Professor Scott Galloway: How to Be a Winning Brand in 2017

For a deeper look into the themes from this week's Winners and Losers episode, here is a talk Professor Galloway gave at L2's recent clinic:
The equation for success is no longer user growth multiplied by engagement. Rather, it's receptors multiplied by intelligence. In other words, smart companies leverage user data to improve the intelligence of their products.
Professor Galloway lists the winners according to this formula, including Uber, Amazon, and Facebook - as well as some surprising losers.

Hey Scott..was in the audience in Toronto when you spoke at the London Drugs "thingster" a few days ago. Towards the end of your time on stage I started hearing "hissing sounds" coming from all around me which I can only surmise was the cerebral cortexes of the "sales dudes" in the audience deflating rapidly. Great speech/subject matter that was lost unfortunately on most of the audience who's idea of analytics and data science is a constant contact email DB report. You nailed what I've believed in for most of my career in marketing and eloquently delivered some nasty realities again to a group of mainly sales guys sporting white shoes and matching belts. You should open an office in Toronto, (4th largest city in N.America)...I'd line up to be a part of it. All the best and thanks again.

When you think about it, receptors and the information you gather with it, as well as intelligence of how to use that information for innovation, always were the key factors for success. The change we are seeing comes from the gap which opened up in quality of receptors and intelligence between the good and the very great brands.

The smartest thing that Amazon did is to allow people to sell on Amazon. eBay kind of forced them to do so, but still it was a smart move. It's also great that you can sell used products on Amazon, so that people can save money and protect nature too.

This is so interesting. Funnily enough, today I listened to a podcast (Pat Flynn with SPI interviewing Gary Vanderchuk AKA Gary Vee) talking about how SnapChat is the next boom in social media - not understanding Snapchat myself I wondered about it - I'll be very interested to see what happens. As it stands they are quietly going for IPO and they have their glasses thing coming out... Huh.

Very interesting take, I've just found out L2 and I really dig it. If I may I'd have one question for Scott Galloway, as here and in other videos you often speak to the shareholders and the entrepeneurs. I'd really like to know what you'd say to the content creators instead, what would be the smart move to do for them. I'm a digital journalist myself, and founder. In your speech you also include BuzzFeed, HuffPo and generally ad-supported media. It's interesting, imho, how we can consider BuzzFeed such a winner compared to bothother digital and legacy media, and still how much weaker it seems if put in the same box of Facebook and Snapchat. This has probably been due to the company, that has described itself often as a tech company, but isn't it a bit OT anyway? But I know, you're considering the market valuation, so you're reflecting on this is going up, this one down, for these reasons. I'd just like to know what would you think the content creators should do in this tech environment we're living in. Scale won't be enough, intelligence won't be enough, quality content won't be enough. So what? Thanks!

Great piece and I love the insight. I'm closely aligned with your thinking. However, would have liked to have seen some more highlights around what Netflix is doing on the intelligence end. Netflix has vast amounts of data on consumer viewing habits, trends etc. and they are using that data to both support user search and inform decisions on content investments. They have a very intense data practice and some of the best data scientists in the world working for them. The content they produce is very strategic and they have been highly successful at producing original content. I wonder if there are some metrics on the content investment success rate over other more traditional content producers (e.g., Lionsgate, Sony Pictures, Pixar, Fox). Essentially content producers are just investors and this if why there are so many sequels, as they are considered "safe" investments.

Scott, I don't think 0-click is as you think. Instead of goods arriving, and people sending back unnwanted stuff, I think we will get a notification with suggested orders...then we will de-select stuff we don't want, and avoid having to send back stuff.

Scott, do you believe that the Perry Marshall model of building an audience and then pushing ads/products is a declining model? Just curious, because I've been following Perry and he swears by it, but it does sound stale and outdated.

Scott Galloway Snapchat, the world's first A.R. social media, uses Vuforia SDK (PTC) which makes the outside world 'clickable'. PokemonGo (vuforia) jumped a value of 7 billion dollars within its first weeks of operation. >>Is it possible L2 could be overlooking the potential receptor value of Snap Inc's use of the Augmented World? (Snap Inc. announced this last November around the same time this video was posted so I wasn't sure if L2 got the snap inc. update.) Facebook and IG are cemented into their non AR/immersive ways. Facebook is def. going virtual but not augmented. Which is a SHAME, because now Snap will be the first streamliner through this "augmentable/clickable" world. -- a receding Millennial -- who would love to intern with L2. Cheers!

+Scott Galloway Snapchat is running a different race than FB and Instagram. Snapchat isn't social media, it's a tool for creating social media and defines it's self as a camera company. This means they'll continue to excel in areas FB and Co can't reach like hardware (wearables, drones etc)

Why would live sports be a loser? It has gained tremendously in the last few years as television becomes ever more reliant on live sports to battle the likes of Netflix. Surely this will continue.
