Thats ironic. Religion is the pinnacle of arrogance. You assert that the universe was build for you and tha you have ultimate knowledge of everything about the universe and that you are right about god and everyone else is wrong and there is no way you could be mistaken. Atheists simply say "I dont know lets do what we can to find out" and i personally would even say the human race is of miniscule significance on the cosmis scale. But i can sympathize with atheists being arrogant because its hard to not be when you can prove with logic and facts that what a theist is saying is demonstrably untrue.

So, in retirement one can exercise the luxury of thinking big thoughts without interruption, something over the last 30 years I rarely could do because I was always on 24 hour alert, responding to the emergencies of this world. A friend of mine asked me - "If God is all powerful, all-knowing and everywhere, then why did he ask Adam, as is recorded in Genesis - "Where art thou Adam?" I said, God cannot abide sin. I took my friend under a tree and in the shadow of the tree, the tree’s presence was there, and we were safe from the heat of the sun - it was very hot and muggy. Then, I took him a couple feet from the tree, into the heat of the day, and we were no longer in the shadow of the almighty tree, though the tree was just a few feet away. Psalm 91:1 says - "He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty." When we sin, it is not that either, God does not know we do; or, that God does not see us - he cannot abide in what we are doing. God knew Adam sinned against him; yet, it was like a parent who knows their child's hand is in the cookie jar - or, like in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory when, in the old one, not the new one, when some brat child was doing as they were told not to - Mr. Wonka knew what would happen, but they had to find out for themselves. The wisdom of God is this - his ways are not our ways and never will be. Our wisdom, on the other hand, is like that of an object which is traveling the speed of light, chasing, 13.8 billion lights years away, another object 13.8 billion light years away, also traveling the speed of light, and expects to catch it. What we need is expectation management on such a scale.

Revered in some cultures but persecuted by most others, epilepsy patients have, throughout history, been linked with the divine, demonic, and supernatural. Clinical observations during the past 150 years support an association between religious experiences during (ictal), after (postictal), and in between (interictal) seizures. In addition, epileptic seizures may increase, alter, or decrease religious experience especially in a small group of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Literature surveys have revealed that between .4% and 3.1% of partial epilepsy patients had ictal religious experiences; higher frequencies are found in systematic questionnaires versus spontaneous patient reports. Religious premonitory symptoms or auras were reported by 3.9% of epilepsy patients. Among patients with ictal religious experiences, there is a predominance of patients with right TLE. Postictal and interictal religious experiences occur most often in TLE patients with bilateral seizure foci. Postictal religious experiences occurred in 1.3% of all epilepsy patients and 2.2% of TLE patients. Many of the epilepsy-related religious conversion experiences occurred postictally. Interictal religiosity is more controversial with less consensus among studies. Patients with postictal psychosis may also experience interictal hyper-religiosity, supporting a "pathological" increase in interictal religiosity in some patients. Although psychologic and social factors such as stigma may contribute to religious experiences with epilepsy, a neurologic mechanism most likely plays a large role. The limbic system is also often suggested as the critical site of religious experience due to the association with temporal lobe epilepsy and the emotional nature of the experiences. Neocortical areas also may be involved, suggested by the presence of visual and auditory hallucinations, complex ideation during many religious experiences, and the large expanse of temporal neocortex. In contrast to the role of the temporal lobe in evoking religious experiences, alterations in frontal functions may contribute to increased religious interests as a personality trait. The two main forms of religious experience, the ongoing belief pattern and set of convictions (the religion of the everyday man) versus the ecstatic religious experience, may be predominantly localized to the frontal and temporal regions, respectively, of the right hemisphere.

  • @18dot7

A number of people with epilepsy, particularly those with temporal lobe epilepsy, have reported experiencing religious feelings during their seizures. Some experience a feeling of perfect harmony, the presence of God or a state of ecstasy. Insula is probably of importance for the seizure semiology. Postictally, some may develop religious delusions that can last for several days. A subgroup have an interictal personality characterized by a preoccupation with philosophical or religious questions, as well as hypergraphia. Wise-Knut, who lived in the 1800 s, is a well known example of this in Norway. There is now some evidence that a number of religious people, including prophets, saints, and cult founders, may have had temporal lobe seizures.

I truly respect professor Lennox but I differ with him in that he calls evil persons that lived in this world by name and that will be judged and cannot get away with anything. On top of what he asserts that the Lord has accepted us already, compared to other religions, in Christianity even the worst sinner can be redeemed if truly repentant of his/her sins. Remember what the Lord said: "Don't forget that I am between the old bridge that breaks down and the abyss". We may claim we know 100% who sinners are and who are not. What a fallacy. If he restricts himself to the term "sinners" he keeps politics/economics out of the real issue. This neutral terminology would strengthen his position.
