Professional Rollerblader Tries Ice Skating

Ойын-сауық

Today is a very rare Christmas special video where I try out ice skates! My sister and I go to the City National Arena in Las Vegas Nevada, home of the Golden Knights practice facility. I am known for roller skating but what better way to celebrate the holiday season with a cool trip to the ice rink to try to see the difference compared to inline skates. I hope you guys enjoy and I hope to do more ice skating rinks in the future!

    The trick he did on the 4th test looked similar to a waltz jump in figure skating. And when he talked about how the rubber of yhe skate catches you, but the blade of the iceskate was to slippery, that's actually why figure skates have toe picks. It's to give you a grip on the ice so you can firmly land your jumps without sliding everywhere. And why hockey skates are great at speed and agility, but aren't great for jumps or footwork, as its more difficult and dangerous to do that stuff without the grip of the toe pick.

  • @michaeldeacon7072

    @michaeldeacon7072

    2 жыл бұрын

    I agree and was thinking the same thing myself. Doing jumps you need the toe picks. Also I noticed him going forward he tried to always skate at the top of the ball. I would think because roller skates are flat with all the wheels. Although his backward skating was actually very good you could tell he was on his toes more and he did excellent crossovers. He also looked more comfortable. He also seemed to know his center of gravity which helps a lot.

    I had the exact same experience just today. My first time ice skating, but I was a rollerblader. I know people say that if you can rollerblade you can skate, not exactly true because ice skates slip outwards which roller blades do not, but once you get the hang of the balance you realise that rollerblading does indeed help. I was thinking the exact same as you. Feet wobbling, just tighten them up and keep going because you eventually learn how to get the balance - it's more about the weight balance which is easier on blades because the rubber catches you. Nice vid!

    As someone who ice skates quite a lot and at one point tried rollerskating, the two were so different. I was using normal rollerskates and i could barely skate in them. It was so strange not having to make sure your feet were straight and your ankles weren’t bent. Pretty good for your first time, when I started I really sucked at it and even a year later I’m still not the best at skating. You already know backwards crossovers and how to skate backwards which is pretty cool because those two things were personally hard to learn first, course it got easier after a while but y’know, ice skating is a big mental challenge after I had no trust in myself because I fell back and hit my head kinda hard the first time I showed for lessons. Also sorry this is long haha

  • @lpsnofuture1586

    Been rollerblading since I was four. Started ice skating in high school and prefer ice skating! One huge change I noticed was the push off. Or using the ground to catch your wheel to advance Because you are skating on ground to have a harder push off is necessary as to where on ice it’s better to accelerate. The wobble comes naturally in all beginners especially Simone who came from rollerblading bc we put all out weight in the center of the wheels compared to ice skating where you are actually suppose to skate on the edge of the blades and not the actual blade center. You have the inside edge and the outside edge.

  • @morgankate2410

    Could you give more tips please? It's the first time I read that you should skate on the edges and not the center which is weird for me. I started rollerblading 3-4 months ago (only gliding no tricks yet ). I've been to the rink around 10 times but soon it will be my first time after learning to rollerblade and Im scared if it will be harder or easier for me

  • @andrewl9169

    @andrewl9169

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@morgankate2410 Ice skater for 15+ years if you look down the center of an ice skate you'll see that its actually concaved. when you skate on ice you use the edges to bite into the ice to give you better control and stability. you seldom if ever are running your skates in a straight line. The easiest way to feel this effect is by "pumping" or using one foot to make a half C (Note: this will cause you to move forward) If you continue this you'll accomplish a swizzle. If you look at the marks left by skating normally you'll actually see this effect in every stride. This happens because ice skaters are actually making very small turns when going straight. For me as an ice skater roller skating feels very strange and foreign I feel like I have significantly less control than I do on ice as wheels don't bite into the surface but instead will tend to gab it in ways I'm not used to. A good example of this is in slide stops. On ice I can adjust the angle of the blade to change how aggressively I'm stopping however on roller skates I feel like I'm at the complete mercy of the surface I'm on and the hardness of the wheels. Some of the skills transfer over in both cases however ice skating is more responsive in my opinion. My view is probably more subjective than factual in some ways as I have 1000s of hours on ice and maybe a 100 or so on roller skates. The best advice I can give for getting used to ice skating is practice slaloms this will help give you a good feel for how ice reacts and is a basic exercise for for edge work. Another useful one is very slow crossovers focusing on controlling the half turn that will inevitably happen you can do this on the inside and outside edges (inside and outside of your foot)

    Liking this video and the idea. Makes me want to go ice skating again. Yeah, I feel like they never smooth out the ice for public skate times. It’s almost like the public skate times are an afterthought or way of generating extra income but it’s not the main way. The main way is skate clubs I think, which roller skating rinks could have for their benefit as well honestly. But I don’t think that would go over well when ice skating and it’s disciplines attract... high income people.

    It is transferable It takes a little more skill in some ways but in other ways it doesn't, for me a recreational and former workout inline skater it takes 30 to 40 minutes to adjust on the ice to the skating level am on inline wheeled skating.

    I just wonder how people film these videos on almost empty ice rinks. Our rinks are just PACKED no matter at what time or day you go! There's not many in the area. But you never have any space to practice stuff without getting in the way of someone else...

    I'm so confused about how nobody wears helmets in ice rinks. I'd be scared out of my mind. You're trying a new sport, will probably fall and if you hit your head you will at least have a concussion. It's so weird. I get that you guys didn't, since you have some transferrable skill...

    From my experience of ice skating, (about 2ish years of skating + a year and a half plus pause from covid and returning) I have never actually seen anyone fall on their head. It can definately happen so I am not going to rule it out, but because of how we move on ice, whether a complete beginner or professional, you tend to land on your bum/lower back/wrists/stomach and slide on the ice over a harsher impact. Ice is suprisingly softer to land on than expected. Usually when you try to catch yourself when falling you redirect yourself away from your head without even meaning to. The first step of learning any skating is learning to fall and get past the fear of it!

    Helmets are for hockey because you actually get hit and fall hard but when you’re ice skating it’s rare you’ll fall on your head. Higher chance of breaking your wrists trying to break a fall.

    I can tell its very much the same... you have to be much more forcefull and brave in iceskating, since you can "scrape the ice". so you have to be sort of angry at first and brave. i think good way is to start learn the side stop slide. scrape all the snow up and feel you are in control of the ice.

    Ice skating and roller blading are NOTHING alike! It's reverse for me, I skate and can't roller blade for the life of me! Also, the rental skates are horrible, half the time they're not actually sharp and the blades are cheep and have mostly been stomped flat when they're supposed to have a slight curve! Funny video tho!!!
