Programming metal drums is easy.

Get the Metal Drum Mastery Course here! - spectreacademy...
In today's video, we're broaching the subject of how programming metal drums is easy.... IF you know how drums actually work (aside from the technical aspect, the actual playing of the drums). On the show to talk with us today is Scott from Chernobyl Studios, a man who is very much into his extreme metal, and recently conducted a smash hit interview with Nick Barker of Cradle of Filth, amongst others.

Studio One has note selection built in, which is awesome, so i set it to a hotkey, along with note split and velocity, and it makes life so much easier.

I'm an old grinder, and I started programming drums around '91. Were talkin the BOSS Dr Rhythms,😉 ect. Our very first demos were recorded with a drum machine. It was an extremely hard sell then being an extreme band using a drum machine( we even used it live at the '94 Milwaukee Metalfest 😁) now it is absolutely an art form and sure, if you want to just have some basic stock beats, yeah its easy. But man, I've learned so much about rhythm, what subtleties change feel immensely, and just overall better musicianship by programming drums for 30+years. I wish I was even 10 years younger, because its never been a better time in all areas to be a musician. Ive logged 30+ years in the extreme death/grindcore/powerviolence/crust scenes and as far as creating music, this technology is fuckin awesome...lol. 🙂

Adam, watching you EQ the drums on the pop/punk session the other night had me wondering.... with them being digital if you ever "tune" them to match the key of each song?

  • @adamsteelproducer

Not really, it’s rare I tune Toms per song even with real drums- I actually want them to stand out of the mix as their own character rather than disappear into another instruments note

The first thing i did when i tried midi programming was actually the rosanna shuffle lol... I need to learn those velocity settings he's using. I am not very good at mixing and using velocities yet, i wouldn't need his whole course because, i can play drums almost like him already. And understand a lot about it like he is saying,, but i really need to learn velocity and a bit of drum mixing using steven slate with basic Reaper plugins... do you have any videos like this on your page about mixing steven slate drums with basic reaper plugins... it's too hard to learn from most videos because everyone has their specific plugins they are using... you seem to have a lot of good stuff here.

why is there no smart daw? should be able 2 create a track, pick up instrument, hit a note and boom... routed 2 that track. gain stage, tone shape etc... repeat for all tracks as needed and hit record. y no auto bpm? auto grids? etc... where are all the a.i. elements? we have plug n play everywhere. why no plug and record? y is the focus of a daws capabilities mostly put on the backend of recording? shouldn't it be mostly on the front end?
