Progressive Politics Turns Downtown San Francisco Union Square Into A Retail & Employment Ghost Town

We've all heard about the drug users and homeless problems in San Francisco, and it's all true. When Gavin Newsom shut down California and the mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, issued lockdowns, workers stopped going to their offices for work. So retail dies, restaurants close and homeless move into the doorways of the shuttered storefronts so they can use drugs. 50-percent of Union Square retail space is vacant. 50-percent of Class-A office space downtown in vacant. Commercial real estate is selling for a fraction of its previous value. Nordstrom closed. Macys is closing. Hilton defaulted on two hotel properties. The demise is real. Tourists aren't packing the cable cars or renting hotel rooms. The business lunch is a thing of the past. This is what progressive politics and politicians do to a once-great city.

In the late 60s early 70s they ran Bart down the middle of Market Street. There were more businesses open in the middle of construction then there are now.

I was a little kid then and yes, very correct. Fun fact - If you can find the pilot episode of the Streets of San Francisco Michael Douglas is running down the tunnel in the super clean, not-yet-open 16th & Mission BART station. Talk about a time capsule episode and show!

It's a mess. Better than a couple of years ago when downtown walking from Macys to the Ferry Building was truly scary. There is a bit of a bounce-back because London Breed is up for re-election and now suddenly is pro-cop and pro-business. And they rounded up the homeless for the Biden / Winnie The Poo conference and sanitized Union Square.

Problem is a Republican in SF is a political death sentence. Another comment mentioned the term fascist referring to Elon and Trump....well...you don't need to be "far-right" as Wikipedia defies it as SF and to a lesser extent is a one-party progressive / liberal swamp. It's funny....Willie Brown's politics would be a Republican in today's climate. He was the only guy who could tear down the housing projects in Fisherman's Wharf and The Fillmore without getting skewered.
