It's a bit late but do you want to know something even more creepy? I've just replayed the game on ps2 and this ending is teased right before reunite with Mayu after the first Kusabi encounter.

Remember one cut out scene the player could see someone looking at a decapitated head in their hands behind the SAME screen. Mayu cut off Mio’s head

Yeah Mayu is absolutely possessed by Sae. There's even a cut-scene where you spot Mayu down a hallway, as she walks towards you, she enters a darkened area and walks out as Sae. Every time Mayu has control she constantly tells Mio to run and to save herself. Whereas Sae wants the ceremony to be completed and beckons Mio to the ritual. In fact Mio is sort of possessed by Yae too, the metaphors are there too throughout. Particularly the alternate ending where Mio crosses the gate and Yae's spirit appears from her. The beginning of the story also alludes to this as Yae holds Mio's hand as they enter the village and the fact in the canon ending Mio is set on completing the ritual which seems out of character, its seems more like Sae's or Yae's wishes in my opinion but that's just my theory on it.

So in Mio and Mayu's childhood, does it mean Sae made Mayu tripped so she would make Mio feel guilty like Yae, right? ( It probably makes sense to me because when Mayu fell and hurted her leg, she laughed like Sae) I understand that Sae wanted to complete the ritual without fail. When Mio refused to kill her, Sae went crazy because she waited for long time to be killed ( that is my opinion ). At the beginning i thought Sae putted her hand on Mio's shoulder, because she sees Mio as Yae.

@@L4WitchOuch it actually on the beginning was Sae, because she says "Will you leave me once more?" and in Mios and Mayus childhood Mayu tripped because she is actually the reincanaration (Hope I spelled it right..)of sae who tripped when they fled. They shouldn't feel guilty but Sae couldn't run/walk that fast Annymore because of her hurted knee I know that's why she actually gave up and wanted to do the ritual because if she can't run away Annymore. So life actually forced Mayu to have a hurted knee so that she could never escape with mio together out of the village and the ritual needs to be going on.

Yeah I agree with everything about history repeating itself but they aren’t their reincarnations but actually great great something granddaughters, Mio and Mayu are directly related to them through Yae who did escape and start a family. That’s why they look so similar

Mio was possessed the whole time in the canon ending

I am on the fence if Mio's head has been cut off, or if she's actually dead. The fact that she teared up at the very end is throwing me for a loop. Since this ending is labeled, "Frozen Butterfly", maybe Sae curses Mio, unable to move, frozen. That tear at the end shows Mio is still in there, motionless, like a doll.

The idea of this ending is that it's not Sae that makes Mayu crazy- she's always been cracked. Back when she fell, Sae didn't have any power over her, but she was still insanely clingy. She has manipulated Mio all along, and Mio wasn't the "saviour" as she thought, she was really just pandering to Mayu's thirst for her attention. She was never the more powerful one in the relationship, Mayu was.

About "laughing while crying" The ending starts when Mio wins the fight against Sae. Sae, who has been possessing Mayu, is defeated, and the relieved Mio hugs Mayu, but Mayu guides Mio's hands to her neck and tries to get her to perform the ritual. However, Mayu is torn apart by the emotions of being rejected by Mio. Her anger towards Mio for not accepting the way she feels, and the feeling of loving Mio for not wanting to hurt her, mix up and this is represented in the way she laughs as she cries. Mio sees this tearful laughter, and remembers how Sae did the same. Sae was torn apart by the same feelings towards Yae, holding a grudge against her even while waiting for her. And Mio's distant childhood memories surface. When Mayu fell from the cliff, she laughed at the pain from her broken leg, and the joy that Mio would only care about her from then on. When Mio remembers this, Mayu strangles her. Her hands are gentle.

Little girly, as SOON as you made that connection, you should have gotten up and RAN. That nice little limp she gave herself make odds good you would have gotten AWAY. But no, you sat on the ground and just let it happen. *shakes head*

Start replaying it from 8:26 and watch mayu put mios head down. If it were still connected to her body, it wouldn't be that easily moveable. People are arguing here as to whether or not her head is cut off at that point. I believe it is. I invite criticism to help clarify otherwise.

Sae was more manipulative and desperate, Mayu always just seemed kind of ... poorly equipped. I think this is more likely Sae now, having fully taken over Mayu. :( The real Mayu often told Mio to run away and save herself.

that sad moment when Mio realizes (FUCKING FINALLY) that Mayu has been manipulative her whole life (like falling on purpose and guilt tripping her) and she accepts her sister murdering her for it... I wish Mio could of stood up to her sister :\ That she could have finally stop her from holding things over her like she did.

Director Mr.Shibata talking about this ending: "Positioning of the ending, and the experience that led to it being created The producer, Kikuchi, requested that I make an additional ending that was depressing. The idea behind "misery" was "an ending that is so sad you don't like it when you finish watching it, and want to play it again." Perhaps it's a simple bad ending, implying that Mio loses to Sae. You're surprised, thinking you'd beaten Sae, but... I thought that was the kind of flow it should take as a horror. Also, in this game, we'd decided to add a style of gameplay where you can reach out by pressing a button, so I considered using this to make it so that if in the Butterfly ending Mio didn't reach out - in other words, didn't kill her - the ending would change. In this ending, it was clear as day that Sae was not fully exorcised from Mayu's body. She was temporarily pushed away for a moment or two, but boy did she come back with a vengeance here. I noticed that when eyeing for the little details that weren't there before. It flows right into the cutscene that was present in the original game that was relegated to in-game audio and a visual to view in the Wii version, of Mayu mentioning that she was the one who was supposed to die.

Fatal frame really got me on Tsukiko Amano i have all her old albums but havent kept up with her new stuff

Because in order to stop the curse of the repentance from going on, Mayu had to make Mio kill her by strangling her and her soul becoming a crimson butterfly. But in this one, Mayu kills Mio and ends up living in hell because she was supposed to be the one who died.

I was horrified when I first got this ending since i expected another ending XD

I would be so upset if I got this ending. I’m glad it’s non canon because Mio deserves so much better than this end.

I'll never trust Mayu again. Good to finally know what that creepy silhouette in that puzzle room was all about, at least.

I just unlocked a trophy of them in Super Smash Bros for WiiU yesterday and plus poor Mio 😢

I thought Diva from Blood Plus and Johan Lieber from Monster were fucked up scary. I also had the pleasure of knowing Hansel and Gretel in Black Lagoon. This still managed to fucking creep the shit out of me. I can't tell if Mayu decapitated Mio or turned her into doll. And I don't know which possibility is more horrible to think about, especially since that tear means Mio's soul is trapped in that body/head. Nice dreams.

I agree with this analogy completely, and I feel that Sae was not fully exorcised from Mayu's body in this ending. Oh no, if anything, Sae was pushed aside for a moment but came back with a vengeance and took over what was left of Mayu's weak soul and possessed her body. The final scene ties in to the cutscene present in the original game where you see Mayu talking to something. Nontheless, does not mean that this isn't the creepiest ending of the game, because it totally is.

and of course Sae wasn't fully excorsized from Mayu's body. She comes back instantly. It's sae who did the decapitating not mayu. since she couldn't get mio/yae to do the normal ritual, she decided to stay with her forever with a... different way hehe

This ending reminds me of an old belief in my country. When a woman was attacked or being followed by an evil spirit/ghost when she was pregnant. There's a posibility that the baby inside will be possessed by an evil spirit/ghost. Then when that baby grows up, (like 10 yrs old) that kid will possess the abilities and attitude from a ghost's when they were alive. (Sounds like inheriting a memory from the past.) that's why when Mayu Laugh after Mio refuses her final request, she saw Sae in her and she realized that Mayu was possesed by Sae all along. Even though Mio beat Sae through Fatal Frame shot, the influence from Sae was already imprinted in Mayu's mind. So... unlike Sae, Mayu becomes so desperate with her sister.

When Mayu strangled Mio and pat her head after that. That's no longer Sae, That's Mayu's true color. But she's already messed up.

8:29 = Ohhh so thats what we saw on that part in the game before we found here. It was this part shadow.

A idéia desse final é que não é Sae que deixa Mayu louca - ela sempre foi louca. Quando ela caiu, Sae não tinha nenhum poder sobre ela, mas ela ainda era insanamente pegajosa. Ela manipulou Mio o tempo todo, e Mio não era o "salvador" como ela pensava, estava realmente apenas atendendo à sede de Mayu por sua atenção. Ela nunca foi a mais poderosa no relacionamento, Mayu era.

just like we see in promise ending that Mio was possesed by Yae who kept running like hell when they tried to escape and she didn't come back for Sae. Sae found a way to trap both of them for her twisted future plans. of course Mio survived just like Yae :P . in the canon ending her spirit finished the job she should have done 100 years ago :D

You mean "wasn't purified", sorry, had to correct that typo. You are indeed very correct that Sae was still corrupted beyond belief though. It was not Mayu in control of her own body, it was Sae. I believe this ending is what originally happened, but that the whole thing was rewound so Mio and Mayu could set things right again. Weird I know, but it seems to make sense to me.

Gently caress. This is the first time I play the remake of FFII and I got the Frozen Butterfly Ending. I have no idea how to get the normal ending. Bless.

Maria you must avoid the optional cutscenes on the bridge that connects the Kiryu household with the Tachibana household and the cutscene i believe on the Kurosawa bridge, you then must defeat the kusabi between 1-5 minutes thatll secure you the crimson butterfly ending. Defeating the kusabi under a minute will secure you the promise ending, defeating the kusabi past 5 minutes will secure you the shadow ritual ending

Ah! Thank you so much dear!~ I avoided the extra cutscenes as you told me and got the Promise Ending :) Next time I'll try defeating Kusabi between 1-5 minutes and get the normal ending. Done some digging, mio's voice actress was born in Cyprus but has spent quite a lot of time in London she's been in casuality a british medical drama and mayu's voice a actress appears to also be british she's been in the bill a police drama and holby city also a british medical drama. Just some Trivia for you hehe ^^

I think someone did a noclipping during the game but not in the last part of the chapter 3 (Cell room). But it was Xbox version, I dont know how did he do that but I saw that in youtube.

... Wtf? I love the fatal frame series but there's probably one thing I hate about the most in these games... You chase after someone, trying to frigging SAVE THEM but it's like... "NO EFF YOU, I'M GONNA DIE BECAUSE I CAN HAHA BISH". I can't even comprehend that shizzles! Actually I can in some cases but still. God, Mayu probably pisses me off the most, I'm just saying. it shows that Mayu was possesed by Sae since they were little girls and the accident was caused by sae in order to make them be dinstant from each other otherwise the ritual wouldn't have worked (like the kiryu girls or itsuki and mitsuki). It was planned by Sae years before they entered the village. The past scene was showed to us through Mio's memory to realize as she did that that bitch Sae was in her ever since.

I highly doubt it's Mio because if it was then the curse on the village would have been lifted and the spirits would have ascended to Heaven (which they didn't since Mayu is still under Sae's controll.)
