Progeny of Den. Woo Leng

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I show one of my most vigorous Dendrobiums (Den. Woo Leng) and the flowers of one progeny plant AND a bloom spike from a Woo Leng hybrid that will likely lead to flowers within 2 seed of seed flasking. This exceptionally rapid flowering time may be due to the generation of large plants in flasks, and the vigor of this parent.

First flowers are really exciting! But many times it is just from the second blooming on that you can see the true potential of the plant! So maybe Woo Leng Jr. will come up with larger flowers next time! And I just can't imagine seeing orchid flowers after just 2 years from seed!!! Amazing. Cattleyas are slower, but most of mine spend two years just waiting to get out of the jar! After that, I expect at least another 5 years, + or -, to see some flower... Fortunately I'm not a commercial grower, or I'd be starving by now... Lol!!

Thanks for your comment. My other Woo Leng Jr did have larger flowers on first bloom. I agree that environment and plant health can affect flower size but only a little. But, I am always optimistic that my flowers will get bigger each time my plant blooms!!!

Sorry - did not send you a Den. Woo Hoo. I hope that the Keiki arrives in as good a shape it was when it left FL.

Just wait - I am just starting!!! If you watch my channel, you will learn that I do not do a lot of the same things that other people do. I LOVE to try new things and discover new approaches - I come up with many things on my own, based on my background in the plant sciences.....

Thanks for your comment - I am sorry but I do not have a home flasking video - that would be a really LONG video since home flasking creates different challenges than flasking in a regular lab. I do have a video on making an economical flow box for use in a home lab: kzread.info/dash/bejne/k2l2ttOvp8zacrw.html Let me put this on my list - but, the results from home flasking will not be the same as the results that I get now in my lab. My media are optimized and custom made and you would have to purchase standard media for home flasking, which do not work as well. You would also sterilize in a pressure cooker and not a regular autoclave. I do not even have a pressure cooker. I have seen home labs and they work OK but I have always worked in a regular lab and my results are based on access to decent facilities. My home is actually pretty small and I have no room at all to even think about doing this at home. But, like I said, I may be able to put something together to at least talk about this.....

I had a seedling D. Woo Leng and it past away! I hope to get it one day again but as an adult plant or keiki. Thank you for letting us know it is fragrant. 👏👏👏🌷🌞🌷Question, do you sell your orchids or your crosses and if so where can I purchase them please? 😊Be blessed!

I’m curious, do you attribute this success to media optimization or to the techniques you’ve learned

  • @plantpropagator

Yes. It is everything. The medium optimization is part of it but I have also learned how to get plants bigger in the flasks which involves handling properly and having good gas exchange. Deflasking is also important and knowing when the plants should be deflasked and how they should be treated before being acclimated to regular growing conditions. But, let me also admit that I am not growing this early flowering plant - an orchid foster parent is - the same one who was able to get an Encyclia tampensis to flower, also within 2 years of seed plating. I contacted him again today - the plant is about ready to bloom and he agreed to participate in a video at his home nursery! Maybe we will find out something else....???
