Project Cars: It's time for a Montero update!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My 1991 Mitsubishi Montero has been serving me well for a bit now. That said, there have been some upgrades and fixes recently so I figured it's time for a fresh video on the truck. This is where we stand now on Tony Montero...

    I had a forest green ‘91 LWB with all the bells and whistles. Absolutely loved the car. Bought it in San Diego 1997 and sold it in Grosse Pointe, MI in 2003. It was one of the best straight factory off road rides I’ve ever driven. Everything was beefy and nice. Mine had the auto lock hubs with the really nice factory wheels. Wish I wouldn’t have sold it of course just like I wish I wouldn’t have sold my ‘91 LWB boxy metallic gold and chrome Toyota Landcruiser in 1995. The Montero was very similar long boxy classic body style as the Landcruiser was and I have to say it was equal or better off road with even better coil spring suspension and factory ground clearance. Mine had the tan leather seats with sunroof and even had rear light brush guards. The loosie goosie steering is a normal issue for these and mine had quite a bit of play the last few years that I owned it. It was still in great shape in 2003 when my dumb ass traded it in on a 2002 Cheep Grand Cherokee (total mistake and POS) compared to the rig I let go of. Anyway love your truck and miss mine thanks for the video. That truck had many epic mountain storm trips to the eastern sierras especially during the record El Niño snows of 1998 in Mammoth Lakes. Many great backpacking and Flyfishing trips in that truck in CA throughout the West and Rockies and of course in. Or there Michigan. 👍

    Great looking Montero! I have a gen 2.5 montero, replaced the idler arm after replacing the tie rods and realized it was the steering box backlash adjustment bolt. Not sure about the gen 1 but there might be one on there too.

    I agree, it does look really good. Just the right amount of modded look to it. I'm surprised the stereo is so weak with aftermarket components. You could try adding an external speaker amp. Or just get someone who has experience with it to deal with it lol. In any case the Dynamat is supposed to help a lot for sound quality so it would probably be well worth it, especially in an older vehicle.

    I absolutely love your Monty. I had a 91 trooper v6 5spd. So I feel u on the weight issue. Even tho the Monty had much more power. Well a lil more. But what u should really try is an 04-06 Montero limited. Maximum power and 5spd automatic. My wife put 200k on her 2005. Relatively trouble free as well it was an off-road beast

    Totally agree with the aesthetics of the Gen 1. I realize I'm in the minority here, but I upgraded my Gen 1 brakes to the larger rotor and calipers. I actually think it's more dangerous since the front wheels lock up much easier. Just something to be aware of.

    Just bought a 1991 4-Door Montero 3.0L 5 Speed, was looking for an engine for my 90 2-Door Japanese Pajero 5 speed. Then while asking my mechanic if we should use this engine in my 90 to keep it original specs since it’s worth more and put a diesel in the 91 he said “If it were me I’d rebuild the 90 Pajero engine!”(He’s a championship winning rally race car driver)…..Not sure why he told me to just find a replacement engine for my 90 (Which I sourced the entire world for and couldn’t find one except a diesel swap) but I’m glad he put me on the wrong path, my wife not so much lol. Thank You God!

    Alright, million dollar question.... Have you found any way to install cup holders? My one and only gripe! I have the same model in green, with the sunroof, and have also rebuilt from the block up (cracked head in my case, commonly happens on the left side rear). Did it all myself and probably should have made videos...but anyway.... cupholders?

  • @TheHooniverse

    @TheHooniverse

    So, haha, good question. I use the center console as one cupholder. Then when my daughter's booster seat is in the back, I use the cupholder in that as another cupholder. Otherwise, I've got not good solutions. Someone should 3D print something that fits into the space where the coin tray is behind the shifter.

    My '93 Gen 2 had slight play on center in the steering from Day One, 0 miles. Maybe an inch or two each way. Alignment, shocks, tires made no improvement. It may be something you need to live with. Reviews back in '92-'93 mentioned the noticeable play. If you can test drive a fresh Gen 1 or 2, it might be instructive.
