such a confident and accomplished rendition I would not have picked it as being by a youth orchestra. The tempo is a touch fast, but who cares? It certainly beats performances by some of the big orchestras that border on sluggishness.

Wonderful! These fabulous young people take evrything in their stride. Bruckner, Mahler, Shostakovich. Prokofiev...no problems! ..and having fun while they do it!! Makes me wonder about the aura that surrounds some of the so called 'Great Conductors'....and 'Great Orchestras'.
