Professional Recorder Player Plays Grade 1 to 8 | Team Recorder

Музыка

I play through recorder repertoire from grade 1 to 8! Which grade are you on? Let me know!
I'm using the Trinity syllabus rather than ABRSM because... reasons in the video!
Sheet music is included on-screen for the pieces freely available on IMSLP. For the pieces still in copyright/only available in published books, I haven't included the sheet music. Composers and publishers need to pay their bills too ;)

Hi lovely people! Wow, my comments at the end have certainly sparked a discussion! I'm seeing a few of the same points popping up again and again, so I'll just comment on that here: - I'm not suggesting boycotting, replacing, or throwing out music by white male composers. Check out pretty much any of of my other videos and you'll see them amply represented. - I'm also not suggesting we throw out historical music.. again check out the hundreds of videos I've made on the topic! - my comments are part of a much wider conversation currently happening in the classical music world. They have context and there is a need for them. If you'd like to know more, there are loads of articles out there for you to read. - "I've never seen this as a problem" - that's wonderful for you! It's worth noting your experience may not be universal. Try and understand this and acknowledge another's experience rather than discounting it. - Important one: Why assume music composers by female composers/composers of colour will be inferior to pieces written by white males? I'm seeing this one cropping up a lot. If you are making this point, please ask yourself..... why? - Lastly, females and people of colour have been making music since... music existed. And INCREDIBLE music at that! I firmly believe that widening our curriculum to teach this too will benefit our musical practice. It's about making our music experience better, not shutting people out. Okay those were a few thoughts, byeee. As I said, there are many others writing on this subject more eloquently than I have. Seriously go and research it! 😘

I agree with you. No need to boycott. Or throw things out. But just see that their is more ways to notate and learn music. And so much more music to love. Diversity is a good thing and it makes us all stronger. All of us.

One of my acquaintances is quite active in advocating for diversity in representation as well as encouraging programs and orchestras to include more pieces from living composers. Feel free to look him up. :) instagram.com/jonsilpayamanant/

I often find my response to rhetoric about diversity and inclusions is somewhat skeptical, but after seeing the video, there was nothing objectionable about what you said whatsoever. It was all positivity and about trying to expose students to a wider range of music and artists, which is great! I would say, however, that when playing classical music on an instrument where most of the standard repertiore is from the baroque and renaissance periods in Europe, it's kind of predictable that the composers are going to be somewhat homogeneous. I guess the situation is different if you're studying saxophone or sitar---or simply focusing more on *contemporary* repertoire.

Well, I never thought that women couldn't be composers or that they would be worse than the men. I suppose it has something to do with the city of my origin. I am from Brno, Czech Republic and on the Central Cemetry in my city, there is a section dedicated to well known personalities. It is customary for citizens to visit not only graves of their families but also people in these celebrity section (especially on the 2nd November). So from my youth I have been aware of two famous (or at least for Czech people famous) composers burried there - Leoš Janáček and Vítězslava Kaprálová. The second one was a woman, talented composer who died at the age 25. The city commemorates both of them on big anniversaries of their birth, death, etc..., so does the city's Philharmony, so I always aware of a fate of talented young girl who died of tuberculosis before she could show the world (or at least Czech Republic) her whole talent. So the impression I was growing with was: "There's more male composers than female composers which is a pity and I hope it will change one day." So maybe that's the way forward. Educate the next generation on the few existing female composers, (or non white composers) and the next ones will feel inspired and show themselves. Therefore I agree with you. :-)

Dear Sarah, I'm from Bangalore, Karnataka, India. You are my inspiration and distant online tutor. Although I love music, I haven't still mastered to play any instruments. However, finally now I have put my Yamaha plastic recorder to use by watching your videos. I only wish to become like you one day, and play the instrument for His glory and to mesmerise people with my music. All your videos are beackon of light to understand, learn and play. Thank you so much for all your free tutorials on you channel! May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty for your contribution to the society! Please continue release video lessons for a beginner like me to move up the grades.

Growing up I was musically talented, but being the fifth of six children, I just didn’t have access to music lessons outside of school for financial reasons. My oldest sister learned organ up to grade 8, so we had a lot of music books around the house and I taught myself the basics of reading music using those. Up until recently, I’d always thought I lost out by not having official lessons, but lately I’ve been feeling more and more thankful that I was self-taught. I know I was very lucky to have musical resources around me to teach myself from, as most self-taught people don’t have that privilege, but I’m really glad I have been able to learn at my own pace without the biases and pressure that come with an official music education. Thank you Sarah for this video, and especially for the ending. HECK YES TO MORE DIVERSITY IN MUSIC.

I guess I'm going to swim upstream a little here but I like that historical music is kept alive in the classrooms. If we don't keep teaching this music it may fade away and be forgotten over time, much like the old folk music here in the U.S. A lot people these days have never even heard that music.

I 100% agree with you! I never even clocked the fact that composers were all white men as I grew up as being a bar to my ability to compose. My teachers set me composition assignments - I did them. I knew that in previous eras women had been restricted - but that was history! And as for our repertoire favouring composers of the culture that represents our location, isn’t that right and proper? Why should we turn our backs on the heritage that distinguishes us from every other part of the world as though it’s not something to be proud of and delighted by? I would be very disappointed if I went to Africa or South America and found they were playing the same music I could hear at home and that there was nothing distinctive and new to discover. I don’t want to find the same, homogenised, bland mixture coming from every part of the world. Or is it only Europe that should do this? Please let’s not start applying critical race theory to music. Let’s only look at the music itself and give airtime to anything we produce today that is excellent. And let’s be conscious of the danger of losing what has been excellent in the past from our own culture at the same time, because those are the stepping stones that led to what we have today. In a time when it has become fashionable to destroy our heritage, we need to defend it. But I don’t think Sarah played anything that broke with that today. The grade 7 piece was jazz, which is part of Western culture, after all. What I’d hate to see is a syllabus where every culture of the world was represented in equal measure.

@@AnnBurgess00 I agree with your premise that you would not like to go to another part of the world and find they are playing the very same music you can hear at home. When I go to a different region I want to hear the music that is unique to that culture. We can play and learn any music we want to but the music itself represents a region and an era of time...it's part of history so let's not homogenize everything. Women can compose now and that's what's important. Like you, I never was thinking about the fact that composers were all men. I was just loving the music.

Amen!!!!!!! Such “sensitivities” are taught rather than innate, as I have learned both in college and as a tutor in my area. We don’t need to constantly apologize for the past, since we cannot erase or fix it; rather, we accept it, learn from our mistakes, and move on. I totally agree about folk songs and other old people music not being known in the US; nowadays, I am so done with the constant serenade of Baby Shark everywhere I go and wish children would know the folk songs, 50s songs, and Broadway songs I knew as a child. If one word is offensive and blatantly so, we can change it to some G rated word like “dingbat”; this is what my mom who homeschooled us told us to do when we read something like Mark Twain and a racial slur came up. Mom would use it as a discussion point, stating that this is a bad word, people used to talk that way, it is wrong, we don’t talk that way anymore, and to replace the word with a more innocent word rather than throw the baby out with the bath water and not allow us to read a classic staple of literature. As to historical music, we must remember that, while many people are attempting to evolve recorder into a modern instrument, we must remember that, unlike the conventional modern instruments like violin, piano, flute, and even classical guitar, the recorder died out after the Baroque due to changing tastes, aesthetics, and the need for larger concert halls ... only revived in the last century for the sake of playing historical music on original instruments. Because of this, the recorder lacks the full spectrum of classical music repertoire (Classic Era and Romantic included) that most instruments have, and while countless contemporary works exist, again, we cannot reverse the past, and hence it appears that most historical recorder works were written by white European men. Although women did truly compose in the Baroque, including the sisters of the flute-obsessed Frederick the Great (with one playing the flute in public, which was taboo at the time), many of these works that I have discovered cannot successfully be adapted to recorder, and furthermore, we will never know how much music was written by women at the time because most of it was not published. As time progresses, however, more and more of these works are indeed being found, but if a certain historical work by a woman cannot fit the recorder, then it is a moot point to adapt it for recorder. Which leads me to another aspect in the recorder world ... As a young pre-conservatory violinist and classical guitarist, I came to recorder primarily because I loved Baroque music and wanted to do more, plus have loved to study musicology since I was a homeschooled teen. I had been turned off to contemporary and avant-garde repertoire in my teens when a certain violin teacher attempted to prematurely expose me to it, and still do not care for it (and that is my preference, so please do not attack me) ... and came to recorder for the historical side. Three years ago, my recorder teacher who was obsessed with avant-garde music aggressively attempted to shove it down my throat, and when I politely declined, he persisted more aggressively to the point I got totally turned off forever. This repertoire is not exactly child or teen-friendly in many cases, so why to mandate it early on? In conservatory programs, all historical instrumentalists outside of recorder are not required to learn contemporary music, and many recorder players I have known have not only brought this to my attention, but also expressed desire for people and conservatories to develop programs for specifically studying recorder as a historical instrument. If someone wishes to pursue this path, why mandate the contemporary stuff? I strongly hence believe that there should be two distinct programs of recorder study: Recorder as a historical instrument, and recorder as a modern instrument. This would be a worthy approach and allow recorder to flourish as a historical instrument as well. Let us find balance in everything, which is essential for keeping culture and individuality alive today ... :)

@@hemiola07 Wow. In the beginning I thought you were a college instructor of music history and appreciation as your knowledge is so vast. I am impressed that you know exactly what you like and that you stick to it. I admit that what first brought me to the recorder was the idea that it would be an easy instrument on which to learn music but now it has also brought me the desire to learn Baroque, Medieval and Renaissance music. I would like to keep historical music both pure and available for generations to come. Your idea of two separate programs is very worthy of consideration.

    j. Marie Thank you so much for your kind words. I may be no professor, but I am a college graduate with a big passion for historical musicology, history, theology, literature, and more. Thanks to my mom’s ultimate self-sacrifice to homeschool me and provide me with the ultimate classical education that she herself wished she had, I not only developed a solid knowledge base, but also developed specialized interests and a lifelong love of learning. In fact, following a cyber bullying incident two years ago at the hands of an individual posing as a history expert but was anything but, I decided to resume reading books by historians and settled on Louis XIV for a topic. Imagine my surprise as a Catholic when I discovered that The Sun King himself had a major and genuine conversion of heart at the end of his life ... all due to one special woman who later became his wife in secret. I was so touched that I wanted to learn more, and before I knew it, I was plunged into full fledged research, learning French, and more. Someday, I hope to write a book, but for now, I keep plugging forward with both my research and music, working my day jobs, and always seeking to educate the public about good culture ... as well as advocating for its preservation and a return to true knowledge vs. propaganda. But always in a gentle and rational way ... Let us all work together towards that goal so that future generations will love and appreciate culture!

I didn't go out much before - but this isolation has made me pretty low too. I can't imagine what it must be like for a young person so used to being out and about with friends, to be stuck at home!! Good news is - unless the new govt. guidelines forbid travel within the UK - we are off for 3 nights camping (We have a folding Dandy camper) in lovely Dartmoor next week - can't wait!!!

Some nice pre-19th century pieces and nice playing. A relaxing afternoon hearing a nice recorder performance than a piano beginner playing "Chopsticks" or a violin student trying to 'slaughter a chicken' with a bow. Very enjoying music... When it comes to jumps, especially high notes, between a piano, violin & recorder, a violin is the hardest since you need to shift position and press the right spots to get the right notes. Playing high notes on a piano you just move the whole hand over and the fingering is exactly the same. A recorder you have only so many holes. The difficulty is controlling your breath to give a good sound.

In my teens I played in a recorder consort, usually playing bass or treble or soprano. I enjoyed it immensely. After a few years the conductor emigrated to Spain and the local authority didn't replace her at the Saturday morning music school so the recorder consort closed. I have barely played recorders since, and that was 40 years ago. I still have the recorders though, apart from the bass which wasn't mine. Oh and when did the names change? They were soprano, descant, treble, tenor and bass when I played recorders.

I found the sheet music for it in the music library at the University of Iowa some years back and was shocked at how "hard" it looked. I'm not sure if I'd have tried to learn it if I'd only had the sheet music! FTR, it wasn't until I heard a flute/oboe version that I was able to realize there were points in the concerto that I was playing both parts, lol.

I heard once that Waldorf education uses stories mixed with music lessons as their teaching method for the pentatonic recorder in the first grades, than they move on to Baroque in the other early grades later, they will still use stories for teaching - I bet the story progresses as they go into the Baroque . The idea of using stories as a teaching method, especially for music, is very inspiring to me for some reason.

How inspiring would it be my teacher saying "I've got a piece for you to play that was written by a female composer, she was one of the few female composers of her era". It’s easy to reassure yourself by pointing out how this was how women were treated *in the past* , but as a woman in the modern age you begin to wonder why there is *still* so little representation.

I'm just beginning to prepare for my Grade 8 exam through the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM), a Canadian institution. Interesting questions about diversity and representation. There isn't much diversity in the RCM recorder syllabus (which is long in need of a refresh). There are some options for modern-ish composers, including Colin Hand and Brian Bonsor, but few (if any) women and non-European composers. But there is, as one might expect, a fine selection of pieces by Handel, Bach, and Telemann. I prepared two jazz pieces by Bonsor for my Grade 6 RCM exam, which were challenging and fun to learn.

As a kid, entirely self-taught on recorder, I had a couple of tutor books - which I played cover to cover - and a book of 4-part Bach chorals which I couldn't make anything of (probably my dad over-estimating my abilities). But for the next few years, I just played every tune I heard - pop songs, theme tunes to TV serials, whatever I could hum I played. It strikes me that this is not a completely absurd system: start from the music your pupil knows and enjoys best, and try to achieve something in that style. Obviously not all music suits the recorder, but over an entire genre there is probably a thing or two that will "work" on the instrument. Later, by all means introduce him/her to as many different styles as possible.
